  1. Thank you Advanced Member listed in post #20 for this link:

"No, I think the story is accurate but leaves out the details on how it's done (for good reason). For that, see Krebs: http://krebsonsecuri...ag/atm-skimmer/"

Absolutely amazing details and photos! And scary. In any country apparently. And ANY ATM including those near banks. Time to reorganize my accounts and cards and ATM withdrawl patterns.

    Criminals SUCK!

  2. And the point is:

    A) Avoid all ATM's not in a bank (98% of ATM's).

    B) Avoid all ATM's with Middle Eastern-looking man, smartly dressed, with very good English lurking around

    C) Avoid Thailand

    D) Read the bad news and go to the temple to pray for "lucKY"

So are non-bank ATM's physically tampered with? How? Are there any signs? What are the signs? How can ATM's be tampered with and the bank NOT know about it? Banks here have no security measures on their ATM's? Or are the banks in on it as money flows up hill?

This story is like yelling fire in a crowded theater.

  3. Good morning!

I would like to thank everyone for their time and efforts; both in answering my very specific questions and in addressing the larger issue of what "updated and verified information" should be available where.

I spent 7.5 hours reading ALL the pinned and salient visa posts on this website and doing extensive searches throughout the web. (Old habits die hard, I still track my all my hours carefully.)

For those of you mathematically inclined: the sum of all samples in a Normal Gaussian Distribution equals zero. In other words, one poster says, "It is 3". Another poster says "No No No -3." Reiterate and sum the various samples several hundred times and all the information cancels out to a mean of 0.

Hence, my posted question was simply the final task in my planning process. I feel I have now gathered sufficient information to make the following "educated" decision: There is sufficient complexity, variance and risk in this process to justify the value added in hiring a professional.

Though I am an avid fan of Thai Visa and a number of other professional forums, until such time as this forum captures the free services of "Thai Visa professionals" and not just the fragmented experience and hearsay of "visa process participants," --pinned or not, searched or not-- the cumulative visa information contained in this forum will remain conflicting, incomplete and dated; ie., a mean informational content at or near zero.

There is no fault in this failure to successfully aggregate timely information. It is simply the result of this forum's usage of outmoded social-knowledge technology combined with the high informational variance of this topic: Thai Visas. There are other signficant advantages to this website that will keep me as a member and inspire me to recommend it to others.

It is my sincere hope that this post provides some small benefit in return to all of you who have been so kind as to share your time, experience and knowledge under the noble banner of generosity.

My gratitude and best wishes to all!

  4. Good morning!

After reading a wealth of information, some very helpful, some perhaps dated, some confusing, I have a few questions if someone with knowledge and experience could offer up-to-date information.

    1) What is the difference/advantages between a Retirement Visa and a Long Stay Type O visa? Or are those different names for the same thing? It "looks" like the only difference is that a retirement visa means I do NOT have to make border runs every 3 months but the Long Stay Type O DOES require 3 month border runs. Is that true? What other differences in application or result are there?

    2) Can I apply and get a retirement or long stay visa while living in Thailand on a tourist visa? Or do I have to go back to my home country (USA) to do everything? Or can I gather all the paper requirements and go to Vientienne or Singapore for 2 days to apply?

    3) If I can apply in SE Asia, where is the best place to get a retirement or Long Stay Type O visa? KL? Singapore? Laos?

    3) Does the 800,000 in either case have to be in a "Thai bank" or just a "bank in Thailand?" For example, can I have the money in an HSBC account at an HSBC here in Bangkok?

Thank you for any help and guidance!

  5. Hello!

I believe the group in Chiang Mai is now defunct. Something about everybody making so much money that they all retired to private islands they purchased in various parts around the world. Or maybe they just got sick from some bad som-tam? :o

I will try and connect with a friend of mine up there and find out for you.

I would be really shocked if there was nothing here in Bkk however.

  6. Good morning!

So I have my first visa run on my new non-immigrant multiple entry O visa. A few questions:

    1) I assume I just take my passport and go across some border to get another stamp (like a tourist visa) since it is a multi-entry O. True? Or do I need some reentry paperwork or some other mystery form I do not know about?

    2) Where is the fastest visa run in terms of time from Bangkok? Bus? Plane?

    3) Where is the cheapest visa run from Bangkok? Bus? Plane?

In both, costs and some detailed instructions would be great. I'm a little bit nervous and uncertain since this is my first time.

Thank you everyone for you continued help. This is a fantastic service.

  7. Good morning!

I read the post on Hua Chiew Chinese Medicine Hospital and will check it out today. About a year and a half ago I went to a wonderful acupuncture clinic in Bangkok's chinatown area. Very clean, large, well staffed, and the several chinese doctors and one spoke English. But darn if I did not lose the card for the place. It was a great clinic, not just some old chinese guy in the back of an herb shop. (Though they are often fantastic doctors!)

Does anybody know the name/number/location of an acupuncture clinic in chinatown?

Also, is there anything like a phone book for Bangkok? Yellow pages? Business listings of some sort? Or is is all just, "I have this friend that knows a guy..."

    Thank you!

  8. Good morning!

    I have a multi-entry non-immigrant O visa. US Citizen. Under 50. Not married.

    1) Is there anything special I need to do, paper work to get or watch for on entry?

    2) Should the visa card they give me be stamped three months in the future?

    3) What happens next? At what point? And where?

    4) I assume I have to do a visa run at 90 days and get a re-entry permit before I leave. True?

I seem to be missing some salient details.

    Thank you for your help!

  9. Good morning!

I used to think I knew the meanings of guesthouse, hotel, condo, apartment, room and studio but things seem to shift in Asia. Perhaps someone can set me on the right path?

I arrive in the middle of the night at the end of October. I need a place in Bangkok for a few weeks to two months while I look for work. In-room bath, air con, easy walk to a subway or skytrain stop, internet access (wireless?) would be great. Nothing fancy. Just clean and not far from the working/business center of Bangkok. No lease. No deposit.

What would it even be called? Condo/apartment I thought requires deposits (which I don't want to do for such a short time). Rooms in someone's house I'm not interested in. Hotel or serviced apartment may be a bit much. I don't need someone in my room everyday with a flower and a chocolate. Guesthouse then? Is there a website for guesthouses with long stays? 5-10k price range. Mr. Roomfinder looks great for condos but first I need something more temporary.

Finding work (teaching English of course) I will then find a place to live with an easy commute. I assume that is a condo? I never see the word apartment. Is a condo that is NOT a studio called a one-bedroom? Or is a studio called a one-bedroom there?

My god, I'm learning my native language English on a Thai expat website? How odd is that...

Thank you for any clarifications, web portals or recommendations!

  10. Good morning!

I've read with interest the many posts on working in Thailand. Other than teaching English, for the most part the posts are discouraging. Nevertheless, one reply had www.jobsdb.com listed as a good site for jobs. But strangely there are few posts on employment agencies in Thailand, especially those targeting farangs.

Have people had any luck with employement agencies in Thailand?

What are some of the agencies available there?

    Are there agencies targeting NGO's?

I've got considerable work experience in finance, operations, project and company management, software process/project management, technical communications and training, software programming.

Thank you for your insights and assistance!
