  1. At Suan Dok I was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of stage 3 non-hodgkins lymphoma. I asked the Doctor where she would go if she was in my position. She said she would seek treatment at Chula. That is where I went. The care was excellent, but it would have been difficult if I didn't speak Thai. My Doctor at Chula speaks english very well, but I spent extensive time as an inpatient and the nurse's english skills is limited.

It has been close to two years since remission. Knocking on wood daily.

    Hello maesai,

thanks for your answer. Please tell me, where Chula is.I'm far out in Chiang Dao and not too familiar with hospitals in Chiang Mai.

  2. Hello to all! I am totallly and completely confused by what happened to me today with the chiang mai airport immigration. ...

I was out of thailand more than 90 days running my retail store in America.

    ....

Can anyone make any sense out of this for me. I have a lot of business to conduct here in chiang mai and don't have time for yet another border run. I have learned my lesson and will definately apply for the 60 day tourist visa next time but I am never here longer than 60 days and usually fly to laos to buy silk so figured I didn't need to go that route.

    ...

Do you think you may convince the Immigration officer of not running a business in Thailand?

  3. Please help me here. I have been in and out of Thailand for many years but for the past 2 1/2 I have been away for most of the time and as we know there have been many changes. I now find myself in a spot of bother. I came back for a total of 3 months and now realise that my time is up. I have a fiance' of 8 years, a home and so on. My question is: Can I go to the UK for example and get a multi-entry visa? Say for one year. My time is soon up and I have a big dilema.

you may solve your dilemma if you're allowed to enter UK.Why not?

  4. i was up there till tuesday and it wasnt that bad in the city i think the tv finds the worst place and says its like it all over thailand really is painting a picture of doom and gloom when its not that bad any where thailands what you make it and i like it just fine

    Do you mean Pai?

The original question of this thread was whether Pai was smoky.

    sarpesius

    does smoke know borders?

  5. We were driving between Fang and Chiang Dao in the early evening yesterday and there were many, many fires. It was obviously intentional. For instance, on one of the hills at more of a distance, the fire was a big oval like someone poured gasoline and then lit a match. The whole area was smoky.

Does anyone know why these fires are lit?

It's the same as every year. Not unusal.

  6. Hey Guys anyone tell me the procedure at chiangmai immigration office. got my 60 day tourist visa in vientienne. want to extend next month at chiangmai immigration office. as i am living in chiangmai. could you tell me where the office is, and what documents i need and do i need photos. all information will be gratefully accepted. my visa runs out on the 11/03/2007 when would be the best date to go and extend thanks in advance marshall

As you want to extend your visa you get an extension for 30 days. That costs 1000 THB.

As you're living in Chiang Mai you may live there for 30 days more.

    Btw the office closes 16:30

  7. i did my KL visa run a couple of weeks ago.

generally, after a previous trip, i hated malaysia and wanted to never return. but circumstances dictated otherwise, so...

this time, while i watched what i spent, i did not obsess over it. consequently i spent way more than i would otherwise.

    end result?

if you are willing to spend the money, KL and malaysia are probably worth visiting, but they are not anywhere near comparable to thailand, vietnam, or cambodia in terms of cost vs service.

and i personally found the food to be the one part of the trip that was just not surmountable. noodles with brown sauce. no matter what i ordered, i always got noodles with brown sauce.

was i happy to get back to CM?

    OH H-LL YES!!

and next time, it will be laos.

so enjoy some delightful baguettes and don't be too sad Vientiane is "under construction".Nevertheless I think you'll enjoy Vientiane as well as Chiang Mai.And the embassy is a dream, not to compare to KL.

  8. I will be driving through the north soon and would need some place to stay in Phrao. I can only find Doi Farrang Bungalow (which hasn't answered my emails as yet) and Khum Lanna (which only sells packages).

I just need a place to crash for the night, something clean with hot water. Surely there must be more or not ?

    Thanks

My wife is from Phrao, she says there is an old Hotel near the Hospital that costs around 150 baht a night.

I know this <Hotel>, last year it was 250 THB,hot water? the matresses are very hard...

  9. A friend of mine went to Ranong for his 30 day stamp and being worried about the new regulations, asked an officer[through his TGF] for his best course of action. He [according to him] said he was told by the officer to go up to Bkk, change his passport as it is almost full and getting close to its expiry date and afterwards he could stay for 7 years!!!!???

As a TV regular, I have never heard of such a thing, which I am sure would have cropped up by now. Can anyone clarify what the officer perhaps meant as my mate has clearly got the wrong end of the stick?

    a. He is unmarried.

    b. He does not qualify for a retirement visa due to lack of funds.

    c. He has been here for a year or so on 30 day stamps.

I would have told him to post this himself but he does not even know what a computer looks like. Thanks in advance.

Does somebody know the difference between 7 days and 7 years?Either in Thai or in English?

    Sorry for your friend

  10. You should be able to get the proper documentation from your home country embassy, no need to go to immigration. The US embassy has the form for Thai drivers license all ready to go.

