It is on the correct forum now.

You will need a re-entry permit to keep your extension of stay (it is not a visa) based upon retirement.

There is a re-entry permit desk at the  Poi Pet crossing but it is normally busy so expect a wait to get it.

Best to get the re-entry permit at your local immigration office. You can get a multiple re-entry permit for a fee of 3800 baht or a single for 1000 baht.

You will need to get a visa on arrival for Cambodia.

Thanks mate, just what I wanted to know, though not simple eh! Just fancy a couple of days away from Surin with the GF, but advice much appreciated.

  2. I have a 12 month retirement Thai visa and want to pop over to Cambodia's Poipet casino resort for a couple of days. Do I need to sort out a re-entry permit at the border etc before I go and subsequently come back, I ask as I left for Europe earlier in the year for a few days and didn't get the re-entry permit and my retirement visa was cancelled so I had to start again when I returned.

    Thanks in advance

I wonder if it was the other way around , or the driver was Thai?

I can only quote what happened to me back in June last year when a Thai in his Pickup drove right through a red light at high speed (c 160kph) and knocked me flying off my motorbike, I was about 0.1sec from suffering a similar fate to this poor Englishman, but luckily hit the side and not the front of his vehicle. After 8 days in hospital and suffering many broken ribs, punctured lung and a now crippled left hand, the Thai walked free from an charges after our police station "compensation" meeting, even though he was found 100% at fault as it was all caught on CCTV.

    Go figure eh!

What happened to Libya?  On the last World Atlas list they had Libya at a rate double that of Thailand's, this time they are not even on the list, and it is only a matter of months between the lists being released, its difficult to imagine that Libya has turned things around so dramatically, seems more likely they have not submitted their statistics and remain at the top.

Surely if that could be done, Thailand would not have bothered submitting their own figures given how much they rate themselves in all things ;)

Thailand already has pretty good laws in effect.  What is urgently needed is increased and improved law enforcement and a raising of the penalties for offenders.  I've already seen many accidents where someone speeds through a light that just changed to red and hits another vehicle or person going on the opposite green light.  The fine for this is 400 baht.  But if you smoke on Pattaya beach, it could be a 100,000 baht fine.  Doesn't make any sense.

I have been on the receiving end of one of "those" drivers who went flying through a red light in his pick up and knocked me into next week and am now living with  crippled hand for the rest of my life, but thankfully, I still have a life to live, sadly many are not as lucky as I was. The guy in question walked away scott free after our "Police meeting" to discuss compensation etc. of course the guy said he was out of work and had no money, go figure! BTW, the red light he went through was red for at least 3 seconds before he came flying through at around 160km/hr, all caught on camera as well.

that's basically it. there really is no explanation. it's how it is here. shhh 5555. buskings illegal here so you didn't miss out there. golfs boring. can play cards though ; )

Haha, thankfully I don't need to busk anymore, never say never though, but as my lawyer said, it's all about Loss of opportunity, and bringing things back on topic, the loss of opportunity to have a smoke and cheeky beer, whilst lying on a beach watching the tide ebb n flow, is a serious loss to my reduced life's pleasures :(

hope your hand heals mate. it's not perfect mate. far from it. won't change anytime soon.

Thanks mate, unfortunately, it's as good as it's going to get and that's about as useful as an open Claw, so no longer can I play guitar (I used to busk and play in a band) and golf with my son etc etc., and if I come across a bitter old git, then so be it I guess :)

Back on topic, I will never understand how they ( the Thais that is), come up with their league table of fines/punishments, against the crime committed, if only it made sense then I could come to terms with it, but when I see this sort of headline I'm thinking, jeez, I give up, but I know for sure the family and locals that all love me where I live, also don't understand the difference is, they just accept, which is kinda sad wouldn't you say.

actually most thais don't throw their shit on the floor and i'm in no way a protectionist. i'm sorry for what happened to your hand.. if it's pissing you off then their are airports. the thais are nice people. sure theirs issues but perhaps a different country might suit you better. good luck

Appreciate your comment, but you miss the point mate, it's about the "time fitting the crime", and surely as was mentioned in a previous post, re. Not stopping at a Red Light (500BHT) and other low fines relating to road users, causes not only pain and misery to the innocent sufferers, and from a fiscal perspective, a fortune to the poeple as a whole, in medical care when Thai's are the injured parties, way and above paying someone getting 300BHT a day to clean the beach in the morning.

