  1. A report in May 2023 indicate that, for flights to Phnom Penh, AirAsia in Da Nang required for boarding an onward ticket and booked accommodation for the full stay.

Any more recent reports from any airport, especially in Thailand?

I just wanted to post my recent experience flying to Phnom Penh from Da Nang, Vietnam on a one-way ticket.  I previous chose to take the chance not to book a flight out of Cambodia as I had flown with Air Asia several times before to Phnom Penh as was never asked before.

Upon check-in in Da Nang airport, the first question the Air Asia agent asked me was, "Can you please show me your ticket out of Cambodia with 30 days?". I did not have one. She told me that would not be allowed to board without POOT.

So, I booked an inexpensive ticket ($50) right at Da Nang airport to Thailand departing in 4 weeks.

Checking in again, I got a new agent. She also asked for my POOT, as I expected. Then she asked me to see my hotel reservations for the ENTIRE time I was going to be in Cambodia. I am staying at a small guesthouse in Phnom Penh, I made the booking via Telegram, so I had nothing to show her. But I gave her my phone and told her she can read the Telegram dialogue so she could see that I had a place to stay.

She spent 5 minutes reading my phone, then called a supervisor. After they were satisfied that I had a reservation and enough funds to support myself (they asked my how much cash I had on me plus what credit/debit cards I had), they printed my boarding pass and accepted my bag.

I asked the agent, "Why all of strict requirements now? I never had to show any of this before." She replied that in order to get a visa on arrival and to let me on the airplane, Cambodian immigration requires them to do this.

What I wrote wasn't "reasonable speculation", but based on many reports from overstayers I've read. Very few had problems with regards to entering other countries with a Thai overstay. In fact the only problem I remember was with Lao Air refusing to take people with an overstay to Laos, ariund the time when Thailand introduced blacklisting.

Thank you for expanding on your assertion.

Can you help me find some of the reports you mention? Do you have links?

They usually aren't interested. Plus the overstay stamp is in Thai language only, so except for the officials of Laos who can obviously read Thai, "nobody" can read it anyway.

This is reasonable speculation. However, one can imagine that any extra entries are noticeable to an Immigration official anywhere, and probably signals some sort of trouble.

C'mon overstayers! Give us your experience, please!

  4. Has anyone encountered trouble entering countries within and outside of this region with whatever markings are put in the passport of an overstayer in Thailand? (The overstay is less than 90 days and will be handled at a Bangkok airport.)

I'm thinking of short stay (tourist) visits. One's country of residence should be no problem. How about others?

Can coming directly from an overstay in Thailand impede a tourist entry into another country?

    Thanks.

  5. Can anyone offer suggestions for staying in Phnom Penh? I will be there for about 2 weeks on this first visit, arriving at the airport.

A 55 year old man, I have visited Thailand numerous times on a restricted budget. Toilet and shower down the hall is fine with me. USD 15 per night is the top of my budget for lodgings. A/C nice but not absolutely necessary. To ensure reasonable quiet, it is a priority to be not too far from shops and markets but away from a busy street.

Where can I find such a place in PP? What area of the city? Any specific recommendations for a guesthouse or hotel are welcome.

    Thanks for your contribution.
  6. My recent experience is that 2 WU service points in Bangkok refused completing the transaction on the basis of having overstayed the permission to be in Thailand by a few days. Both staff had immediately shuffled through the passport looking for the current visa.

The service point which is in an office environment has an official well presented notice on the counter that says the requirement to use WU includes "Passport + Thailand Visa OR National ID Card." When asked about the ID card, staff said it would be necessary to check with another level of management. I don't have one, so I didn't pursue the issue.

Staff shared a workaround which I verified on WU website. The sender can change the name of the receiver easily at no cost by phone, online or app. "Get a friend to receive the transfer for you," was the advice.

    Good luck to other scofflaws!

Are prospects good for doing one more successful border bounce? With my record, I am concerned about potential complications.

I will be leaving the region in May, so I don't need the 60 days that a visa gives, and I prefer doing a 1 day bounce rather than doing an overnight stay in Vientiane to go through the visa process. I understand that I am eligible for one more Visa Waiver land border entry in 2023.

My recent history. All entries are on Tourist Waiver.

--Mid September 2022 arrival by air from outside the region for 30 days, + 30 day extension & 7 day extension
--Mid November Border bounce @ Nong Khai for 45 days, + 30 day extension & 7 day extension
--Early February Border bounce @ Nong Khai for 45 days, + 30 day extension

I had been coming to Thailand regularly for several years prior to a 3 year pause which included the Covid interlude. I have always used Tourist Waivers and occasional Tourist Visas. I have never had any trouble with Immigration at entry or extension.