Thanks for your response, hmm im not sure if the German embassy is issuing stuff like that, but if so,i assume it needs to be in thailanguage, wel thanks for your help,i guess i will try it this way,but still wonder about that change at the immigration

Of course they'll do it.It's cheap, only 20 Euros,if they won't do in Bangkok, try either Phuket or Chiang Mai.Chiang Mai does it in English, so you don't need any other translation.

Btw, why don't you have the international driver's licence from Germany?

  11. Many thanks to Lopburi3 and others for the sound advice when my long stay extentions expired while I was overseas.

Their advice and my action was to get a tourist visa and then change that visa to a non-imm O visa in Thailand.

Much to my delight, unlike three years ago, I didn't have to go to Bangkok to do this, Chiang Mai Immigration did it and in less than an hour. I did have to return four hours later, my guess to give them time to put my application online to check various databases, probably including U.S. to see if I was a bad guy.

The visa does not carry any writing on it indicating what type of non-imm visa it is but they voided my tourist visa with the "used" stamp but did the same to the non-imm visa as well. Another stamp states "admitted 9 November, the date of getting my non-imm visa, actual entry date on tourist visa was Nov. 2.

"Unitil" date is 6 Feb but was advised to return in early Janruary to start the long stay extention process.

1900 Baht fee and expect same fee in Janruary. Used my pension for the first time and it was quite simple. No one asked me for proof of amount, I merely swore under oath at the Counsulate in Chiang Mai to the truth of the statement.

:o I am from Germany and did the same in Mae Sai on October 27th.Yesterday I had an appointment in Mae Sai and got my Non Immigrant O Visa. But the fee was 2000 THB(as advertised in the internet). For applying for the extension I shall come early in January 2007.

    It was pretty easy,although I had to wait 14 days of consideration.That didn't matter,anyway

  12. I will buy a motorbike and been to the immigration office in Chiangmai for a certificate of residence, for to put it on my name.

I am here on a 1 year multiple O visa, have a lease agreement for the house, in my name.

Does anybody know how i can get a certificat of residence in Thailand, maybe is there an other immigration office in Thailand where i can get it, where they work easyer.

Maybe can i go to a motorbike dealer (honda) who can arrange that for me.

Maybe one of you have a idee.

    Thanks in advance

    :o what's the matter?

2 weeks ago it was a matter of 10 minutes for me.

  13. I have a lot of experience in Commercial Law, and have read the Official Royal Thai Police order No. 608/2549 concerning authorisation for foreigners that are exempted from the Visa requirements to stay temporarily in the Kingdom of Thailand. The "Legal Speak" whilst difficult for many to understand, is however quite clear to me.

Under 3. Article 13 (3) of the Ministerial Regulation, it states as follows [and I translate in to simple Language]:

Within a 6 month period [that means a rolling 6 month period], you may enter Thailand several times, each time must not exceed 30 days, with a total of 90 days allowed during those 6 months [the 6 months is counted from the first day you set foot in Thailand].

This means that you can come in and out as many times as you like, but in one year this must not exceed 180 days.

Why 180 days? Think about it, if you stay here longer than 180 days in 1 year you are considered "NORMALLY RESIDENT", as you are if you stay in the UK longer than a total of 180 days. After that you should be declaring income and paying Tax if due, same rules as the UK!

That is what the ruling is for, if you stay more than 180 days per year you need a proper Visa and to declare income for Tax purposes as you have become "NORMALLY RESIDENT".

I do not see any changes to this Regulation, it is just that from time to time they decide to enforce the rules.

So I suppose, these are international conventions and it is the same regulation for driver's

    licenses ?

Or in other words Thailand has hurt or broken international conventions before ?

  14. They told me for getting a three entry Tourist Visa I must go to Penang.Consulates can do more

Thanks - Penang is a little bit far from Chiang Mai :-(

Is there a Consulate in Jinghong/Kumning

(China)? This is a 50min fly from here.

    I don't know.

But if you fly from CNX to KL then change to Penang ...it's done by Air Asia

Or CNX-BKK- Penang there are several flights :o

  15. You should be able to obtain a 3 entry tourist visa to tide you over. I assume you do not have the money or job to obtain an extension of stay from immigration?

I've been to KL a fortnight ago. They only issue tourist visa 1 or two entries, valid for three months.(For german people anyway).

They told me for getting a three entry Tourist Visa I must go to Penang.Consulates can do more.

  16. Hello everybody,

maybe you can give me a good and practical advice?

Last week I was in Kuala Lumpur and my passport was stolen.

I had my second extension of a Non Immigrant O Visa.At the Thai Embassy they told me that I could get a Non Immigrant O Visa if I have all the papers.I didn't have the papers in Malaysia, they are in Thailand. So I decided to apply for a tourist visa, double entry. My new german Passport is only valid for one year.

    So I think I should get a new passport(validity 10 years).That 'll take 4 to 6 weeks.

What do you think, maybe know?

If I go to the Immigration Office that has issued my Visa Extention and reentry permission they will give me a stamp?Or do I have to apply for a new Visa Extension?

Thanks a lot for your replies