Oh and just as a footnote, in the 3 plus months since the accident where I have pretty much had to go and have treatment on a daily basis to my local hospital once I had the tube taken out of my lung, I have to say that the daily occurrence of  seeing Thai locals in A&E balling their eyeballs out at the loss or injury cause to loved ones due to yet another road accident, that they would entirely agree this law on topic, it is in no way on a par, and instead of coming up with new rules of what you can and can't do, I feel the government should concentrate more on how to reduce what has become a serious issue in the country and causes a whole lot more sorrow in the country you love.

As for leaving the country, thanks for the advice, I didn't know the airport I arrived here from Spain back in 2014, still existed, always good to get expert a heads up buddy.

  10. This country is seriously Pixxing me off, their standards are unbelievable, wherever I go in the three plus years living here, I see Thai individuals throwing their trash on the ground wherever they may be, at home, on the road or in the city. How about educating their own dirty individuals who for sure don't give a flying F about their environment. As for the fine and or jail time, well yet another case of overkill and double standards, three months ago I was knocked off my motorbike into the air suffering multiple injuries as a consequence and a cripple hand for life, and the Thai guy in his Pick-up who decided to fly through a Red light at over 160kph causing said accident, gets what, Nothing! He walks and I live with the pain and inability to even open a ring pull can anymore. Well done  yet again Thai authorities, priorities bang on once more, Long live the King BTW.

  11. No one knows at this time if the guy was

    A) Part of a Boiler Room scam operation,

B). A Victim of the above scam or

    C) Working on someone's behalf investigating into the problem for someone who had been taken by the said scam

Until then folks, all the above posts are a complete and utter waste of everyone's time to read and reply to no?

If  any of the above come to be the TRUTH, I stand by the following answers :

    A) The guy got what he deserved as I know first hand with a family member how it destroyed their life when sadly they were hoodwinked into something like this

B).  Very sad that they fell victim twice, once financially and then with their life

    C) Pretty much the same as B except for the fact that in that line of work, you know the dangers of dealing with criminals, be it here in "Life is cheap" Thailand, or anywhere else you decide to go and investigate.

I hope this is not a reflection of Thai society as a whole. Though I fear that in general it is especially from the attitude of drivers on the road. I've never seen them make any real effort to get out of an ambulances way. In the UK cars go up verges, drive into peoples driveways just to give the ambulance free passage.

I'm afraid in my 30 months of living here, sadly it is, having travelled to many countries around the world and living Spain and Brasil before arriving here, I have never met such a race with an over inflated degree of Self Importance and complete disregard for others. They think they know everything, but are jealous of others who have more than them (but never want to change their own work ethics to maybe change their own situation), they are happy to put themselves and all around them in danger on a daily basis when it comes to letting them loose on the roads and as for common courtesy, if there was a world league, just like the "World Ignorant League" that was reported on here recently, they would be challenging for Number One and be Proud of it :) What's the answer, who knows, as this seems to go so deep that don't expect the Schools and their teachers to be any different, let alone the guys in power who set the agenda!

  13. 100% Motorcyclist is at fault, it's irrelevant how fast or slow the taxi was travelling, when you are following any vehicle you have to give yourself enough braking distance dependant upon your OWN speed. The guy on the bike is yet another example of little or no knowledge on how to ride a bike on public roads, always expect the unexpected and read the road ahead, not just under your nose.

  14. Was sitting at the beach the other day and a couple of Thai guys had these things blowing smelly (to me it smelt awful) smoke (I know its vapor but it looks like smoke) all around the place. It was very inconsiderate of them and disturbing not only to me and my mate but others around us. Yes they should be banned from public places not because of what they are but because of what they do. Same goes for those stinky BBQ pork 3 wheelers where the vendors wear masks to protect them from the smoke but are quite happy for the general public to suffer with it.

And I guess you don't even Fart in Public mate eh? Not sure if you've noticed but you and I live in a country of inconsiderateness, a little vapour smell from an E Cigarette on the beach is the last of your problems, especially if you had to drive home on the Thai roads! Just because you don't particularly like something you personally don't have the right to ban it, if you want to live in your own perfect world, may I suggest buying your own island and staying put. ;)

  15. Hi Guys

I need my Thai "Proof of address" document to be officially translated into English and as I have been then asked, stamped by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs which means the translator should put their official Legal Seal on it. As I see that, a Notary stamp would suffice, but am open to anyone that knows better. I live in Surin which may cause a problem, but if I have to travel to get this done I will.

    As ever, thanks in advance
