  1. all over the English press two dead obviously not headline news in Thailand, I have not used a boat in Thailand for eight years as once was enough overcrowded over safe speed = overturn worse than the roads out here....RIP the tourists never had a chance to learn.

"all over the English press two dead obviously not headline news in Thailand"

Not unusual. Top story in Singapore today is about 5 Singaporeans injured in a car accident in Australia (http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/5-singaporeans-injured-in/2821040.html) ... doesn't seem to have caused a blip in the Australian news. National media are always more interested when their country's own citizens are affected.

Good one... story in a local paper in a farming community where the accident happened. Not quite 'headline news' status... And on page 2, "Bob Jones' prize cow comes down with hoof and mouth".

  3. I have caught buses and minibuses from Korat and PakThong Chai, they all go past Don Muang, just tell the driver, they will stop for you.

Thanks , any idea where I could get a minibus to Don Muang , in Korat ? , can they be found at the bus station ?

Not sure where the minbuses leave from Korat, easier to get a taxi to the bus terminal, if you havent got much Thai, try "by satani lot air, yarg by krung tep". The train is really slow.

  4. I have used a Kobo for a number of years and find the ereader is kinder to my eyes, its more like paper, tabs hurt my eyes with the glare. I have had a Kobo sat on and it didnt like that, now the plastic in my other Kobo is disintegrating, how robust is the Kindle?

  5. Sorry, wrong location. Thats in northern Thailand (Doi Inthanon National Park).

The sign directs to Amphoe Nayung in Udon Thani (!) province (northern Isan, northeast Thailand).

I must admit never heard of "Nayung Coffee":

    FB site: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Nayungcoffee/1484225585157699

Sorry about that, I find google and other search engines not very helpful, they all seem you point you where they want you to go but not where you want to go. Interested to see if you find the coffee and if it tastes ok

    Search engines not very helpful?

I would call this a minority position wink.png

And I have absolutely no idea what you want to say in this context.

Its not a "sponsored link" or what is your point?

Sure I would also like to know how it tastes and what it costs.

So lets wait for a first hand report.

    (that was irony)

    You couldnt find it either?

  7. I am going to emphasize "END UP" because honestly.. if you had a choice would you really live there?

I frankly don't understand why foreigners go live in Isaan. It has no beach, it is poor , mostly uneducated, lowest level thai women and not the prettiest place to live plus there is no decent shopping.

“All of life is a dispute over taste and tasting.”― Friedrich Nietzsche

No one wants to end up in a huge polluted traffic ridden city like Bangkok either, but lots do, there is no accounting for taste, I know many Isaan people are educated, parents sacrifice to send their kids to uni, frankly I find your comments without taste, and bordering on racist, why do you hate each other so much? Are you more Thai, are you a better Thai than those in another province, I dont think so? Go for a bicycle ride through the paddy fields in the afternoon, watch the amazing birds and glorious sunsets, breathe some clean air and refresh your soul

Lots of foreigners have the option and resources to live in the country, by the sea, in the mountains, a shame you are stuck in such a biased insensitive rut, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, have a good look at yourself in a mirror.

  8. Some old ruins ( Khmer? ) just outside of town, on the east side on Chok chai.

    Is Chok chai considered Issan?

Anyway, I noticed the site on google earth and the daughter and I went hunting for it.

Surrounded by rice farms on all sides.

It looks much like an excavated site south of town dated to the 11th century.

Undeveloped, no signs leading to it, but locals are aware of it.

It made for an interesting outing!

If anyone knows of other sites off the tourist track, I'd be interested.

We respect these historical sites and take nothing but photos.

There are a couple of places like this to the south of Pak Thong Chai

  9. Some great information, makes me want to go for a drive. Years ago we did a trip starting at Pak Thong Chai went north and looped into the east, ended up in Ubon to return via Surin. Some highlights: Pimai ruins north of Korat, the "sausage" village north of there, the ruins between Surin and Buriram: Phnom Rung (lost my daughter there for a heartwrenching half hour while she was playing at being Indiana Jones), we also enjoyed the elephants at http://www.surinproject.org/Elephants.html

Altogether a memorable holiday. People in Issan are so nice....

  10. it was ok I thought. As others have said it really is repetitive with many of the same things repeated over and over again. If you are in the city for a visit, I do recommend the zoo. Not really fancy but it is outdoors and quiet. Good for some walk about as you hop on or off the trams.

I agree, the Korat Zoo is quite good, the shows were enjoyable. I took my daughter and young niece, both loved it. Got rained out last visit and intend to return for another look see