Question 1) Will it be a problem to do another border bounce at Nong Khai within the next 3 weeks?
Question 2) Is the process at the Nong Khai border entry at the present time strict in enforcing accommodation reservations and onward air ticket requirements?
Question 3) Would it be better to apply for a visa in Vientiane consulate?
Question 4) Is the consulate visa process in Vientaine at the present time strict in enforcing accommodation reservations and onward air ticket requirements?

    Thanks for your input.

  8. The 30 day extension of my 60 day tourist visa (from Vientiane) is ending soon. I need an additional 6 days in Thailand before flying out of the region.

I understand that there are 3 options. 1) overstay and pay; 2) request another extension at Chaeng Wattana; and 3) do a visa run.

    1) There is always the danger of being found to be overstaying in those 6 days. How much of a hassle would that be, short term and long term?

    2) I have read that requests for second extensions are denied and the applicant is given one week to exit the country. A) Is the refusal stamped in the passport, or is there just a stamp good for a 7 day extension?

    B) Are there any negative longer term effects of doing this? Is a 7 day stamp viewed negatively by officials for later entry into Thailand? I plan to appear again at DMK in a few months looking for a visa waiver 30 day stay with a US passport (and possibly a 30 day extension later). Will there be any trouble related to having a 7 day stamp?

    3) I am not interested in a visa run for several reasons.

Thanks for any knowledgeable comments on 1) and 2).

  9. What resources are available to help a Burmese migrant worker whose 2 year old daughter needs heart surgery? In order to have the procedure done, a deposit of B 400,000 is needed to cover the estimated cost of cardiac catheterization for Atrial Septal Defect. The child was born in Bangkok, but that apparently does not make her eligible for aid from the Thai social health insurance scheme.

We need information. There must be some entities that can help. I have no idea where to start looking. Any leads provided will be much appreciated.

  10.

The Vientiane Consulate website was up again on Monday, March 11.

Registration for an account was straight forward and immediate (and required no telephone calls). When I signed in about 8 pm, the first available appointment was on March 26, which I took. I received an email immediately.

    >>>Your appointment has been set.

Your appointment is on Tue 26, March 2019 from 09:00 - 12:00 at the Consular Section of the Royal Thai Embassy, Vientiane, Lao PDR.

Please Print or Show this email message once you get to the Consular Section of the Royal Thai Embassy, Vientiane, Lao PDR.

You will be expected to arrive for your appointment at exactly 30 minutes before your schedule.

Even if you arrive early, you will not be entertained until 30 minutes before your appointment, <<<

My queue number in the mid 200's. Does this mean that I'll be standing outside the gate in the sun for about 3 hours? Could be a fun day.
  11. For applications for visas in the Vientiane consulate, online registration for an appointment to apply is required. One must first establish an account online.

As well as name and passport number, a telephone number is required. Is there a telephone call actually involved in the process?

I have no telephone number. I can use the number of another person, but I wonder if this may cause trouble. Are applicants called as part of the procedure?
    Thanks!
  12. Thanks for the comments.

    1) I know about the online registration. I hope its back online soon!

    2) Current passport is less than one year old and shows one Vientiane visa transferred into the newly issued passport, and the one from December, for a total of two. Other entries are visa exemptions.

    3) Any other comments on the main question? Is it necessary to stay out for a minimum amount of time in order to A) receive a single entry tourist visa, and B) be admitted at Nong Khai?
  13. I am planning a visa run to Vientiane. How soon can I return to Thailand with a single entry tourist visa? I would like to be outside for just 3 nights. I am concerned that there might be a problem at the Nong Khai border. Do I have to stay out of the country for some (kind of) specified period of time?

I am coming to the end of an extension to a single entry tourist visa. In November, I flew into Thailand from outside of the region and received a 30 day visa exemption with my US passport. I got a 30 day extension in December. At the end of December, I did a visa run to Vientiane. I stayed one night, received a single entry tourist visa, and returned via Nong Khai. In February, I got the 30 day extension which is soon to be finished.

Prior to November, I was in Thailand for 2 weeks in August, flying from and to a country outside of the region. I was in Thailand from January until the start of May, 2018, on single entry tourist visas from Vientiane and extensions. I have never had any trouble with Immigration or visas anywhere.

On this trip, I would like to spend just 3 nights in Vientiane before returning, so I would be outside of Thailand only 2 days. Are there reports of trouble with such a short turn-around these days?

I am aware of the new requirement to register online for an appointment to submit applications. Any other recent changes in Vientiane? Have they begun to enforce a policy on onward tickets, for example?

    Thanks for any help!
  14. At Nong Khai, should any trouble be expected with Immigration when exiting Thailand one morning and returning the next afternoon with a Tourist Visa from the Vientiane consulate? After a 6 month absence, I arrived in October by air with a visa waiver and have extended for 30 days. I haven't done this in a while and wonder if the situation has changed. Thanks in advance.
