depending on what country you are from, why not buy a rental property , maybe you could buy one outright depending on the area? live on the income? I just bought one and plan to use the income it makes to travel and retire, if your focused on having to invest in LOS, then I would buy in Chaing mai where the chinese are buying up everything and the prices are starting to jump, I have friends there who have a huge spread of a house in a massive gated community , they built a house to western standards of all the luxuries, their home has almost doubled in value and seems a good place to invest, but 10m B won't buy and build what they have there. but with the Chinese investment train flowing in Prices in CM are certainly going high. they are also buying outright and not make the same mistakes the russians did in Pattaya by making payments on financed condos. when the money stopped with russia, the majority of them lost their vacation homes and now buying in Pattaya is like buying a T shirt, haggle and get it for almost half price. If your into the Pattaya lifestyle , maybe look there, huge deals, but you have to want the lifestyle....

Last year I went to a private hospital in BKK. not sure the name. but its about 4? blocks from Victory Monument. across from TV5 and wanted to get a small procedure done on my mouth, went with my Thai GF. she did the talking for me but the dr also spoke decent english , Price I was quoted was Higher than it would cost for the same procedure to be done here in Canada. I was stunned that It would cost so much and they would not say the cost for a Thai. On Principle alone I did not have it done.

I "can use" just a towel on the beaches. but will spend my money to go to where I don't need the grief. I have 2 bulged disks in my spine and more arthritis than hairs on my head. I come to Thailand for warm weather affordable winter season. massages to help the achy bones and muscles and being harassed for wanting to have a light meal on the beach or wanting to be in a beach bed/chair isn't something I want to argue about when I spend ALOT of money to have some relaxation time on my holliday. Want us quality tourists who spend big money , aren't whore mongers ect. just want to get some sun. massages. spend our money. then don't make it so frustrating of a place to come spend our money. Na trang. Mue'ne and many other beach areas have just as nice of a beach and now so many "previously wealthy" russians have left Vietnam that its like it was 15 years ago. but their money from last 8 years build up resorts that are now $30+a night vs $100+a night last year at this time.

I LOVE Thailand. but its becoming a better place to have a layover or catch up on some jet lag between flights.....

I think you'll find that the sex-tourists spend far more money than you do.

How much can you spend on a beach? Light meals, a few massages etc.

Even if you chuck in a nice hotel, the sex-tourist will spend as much on one night out as you will in three days.

Well you certainly have me there. I have no idea what sex-tourists spend on their trips. I spent just over 10k last year on my trip. I tend to stay in nice places. and did a fair amount of fishing, charters, fishing resorts , some new equipment ect. always the best 3 months of my year.

Many people are retired at 40+. if someone joins the military at 18 and travels the world, has a great life. retire with full pension and medical for life at 38 yrs old. sure you can join the reg work force as a consultant and make lots more money , or you can be retired for a while until you decide if its what you want or do something else.

I'm also 42 and have been in a similar boat for a while now. buy at least one income property for some extra money. Keep your toes in the sand year round. Life does not have to be as hard as the media tells you it has to be. you can choose to get off the merry go round of spend all your credit to be a slave to corperations.

I think its great that others have done some smart planning. not popular or thought joining the forces young was foolish at a young age? Retired with full boat pension at 40 and traveling the world the rest of your life. Funny who is Envied and who is laughed at later in life vs a foolish kid lol

Im also moving to Los in the new year, 2015, for many reasons, I don't have to have the most expensive home in the city, I have been many times now and know what to expect, my best advice for what you can't get in Thailand that you will 100% need, QUALITY SHOES. buy two new pair from where ever you like at home. one to wear to Los and one to have on the shelf for when the first set wear out. make sure they are breathable. or your feet will always be wet from sweat and then fungus grows. Its HOT in Thailand.

I have thought about moving to Cancun/ Playa area, went down there 2 years ago on a fishing adventure, found nice condos right close to the marina I liked, Loved the area, the whole place reminded me of thialand so much . I thought I would rent for 6 months and see how it really feels over some time.

went for dinner . 3-4 blocks from where we were all having dinner and drinks, the local drug? crime , Cartel? not sure who really, Dumped a dump truck load of headless bodies in the middle of the street and drove off. no one was ever charged with it. It made all the headlines, but it was clearly a message about who was running the area.

People say Thailand has some scam issues, some pick pockets. but people don't know how calm Thailand really is .

Thailand is a Paradise. yes it has some issues. but if you find paradise between your ears and the rest is window dressing. you will like it there. and you can always take a cheap flight to other close countries like Vietnam or Cambodia to see if you like them better. but Ive been to all the close by countries and they are all missing something .

Enjoy your adventure and I like that you don't take life so seriously or you won't get out of it alive.

I think I've been very bad, according to one of the posters here, I've been participating in money laundering, I took some Canadian money to a "guy" hiding in a thick glass booth with only a hole big enough to hear each other through and pass " the goods" back and forth. I said quietly, Hi, how much Baht can I get for $1000 Cad, he told me. I thought about it and realised he was also going to charge a "fee" ontop of the "deal" as i already have some Baht on hand , enough to land me in Los. I thought I wasn't getting offered such a great deal.. Maybe I dodged a legal bullet by a hair by backing out of the "deal"

In a country where even the dirt poor seem to have a Smart phone, why didn't someone get even a phone video of them taking it all? I video every interaction with any police or military involvement .
