There are a lot of regulations to be sure and I had a few surprises along the way but a great first step is to read 7by7 sticky on the steps towards settlement http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/524561-uk-settlement-visa-basics/

As far as I know there are no rules about having to pay tax (I haven't paid into the UK for the last 12 years) but there is the financial minimum requirement of 18600pa and a confirmed job offer if you are coming back to the UK.

One thing to look into now is the language requirement and TB certificate (if applicable to your wife).  The language thing caught us out.  There are limited locations and times where this can be done outside of the UK... when I found out about the rule we had just missed a test date and had to wait 2 weeks for the next one - it meant we couldn't get the visa in time for me to start my job in the UK.

    Thanks a million mate.

  2. We have been in Hong Kong for 6 months. Wife and kid can't settle. I hate the job but I have been offered a job back in oil and gas. We want to go and live in the UK now and properly settle there.

I have no lived or paid tax in the UK for years, i think the last time was 2006 and that was just for a few months.

I will get paid into my UK back account and i will move back myself to the UK at first and do my 4 weeks on 4 off rotation out the UK.

I know it's not easy to get the wife back (we have been together 11 years maried two and a half and our wee girl is 8 and has her UK passport)

I know you have to pay tax for X amount of months ^or 12) before i can start the process to get the wife back. Can it be done with me on a rotational job outside the UK?

EDIT= i will being pid from a company in Asia not the UK.

Only for a few years, didn't like it. Being a housewife, and just looking after three, was much better pay for far less effort. Not to mention the great voluntary redundancy package at the end of my 'housewife' era.

I've worked in some really nasty council estate (Oxford, Cornwall and London) schools in the UK. MaeRim and MaeJo government schools are infinitely better.

You're a teacher. Don't take this the wrong way but you have zero respect from me so your view on this subject is void.

the worst school in the uk will still be better than the best school in Thailand.  5555555, utter tripe. There are Thai  kids in Mattayom who go on exchange programmes to UK and US schools and end up tutoring their Western peers in Maths.

    Have a lovely day :)

  6. I've been to the UK twice with my 8 year old. Once with my wife, once, in may this year with just me and her.

Leave Thailand using her Thai passport.
Enter the Uk with UK passport

    Leave UK with UK passport
    Enter Thailand with Thai passport.

Take all the paper work you have about him. It just makes things easier.

When we did it the first time as a family we didn't have any paperwork with us. The officer asked my daughter a few questions in Thai.

When i took her alone my wife came to Swampy with us. They talked to her for half an hour and took photo copies of her ID card and Thai passport. It was a formality and we were never going to have a proplem.

That's my experience the last two years

From the way you're going about arguing, and the rather naive ideas you have about how these things work, one assumes you may just have first-hand experience of the worst school in the UK.

Nonetheless, whilst you're entitled to your opinion, in this case it's completely wrong.

Again, trying to convince yourself.  It's ok, we get it ??

Nope, I'm not a teacher either.

You seriously think you can buy yourself entry into Oxbridge via an international school?

No no you get in because you're a born genius. Again, you're not convincing anyone. The schooling from top to bottom is awful.  Again, the worst school in the uk will still be better than the best school in Thailand.

True, I agree but my point is after having my kid in school from the age of 3 and paying sums up to GBP 5 K per year (as a 5 year old child!) at some of the better schools in my area she was no better prepared for entry into a UK state school, maybe it is just me but that seems to be the whole point......

I think this is actually just him trying to tell us how much money he has.

    I don't have kids.

If I did, though, I'd have no qualms sending them to schools who's graduates have attained places at universities like Oxford or Cambridge - or do you think they just let anybody in who pays, too?

    Yes, they do.

    NO ONE FAILS.

    I got it...you're a "teacher" right?

Your Thai wife was educated in the Thai education system.  So....is she some kind of idiot?  Why would you marry someone who is the product of an education system that you so despise?  You don't sound particularly bright....

The he moonhowlers are out tonight. WOOP WOOP.

Again, you don't understand how international schools work. The decent ones are accredited by outside authorities, and would not retain that accreditation unless they were applying decent standards to their students.

I do understand mate. I also understand how Thailand works with this kind of thing.  Apparently you don't. It's denial by you. Do the right thing and get your kid an education in your Home country.

  13. Just now, SoiBiker said:

You're clearly not familiar with some of the better international schools.

    I am.

As i say, you're only convincing yourself.

The worst school in a western schooling environment is still 10 times a better education than the so called best school in Thailand.

