  2. So this news post from Thai visa.com is inaccurate?

That was just an announcement of the new rules by immigration on it's website. There was a change made to that announcement stating they were awaiting approval by the interior ministry.

As said they still have not been approved yet.

Well if it's posted on the web site and people are signing declarations and getting handed papers with this information on it then I would not want to be one on overstay now. Especially with the unpredictability of immigration at different border crossings and airports. You have Phuket officers collecting departure taxes and doing different than officers at the Bangkok airport. You have meetings with the ChangMai immigration staff giving different info than Bangkok staff. It just seems that nothing is consistent anywhere here. How can we believe what is posted here as news when a few days later that very statement is contradicted? As far I am a concerned it is better not to overstay and every persons experience is different. It depends on many things. When dealing with immigration be polite, dress well, apologize if you have done wrong. Research the best border crossing to use and just hope your officer is not having a bad day!

  3. So it means that I will have to fly out from bangkok to singapore directly instead of taking a domestic flight first and clear my overstay?

Can anyone confirm whether the new overstay rules are in place yet?

    Thanks

Ubonjoe just told you the new rules are not in effect yet. They have not even been approved.

And yes, you pay the fine when you leave Thailand.

Ummm I believe the new rules for overstay have been approved. I copied this from this very site!

  5. extensions of stay for teachers:

For teachers themselves nothing will change. The new rules even make it easier to change schools as instead of the WP itself you can also show the wp3 form indicating that you have applied for a new WP with a new school.

Extensions of stay for educational personnel:

It is here that there is now a change in the rules, as the rules now make a clear distinction between teachers and educational personnel.

The rules clarify which jobs are considered to be educational personnel as follows:

Person performing librarian, guidance, educational technology, registration and evaluation, general administration, supporter of education as specified by the Private Education Commission.

That seems to include teaching assistants. They now must have degree or experience that meet the work requirement and the ratio of alien employees shall not exceed 10 percent of total teachers or instructors in a particular education institution.

So you don't need to have a degree, but in that case you must have relevant work experience. For persons working as educational personnel that could mean they are grandfathered, as they will have relevant work experience next time they apply for an extension of stay.

(But If you are in the middle of your first year right now, I would not recommend changing jobs. They could say you don't have relevant work experience yet, better to finish your contract).

In all for most of the persons currently working in Education nothing has really changed, but newcomers without a degree will find it much harder to get a job in a regular school as they now must have relevant work experience.

For teaching at non-formal schools, such as language schools, nothing has changed and teachers there still don't need a teaching license or a degree.

Mario where are you getting your information from? Are you clarifying the documents that were posted here in English a few days ago from immigration or is this new information? Please clarify the source because I'm afraid recently this site is confusing the issue more than helping sometimes. As far as I am concerned if it was not in writing on those docs from the other day then I tend to think it is not true but speculation.

  6. For a private regular schools a degree is required, for non-formal schools such as language schools not and also not for schools for higher education (college, university)

This is even more confusing now. An immigration lawyer has told me one thing. A private school has told me another thing. The immigration call Center 1111 has told me something different, and now someone here has told me something different. I have received for different variations of answers and I am still no closer to being able to offer my friend advice about working in Thailand. These days everything in regards to visas and work permits is so unclear. We read many stories on this web site and then the very next day another story is printed with conflicting information. Forget about the different comments being made that are all different but the actual stories being printed are also being changed day by day. Just yesterday I called 1111 immigration call Center to confirm some information about my visa and they could not even answer the question. She said she would call me back! It all seems that the left hand and the right hand have no idea about what each other is doing. So ridiculous right now!

  7. Could someone please clarify. I have heard that a degree is not needed to get a work permit and non B visa if you are working for a language school or a private school. Examples of this would be language express and any international school. Yes I understand that a degree might be required to get hired for the job but is it required for the work permit or non B visa?

  8. "Guys I have heard this from a reliable source"

Another rumour monger quoting what he overheard within earshot of his barstool. Here we go again.

I don't want to get into an argument over the Internet with someone who trolls the boards just to make comments because they are bored, then quoting only partial posts. Obviously this was from a language school that teaches Thai language and gives education visas. May I ask you sir why you spend your time refuting posts on the net with strangers. Are you really that bored?

  9. Guys I have heard this from a reliable source that most schools are going in for a meeting on Monday to be told the new rules so anything you have heard from the schools regarding education visas are not relevant. The schools will tell you anything right now until they get your money. Then they will worry about your visa later. After they are paid then they will give you the bad news. At that stage you will have no choice but to accept it. Think about it guys. This is their bread and butter and will cost them a lot of money when these changes take effect. The days of education visas being used to stay in Thailand even if you are studying are over unless you are a full time student. Actually this makes since but really sucks!

  11. The junta should consider a program to enable unqualified teachers a path to gaining credentials. Perhaps education loans at foreign student rates while being allowed to continue to work at a reduced rate. I know the hang em high brigade will come out against any idea like this, but it's time to get realistic about the situation. There simply are not enough qualified teachers that will work in Thailand. You cannot demand First world credentials and pay third world salaries and get the quality you are looking for. In this way the government could also assign teachers to work in less desirable locations outside of Bangkok. Everyone wins in a scenario like this. The schools get teachers, the government gets money from loans, and the Universities receive a cash injection.

Thais teaching native speakers how to teach English. There's no need for this idea since Philippine teachers qualify for teaching credentials in Thailand and there are plenty of them willing to work for less than 20K. That's why my hope for salaries to go back up with this crackdown is just a pipe dream.

