  1. It's simple, really. All over Asia, not just in Thailand, the rule is this: the bigger vehicle has the right of way, and smaller vehicles must defer. Period. Think how low one is in this hierarchy when you're on the road (walking) without a vehicle at all...

This is correct. But to my shame, I've started to ignore people on crossings too. In my defence, I figure that if I stop then I may "blind side" someone else and they will sweep through and hit them. All who live here know the score and act accordingly.

  2. Yeah, think we done all the stuff in town now but thanks anyway. Love the morning markets too. Found a really huge wholesale clothes and everything else market coming south into Khonkaen just before Makro on the left. Looks like all the local markets people buy their stock there.

You could try Nam Nao N/Park. It's about 130 kms south on the nmb 12 highway. Nice jungle walks to suit all levels. 3kms and up. Museum interesting. A huge collection of home made poachers guns etc. You can stay in a cabin overnight too. Welcome to Khon Kaen.

  3. I agree with most of the posts here. Less English teachers is the opposit of what I would advocate. The problem, in my eyes stems from the top. Khurusapha, the proffs. at the unis. Many of us here will know that Thai English teachers are well versed in grammar but the majority are poor in conversation skills.I can see the problem of testing conversational skills for their Ba, Ma. etc.so what do they do? they test them in grammar. "present perfect"",present continous" Kiss my fat a@@e

  4. I receive Uk state pension (frozen) I realise that this is slightly off topic but I recently was told that I can claim for my Thai wife. It comes under the heading of-Adult dependant. From what I gather, she must not be in work. It doesn't matter if she has been to the UK or not etc. etc. I have wrote to the Uk pensions and asked them for the relevant forms and any requirements docs. etc. Apparently it amounts to 60% of your state pension. Any light on this would be most appreciated. If I get a result I will post on here in the future. The pension people will NOT tell you about this, you must apply.

  5. The only people in Thailand that could attempt to "fix" Thailand are too embroiled in the corruption. The country will implode first, then a new, educated (God knows where, though) generation will have to sort things out. Thailand is definitely far from unique, but it is a country that we all have an interest in but have seen decline. We've seen how great Thailand can be - some of you still see that, and I understand that and the reasons why. It's a country that most of us can see has so much potential...but they need to change. They need to address the corruption and culture that accepts it.

Go ahead; abuse me. I expect it. However, I won't respond to any of you. I didn't write the article.

Why would anybody abuse your post? I agree with most of it. I doubt there will be an implosion however. I recently had a lengtthy conversation with eight or nine new police recruits. I mentioned many aspects of Thailand and corruption was the main topic. Of course they are well aware of what is happening within the force. Their answers to my questions actually heartened me. The phrase they were using was,"We are the new generation". They all, as one used this phrase. I have hope for the future here. I realise that there will be sceptics among us and that the young cops will be tempted by those above them. I honestly feel that things are going in the right direction.

  6. Well done mate! You did all the right things. As an ex teacher I can assure you that your step daughter was spot on.The other thing that a lot of Thai teachers do is teach the pretty or good looking students with more favour. This isn't just my observations,I have been told this many times from Thai adults. Thai teachers--dark skin equates to dumb.

  7. Hi everyone,

I'm 65 going on 66. My school recently had some, "big guns" from Kharusapha inspecting the schools credentials to implement an m.e.p. (mini English programme).I had the opportunity to speak with them. I asked them to explain what they thought of the fact that I am 65. They said that age is of no importance whatsoever. There are no restrictions on the WP either.

I also asked the questions that many teachers would like answers to. The "no fail" issue. The fundings for elementary level. The text books with poorly executed grammar. The answers I received were, to be honest quite encouraging but we shall see! I think that the powers that be are slowly waking up. I am retiring anyway but wish all you other teachers well.