Enjoy the rest of your evening.

There are decent schools in Thailand.

You need to put your hand in your pocket and pay the fees, though. I guess that might be beyond the means of many.

I'll be paying £1500 a month in Hong Kong.

I knew people would try say Thai schools are good. That's fine, you can tel yourself that. Luckily i and most others know different. NO KID FAILS.

All paying more means is the kid doesn;t fail at a more expensive school. They're still not how an answer is concluded, they are taught parrot fashion.

    Bang on...!

Could not agree more with this one and bwpage3 posts, we took the leap back in January and have not looked back since, zero regrets

Have just returned to the UK again after a 2 week holiday to LoS and that has completely cemented that we have made the right decision. Honestly there is not a single thing I miss and both the Missus and sprog were glad to get back home to the UK again

If we did not have a child to think about I think we would still have returned but the kid made the decision much easier, wish I had done it years ago really as the options for all of us are much better

We still have a house, cars, bikes and the wife's family and stuff so are still tied to Thailand for the moment but for me the charm and the rose tinted specs have gone, that said if Thailand still does it for you good luck and stay happy...

I was heading to the UK, but, this job in Hong Kong came up which is a huge career jump for me. The school system in HK, although expensive, is superb. SO i kind of have the best of both worlds. Plus Thailand is only 3 hours away with a flight every 5 minutes from Hk to Bkk.

One thing is for sure, everyone has their own reasons for staying and going. Only you know your own reasons and you should stick to what is best for you.

After 10 + years in Thailand, I decided to move my family to Florida USA.

Many people railed on me for this decision, but really, does anyone's opinion really matter? No they do not.

My decision mainly was centered around our son getting an education.

However, most of my friends had moved on and being around people that do not speak English was taking it's toll.

Not being a drinker or bar hopper,  we had crisscrossed the entire country seeing and doing everything.

About the time of the floods, protests, water and electric going off and staying off for days, 90 day reporting, immigration and the whole lot.

    Simply just tired of it.

The fact is everyone has their own reasons for moving to Thailand and moving out.

I did not trap myself in Thailand and with an advanced education I was able to come back to the USA and make money to be able to have a wonderful life here. I also have full benefits, 401K matching, annual bonus, etc.

I like having the comforts of a western house, live right near the beach where all the stores I need are within 2 miles of my house. No traffic, no wasting time where I do not have to.

Have a nice size garage, plenty of tools and an older Jeep and Mustang I can tinker with. Have 2 new cars as well.

Once the idea gets in your head, that Thailand is not working, it can be very stressful.

You can either get yourself out of the stress or drown yourself in the bottle.

My family loves it here, life is so much easier for everyone and we have no intentions to return.

Well put. Very similar to me. The kids education is number 1.

I never understand why people have a kid here and have nothing to stop them going to their home country to give them a proper education. No matter how hard they try and convince you, the Thai education system is truly awful no matter what type of school you go to. To me it's very selfish and denying the child so many things over their greed to stay in Thailand. (i know the offended train will be along soon)

The only reason i didn't take mine home or to a better country before now was the step daughter. I was never going to split a family up for my own selfish reasons. I was "all in" with the Mrs, i didn't pick and chose the best bits. I couldn't have took my Mrs and kid to the UK and have left the amazing step daughter here with her grandmother during her school years. She is now 22 and got a good job so we can move on.

    And we are.

Thailand is a pretty great place for the over 50 and financially set crowd to retire to. It is not very suitable to most people starting a family, and trying to earn a living. I have met so many 20 somethings who after being here 2 months, want to stay here forever with no savings, no long term plan and no thoughts on what that might mean (except to keep boinking the cute Thai girls they find so easy to meet). I have also met so many 30 and 40 somethings who stayed on after coming here in their 20s and they have no savings, survive via crappy teaching jobs and still have no plan for the future. By 40 it is pretty much too late to change your trajectory as you cannot survive in home country without skills and savings and earning power and you are usually here with a family.

Especially the ones without a degree....go HOME and get some education and put some cash away...at 20 or 22 you have plenty of time to realize your dream, you have not lived long enough to understand the mistakes you are making. Just my opinion and advice.

    Perfect.

There's a young kid of 25 talking to me on twitter asking how he can live here. I told him you just can't unless you marry a Thai and have a good income. he said, "I'll just get a job and work permit">...I said, "I've been here 11 years and have qualifications co,ing out my ears for the mechanical trade. I've had one job which was a two month shut down at mataput.

He's not replied since i tweeted him that last night.
