  1. My son in law is ex military. Took voluntary redundancy 2 years ago after 23 years service aged 41.

Nice lump sum and services pension.

Still has 25 years to collect an additional company pension + state pension, although I can see him calling it a day at 55.

You earned your military pension Matt, enjoy life while your young and fit enough. Good luck mate.

Thats the plan to enjoy smile.png
Thanks and goodluck to you and your son in law (big thanks from me for service so long...WELL DONE) too
    All best!
    Cheers

  2. Hey.

Im below 50 and living in Thailand.

I know u dont want to do ED but i am at school learning not thai languege. smile.png Cost 30000 a year (not included imigration fees) I dont even have to go to imigration every 3 months, my school takes care of it.

Officially u HAVE too go classes... officialy. wink.png;) if u know what i mean wink.png

1 year can stay inside thailand no need leaving.

So this is an option for u or turists visas.

If u plan traveling alot making visas runs every 3-4months then better stay here on tourist visa.

If u want driver license etc and stay here longer i think ED is less hassle. U can sit 1year non stop here.

    Cheers

The very reason for the clampdown on ED visas !

In Phuket, Bangkok, Pataya...yes but not everywhere.

    If system allows it...i use.

And if im not mistaken i those 3 places u still dont have too go to school if u pay 5000 at imigration at extection so they dont "check" u attend school or not.

So what kind of clampdown is it? Just to get more cash from us thats all.

  3. Thanks ubonjoe.

Tourist tripple entry will probably be a goer then... although the elite program would be awesome it's a little out of my price range smile.png

Not trying to be flippant, but you are not working, but want to stay in Thailand and cannot afford the Elite program. What exactly are your financial resources to do so ?

I don't think that's any of your business.

Many Civil servants for example qualify for full earnings related pensions after 21 years service.

Private Pensions or Investments could also be another source of monthly income below the age of 50.

Well said! :) Im retired military and below 50...always rises question when asked what i do i answer retired...everyone surprised that im not 50 and retired :)

Sometimes really dont understand that rule 50 plus retired visa but hey there are other visas to get.

Not planning to stay here looooong time...more places to see in world before i die. :D

  5. Go to MBK and have a walk around.. Be aware that some frequency's are Japanese only!

    Thanks...

Yes i know its need to be unlocked. but 305 is for GSM networks so should work just fine.

Gem arena seems to imply that there is a US version as well which is CDMA. anyway looks like a funky phone but with fairly basic spec's. Good luck

Yes the 306 is for US market. Thats why couse of its "funkyiness" i would like to check it out :)

  6. spart....
I understood. That's why I posted my first message giving you some addresses. But once there, see the restaurants and bars farangs Cham Am. And do not forget the plans of cities.
    My English is deplorable. sorry.gif

I will check out bars and ask around like i always do in new places :) Got some experience...moving around for many years now.

No sorry for english its not my first either so i understand :) :)

  7. Try the Shopping Mall for cheaper goods

Shopping mall in Hua hin is cheap, because old fashion " supermarket " ( go there for normal goods ( soap, oil, rice, tooth paste ... )

it's not far from the Clock place ( everybody knows it, there is a big picture of the king )

attention : there are several places they call " shopping mall "; mine is written " shopping mall " but you must look up to see the writing

Thanks :) i look for it next month :)

  8. But do not worry like that. It's not as if you have a medical emergency, huh!
When you are in Cha Am, ask a farang who runs a bar or restaurant, and he will answer you.
Otherwise, in Hua Hin, the shopping center "the Market Village" is located in 88/1, coming from Cha Am on the road Petchkasem. Other stores are also on Petchkasem, always even numbers.
Ask for a detailed plan to tourist accommodation, there stores it.

    Thanks for directions.

Im gonna live there not as tourist already have house waiting.

No not medical emergency but though i ask for advice people living there already...why not :)

  9. hello,
Cha Am, you have a BIG C, coming from Hua Hin, 800 meters after the traffic lights on Narethip on the right down to the beach.
There MAKRO but 15 or 20kms of Cha Am, Hua Hin management. But blah !!!
Otherwise, people come to HH, where there are few supermarkets and shopping mall, Market Village.
Tesco, G, Schopping mall, Villa Market. It is worth. And contrary to what is claimed, Villa Market is cheaper or identical products at Tesco Shopping Mall and is very interesting.

Thse shops u mentioned i know them from here in Phuket...they everywhere :)

Ofcourse i will check them out.

Still looking for shops even cheaper then that there couse i know there should be :) If i found very cheap one in phuket should be there too.

Thanks for advice on those anyway.

  10. Some immigration officers need to iron their yellow T shirts before wearing them too.

Iron those sport pants with 3 stripes on side too thumbsup.gif

I should wear long suit pants or jeans and nice shirt not mention shoes to stand there for full day to show them my respect... maybe it should work both ways, show me some respect back and no problem i dress in suit if need. ;)Quid pro quo Imigration Quid pro quo.

  11. Thailand is far too expensive.

I wouldnt agree tooo expensive but yes not cheap anymore like it was.

There are cheaper and much more "visa frindly" places to retire or stay longer.

And u pay there same prizes as everyone else there not like here cuse u white u pay more and nw even more in national parks to visit.

Way too much overprized things. All will end with time for thaiand less and less people tourist and retirees couse they will find other better places to live.

  12. <script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script>

The 20k baht max fine is set by the immigration act of 1979. Until it is amended or a new one is written it will not be changed.

    <script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script>

The fine is 500 a day, with a maximum of 20,000 baht.

thanks for info so i guess not truth what i heard. any idea of plans of changing that? by imigratin or whatever?

What is being proposed now is that unlike before, pay your 20,000 bahts and that is it, is that bans on entry to Thailand (timespan of ban related to the length of overstay) will be imposed on the offender.

This is not yet law, but is in process. Advice would be, if you currently have an overstay issue, get it sorted out now if you want to come back to Thailand in the near future.

Thanks for all the info...not on overstay but was curious about those changes. Thanks

Just met a man,who retired in Panama together with his wife. I was astound by his story, about the retirement preferences in Panama, compared to Thailand.

First, he and his wife own a big lot of land and do farming in Panama, LEGALLY.

Second, as per him, any expat gets 25% discount on any airfare or visit to a doctor... etc.

Third, exchange rate is the same for any dollar bills: either it's $1 or $100.

No one charges you extra fees for visiting a museum or National Park,if you are a foreigner.

    And so on .....

Either Thai Government implements drastic changes or they will start losing even more foreigners due to a ridiculous attitude toward them

Granada (Not Spain) U.K. controlled, check that one out, far superior for cheap places to live than Thailand. I only use Thailand because it is convenient no other reason.

I agree on both places for retirement and costs of living, there are countries that are cheaper even if same costs far mre friendly for retirement or long stay visitors. I mean imigration laws prizes and much more. Latly i read thailand is best place for retirement in 2015 tottaly disagree. and i think and hope more and more people will realize that then maybe but just maybe Thai goverment might do something about all that visa mess they making now. Not to mention jacking prizes up just couse u not local.

U come to retire not to spend your time in offices of imigration for hours at a time but to relax and spend good time in hot climate.