  12. I've taught and been an administrator at the secondary and tertiary level in several other countries. In each case interviews (by video conference call or with someone sent to interview candidates), documentation review, official approval, signatures, immigration submissions and visa approval took several months the first time around. You waited. When everything was finally sorted out, then you submitted your passport for the visa and you were sent air tickets and travel expenses, etc.

If the system becomes more difficult here than in the past, the schools and recruiters will need to adjust and the wages & training for local staff improved rather than relying on teachers whose only qualifications are a detectable pulse, a fair complexion and an absence of better opportunities. Given the appalling results of so many students as reported on TV from time to time, it's hard to imagine what all these supposed good teachers were contributing.

I am guessing, and it's only a guess based on past experiences, a lot of the supposed "good" teachers were affable, well-liked and no more productive than anyone else who pitched up looking for a paid holiday in an "exotic" location.

The problem is that most Thai English teachers CANNOT speak English. I say this with literally more than a decade of working with them. The students in the high school I am currently working in are a product of this incompetence. I have started this year at another govt high school, the kids are nice BUT at first they could not answer basic questions about themselves. I am trying to fix years, and years of VERY poor teaching of my language. The kids know that the Thai teachers are uselss, thats why they come to me and ask me how to say something in English, that they want to translate from Thai. I can actually teach them how to form sentences in a way that DOES NOT MAKE THEM SOUND LIKE A THREE YEAR OLD....

Thailand has the right to ask for well educated teachers but it needs to also sort out its own mess...especially when it comes to Thai English teachers. The only reason that there are Philipinos working here is that even they are better than the Thais. In the ideal world it would be a happy mix of good Thai English teachers and native speakers. This isnt going to happen anytime soon. Ask for me to get a Masters Degree in education?...dont expect me to work for 35,000 - 45,000 per month. I have a degree and I have a TEFL cert. I also have a lot of experience. For this I will put up with the not so hot salaries

I hope that getting rid of some of the long term backpacker type of teachers will equate to better pay and conditions. I am not going to hold my breath.

I hope that getting rid of some of the long term backpacker type of teachers" completely subjective and prejudiced comment. Surprised in comes from someone claiming to be a professional teacher.

You know I think that comment is a valid one. They work for 20,000THB per month. Would you want your kid learning from a back packer?

  13. Let me get this straight. If a prospective teacher gets the paperwork for the 90-day non-B from her agency/school, doesn't that give them 90 days before the work permit paperwork is needed? Shouldn't the last 30 days of that 90-days be enough time to process the work permit papers and the first 60 days would suffice as a probationary period for the school/agency?

    Have I missed something?

No you have not missed anything. That is the idea but many schools and agencies would not even do that. Paperwork is so terrible, especially for private schools. If the teacher was awful or the teacher quit all their work was for nothing. The previous laws aloud for them to send the teacher for a tourist visa until the probation was over but now it's changed.

  14. Guys why all the hostility. It's simple. Thailand does not want any more long term tourists. The Junta is cleaning everything up. Most of these people with long term tourist visas end up working or committing crimes. The few that are legitimate long term tourists or have mobile jobs can find the proper visa to stay here. If you are on holiday then get a tourist visa, if you want to study for real get an ED visa. If you want to retire here get the retirement visa. If you qualify and want to work here or do business get a business or non B visa. If you have a child get a dependent visa. If you are married get a marriage visa. If you want to invest money get an investment visa. There are so many options. I don't know any country that supports back to back tourists with no gap between leaving and re entering the country. This new law will force everyone to be more legitimate, even the lazy teaching agencies and schools who take too long to process paperwork.

  15. Guys why all the bickering and insults. It's simple. Thailand no longer wants the type of tourist that stays here indefinitely. The reasons are simple. The majority of these people usually work without permits or commit crimes. Thailand has really never been taken seriously in the international community. Harbouring fugitives from other countries, fake passport hub, lax and corrupt border controls and the list goes on. The Junta wants to clean everything up. Please stop with all this. Thailand is I hope turning into a normal country because for far too long everything has been backwards here. Yes for the people that lived and depended on the old way things were done in Thailand, the transition will be difficult. I firmly believe that all the expats with legitimate reasons for being here will be able to find the proper visa to stay. Ed visa to study, tourist visa for holiday, business visa to work, retirement visa to retire, investment visa to own part of the Thai economy, dependent visa If you have a child, a marriage visa if you are married. This is the way a normal country works.

  16. Guys it's pretty simple what should happen. First of all there should be fewer teachers available because teachers without degrees will not be able to keep legal status in Thailand. Doing visa runs or multiple double entry tourist visas are no longer options because even with a double entry tourist visa we now know you maybe refused when re entering Thailand. For the brave teachers without degrees, the black market fake degrees business will start to flourish. Hopefully salaries will go up for the lack of teachers but maybe after some review if the Junta wants to keep the same visa regulations, future teacher credentials maybe lowered to accommodate for the imminent teacher shortage. Agencies will have to get off their asses because it won't be possible to send teachers on visa runs while waiting for paperwork or a probation periods to end. If the agencies customers as in the schools don't co operate with the agencies then they will be without teachers. In turn we will soon see many teaching agencies go under because many are just too lazy to deal with visas and work permits and they are scared to bother the schools for the paperwork required in case it causes a problem for them to lose the contract. For example when the school simply does not have the proper paper work to hire a teacher but has been doing so under the old way for years. Legit ED visas are options if you plan to study but who knows what's next. Maybe school inspections, especially language schools who hire part time teachers and don't supply them with a second work permit because we all know that you can't work part time on your full time jobs work permit. You must obtain a second work permit for your part time. It then gets listed in your existing work permit blue book. These are my thoughts. I hope the salary bit comes true!
