  1. the particular nature of Thai politics lives off of rumour and innuendo. why?, as to not have to show their true FACE. break it down into it's lowest common denominator, and the intent becomes less murky- MONEY, POWER, TRADITION. not in any particular order by the way. FACE is what you show, not what you feel or believe, but actually what will benefit the wearer the MOST. beware those expounding cryptic and esoteric messages to those that are the least able to "decipher" those messages.

  2. The Secunia study is irrelevant because it completely ignores the external reality in which the inspected operating systems live. It doesn't have any relevance to the day to day lives of computer users world-wide.

The daily experience is that 100% of all real world threats are out for Windows, and Windows only. In its various flavors.

Hackers don't seem to care about Macs or Linux. We know that that isn't necessarily because it would be impossible to write exploits. There are just not enough Macs and Linux machines out there to warrant writing a virus, when you could just as well write one for Windows and target 95% of the world.

Hackers will turn on Linux / Mac as soon as one of the following happen:

    - They run out of Windows exploits, e.g. Windows is suddenly secure.

    - Mac / Linux market share exceeds Windows market share

Both are events extremely unlikely to happen, and certainly not happening over the next few years. Until then, all viruses will be written for Windows, and how many security holes are in any given OS will be of academic interest only.

This listen like total ignorance of existing facts while others, like true PC Freaks will clearly tell that's a true Mac Behaviour! Isn't it?

I for my person don't mind because the numbers speaking their own words and it's a fact that statictics, based on true research with existings facts telling nothing else but the truth!

And again the retoric question: Why a Antivirus Software for Mac exist since System 6 and be upadted in short intervalls if there not any threath's exist? Just for Fun? Just need to look at the nimbers and there the truth!

    Cheers.

in attempt to answer your rhetorical question , no one worth his salt using Mac OSX installs anti-virus. what a third party develops is their business. if you have a problem with a "in the wild" virus infecting your OSX, please be the first one to announce it.

  3. the answer should be quite simple. you, explain that you do not want a child and agree to pay and be involved in the termination of the pregnancy. if she does not agree to the termination, then you are off the hook. remember, that if she wanted to terminate the pregnancy and you did not there would be nothing you could do about it. anything more than this would be up to your own conscious.

  4. believe you start accepting the "magical" attributes, i would seriously advise you to get informed of the "responsibilities" concerning the "upkeep" of said powers.

WELL, "dog412", thanks for all those inverted commas, how about helping me out by maybe telling me more about what you mean? If its so serious, how about directing me to some more information? :o Im trying to educate, learn and be culturally sensitive here.

i'm no expert on the matter, but for the traditional way you have the choice between a Monk and a acharn suk. try googling Thai magic, amulets, s.e. asian scripts, etc. there are a myriad of taboos that may be associated with the particular symbols, from menstrual blood to walking under bridges. ever wonder why a Thai male cannot walk underneath a pair of female panties? take a look at " Sacred calligraphy of the east" by John Stevens -Shambala publications for some info on Buddhist script. best of luck

  5. I wouldn't expect any less from HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. It's a pity that Thailand only allows men as monarchs, IMHO.

The succession is not decided by gender, nor by sequence of birth, but by the choice of the reigning monarch - A frank discussion with Thais on the worries that raises is enlightening.

Ah, ok; didn't know that. In that case, what I should have said is "It's a pity that Thailand only ever appoints men as monarchs". As for your second point, I quite agree. Nearly everyone I've spoken with here says the same thing, sooner or later.

from what i understand, under the circumstances of a non royal appointed heir, the privy council would not be restricted by the sex of their appointment. believe this was part of a new constitution.

  6. OK, whatever..., hurray to the "home of the brave and free". Is it?

The US economy is also now heading/leading the world with a home cooked recession, soley due to their irresponsible housing boom/bust. Yet, another bust. The 4th in the past few years, and all coming out of the US. As the US economy slows down to recessionary levels, the price of Oil will likely drop as well. This will be very good for corporate Thailand. Many growing Thai companies here trade at half or less the p/e ratio then in the US, pay 3 times the dividends as compared to the US, and have 3-4 times the expected earnings growth rate then the US. Thailand is benefiting from the continued boom in the north by China and in the West by India.

AS for low regulations in the US, nonsense..that place is about as regulated and taxed as they come. For example in the US only foreign investors don't pay taxes on stock gains, go figure that.

And don't forget some of the largest financial scandals have also originated there in the past few years. The biggest bankcruptie in history and the biggest corporate bond default in history all orginiate from the US! The continued falling US currency is another embarasement, who wants to invest in a dropping currency on top of a dropping stock market?

I can continue but will stop here, as I got work to do. :o Investment work that is, and its not in the US.

But at some point later in 2008, as home prices there collapse even more..yes at some point a US residence might be a good grab from one of the millions of bailing out overstretched US consumers, holding the bag.

forgive me, but are you trying to explain why the average Thai is so well off financially, or why such a minority of Thais are so wealthy?

  7. Tywais - thankyou so much for the speedy reply na! I see you're from Chiangmai uni -- I'll be heading your way come Songkran -- sanukkkk deeeee! Can't wait!

I had a look through a lot of threads on this forum today and this did help me about the sesame oil..

It's when the tattoo artist needles in the yantra using sesame oil instead of ink. The oil doesn't colour the skin at all but the needling does raise red welts for a day or two. After that the tattoo is 'invisible' but still performing its magic, or so it's believed.

It's mainly women who ask for the oil tattoos but some men ask for them as well. The monks at Wat Bang Phra also do them. They're done on the arms and back, just like ink tattoos, but at Wat Bang Phra I've also seen the monks applying oil tattoos to women's tongues and foreheads, two places you would never normally see an ink sak yan.

Anyone who could direct me to specific symbols would be wonderful..
    :o

believe you start accepting the "magical" attributes, i would seriously advise you to get informed of the "responsibilities" concerning the "upkeep" of said powers.

  8. Of course.

What's significant about all of this is that the main topics for the seminar are stuff that's normally not (allowed to be) discussed in Thailand in the open. (Including on this site, I gather)

Yes indeed - Is this a watershed I wonder.

Kudos anyway for it to her and the people who let her do it.

I hope the papers from this conference are published publicly for us to access.

"who let her do it". always beware of those offering their consent.

  9. Yes I can understand that... Still, you almost cannot find a greater endorsement than having Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn attend and open the event...! That makes it a HUGE victory for anyone who loves freedom and an open exchange of ideas.

As for constraints on speakers.. It can't possibly be more constrained that this forum right here cannit, and people here seem to be doing ok. :o

this forum has nothing to do with Academics discussing Thailand. this is a forum for laymen. i actually can perceive how some can be critically aware of who chairs or opens an event of this magnitude.

  10. I'm not comfortable anywhere that has religious police. I'll just stay in Thailand.

    AMEN to that brother! :D

That's why I left the US and the religious radicals (Republicans) there :D

so, instead you move to a third world junta with radicals bombing in the south on a daily basis.......when your midlife crisis breaks i am sure you will be more lucid

A bomb never has gone off in any proximity to me. I was a crime victim in the US, however. This junta or any other Thai has never told me I must be like them or be demonized as unpatriotic, evil or insane. You may have missed some of the political muck in recent elections, I did not. When you are at war with your neighbor because he has a sign in his lawn supporting another candidate, when you only associate with those at work who back your candidate, when politicians stand up with a straight face and say that Gay marriage will unravel the fabric of society :o when the American president states that God told him to Invade Iraq, :D ...... yes, I did seek safer ground. The people that intentionally divide the country to win votes, don't realize that the damage lasts long after the election is over. Lucid enough for you??

while i appreciate your criticism of of your idealist view of the U.S., you certainly do not seem to be very versed in either world based reality, or, particularly, Thai reality on the subjects that you seem to detest in your home country. we are talking about Thailand, are we not?

  11. Of course.

What's significant about all of this is that the main topics for the seminar are stuff that's normally not (allowed to be) discussed in Thailand in the open. (Including on this site, I gather)

from what i understand you are to a certain extent correct. however, it also seems that in certain circles, there was discussion of boycotting this event because of this issue, and the limits of constraint that is inherent on the speakers.

  12. Not sure why everyone is blaming Thaksin alone for selling Shin Corp to Temasek. The deal could only go ahead because SCB agreed to back the deal. Ina deal worth billions of dollars and one involving sellling important assets, the major shareholders of SCB will have given their go ahead for the deal.

The major shareholder in SCB is CPB. And who has final say in everything that the CPB does? . . . someone who cannot be mentioned.

Not everything is as simple as it seems in Thailand.

Such a revealing post. Siam Commercial Bank, Crown Property Bureau.......enough said.

    My sentiments exactly.

    i actually got physically sick.

  13. "the peoples alliance for democracy, which spearheaded the year long anti Thaksin demonstration that eventually triggered the former prime ministers "downfall" has already vowed to return to the streets again, if, Samak moves to seek amnesty for the former Thai Rak Thai executives OR meddle with the corruption investigations against Thaksin...... so the Democrats did instigate the coup, or so this statement would seem to infer.

  14. lest we forget... friday june 01, 2007... thailand military coup leader supports amnesty for ousted P.M. i actually found the Asian Sentinal piece posted a bunch of pages back quite in line with my thinking.

Is that the one where a few days later it came to pass it was a misprint and or and putting words in his mouth? Not to mention it never happened.

can't really say. try to google" arrest warrant thaksin shinawatra" and look for "jurist". believe a pa. university or some such thing. just another piece of some puzzle or other.

Probably best just to go and poke around in that thread to find the answer but I do recall some mention of some anxious people wanting that. About 111 of them I think. Perhaps a news leak by them... :o

as i did state before, post no.535 somehow hit my nerve. if your search uncovers any other unique bits of info, i am sure you will post them.

  16. my best holidays wishes to Thailand. pls. solve this problem by charging Dr. Thaksin with the evidence against him, and fight it out in a court of law. you do have a court of law don't you? pls. forgive my naivety.

Not so easy when Dr Thaksin fails to show up in court, to face his trials, and prefers to become a fugitive from justice instead.

i really am not too up on all this, so pls. bear with me. are you stating that Thailand issued a international arrest warrant for the Dr.? i actually thought that he was barred from entering the country.

Arrest Warrants Issued For Former PM Thaksin And His Wife

Thaksin May Face More Arrest Warrants

and exactly who is hampering his arrest and extradition back to Thailand? it's not like no one knows where he is. my god, a fugitive is not what it used to be, i guess.

7 minutes?? That was extremely fast reading for 2 rather lengthy threads.... :o

but anyway, it's Thaksin who is hampering his arrest. Extraditions world-wide are often bogged down for years with litigations... his case is not so different from many others.

if Thaksin is "hampering" his own arrest ... i give up.

In any extradition, if the defendant wishes to contend the extradition and not comply with an arrest warrant (which many defendants willingly do so chose to comply with an arrest warrant) then it can be construed as hampering his arrest.

i won't belabor the point, but the Thai can just add it to the Drs. court docket if and or when he returns.

  18. On the prosecution point, everyone stalled because they were concerned that Thaksin would one day return, and he is famous for bearing grudges with enthusiasm over years, for perceived disloyalty.

    Regards

agree with your sentiments. since the judicial system has no "teeth" when it comes to those of power, the Thai " ain't gettin nowwhere".
