  1. I think it would be a good idea for someone who recieves NFL games here in Chiang Mai to host a party at his or her house on a weekly basis. The people who came could bring chips and drinks and etc. Like a little club or something! A club that meets in the middle of the night on Mondays!

  2. sounds good.  It is a great location.  Right at the Central shopping complex and near to both the moat and Nimannheimin.

I look forward to your report.  Be sure to ask them what they will charge you for electricity.

what's Nimannheimin? 6 baht/unit for electric, i know that's steep but the place is worth it. 150 baht for water a month is standard, but if you go over the 'allowance' it's more per 'unit'. the lady assured me most apts. with 2 people stay under that limit. also a movie theatre right across the street playing some current american flicks.

  3. Thanks for the tip on Huaykaew Residence. I just signed a lease with them and I move in tomorrow. 3500 baht gets you 24 sqm., air-con, TV, hot water. 4000 gets you the same with a nicer view. I opted for the 4000 (for 3500 you get to stare at another building directly next to you). Bed, dresser, etc. Brand new looking, about 6 tall buildings. Pale white with blue accent buildings directly to the right of Orchard Hotel, NW of the NW corner of the city center. Very friendly/helpful staff. Frirst month's rent, 2 month's deposit, 1000 baht for keycard into the building. Looks like a lot of expats. Security guard at gate. Maybe a 5 min walk from city center. Internet but it costs a little extra, 200 baht a month I think. I'll let you know more once I move in.

  4. There is at least one flight every hour till 5 PM.  I usually fly Air Thai.  Funny but I have never changed planes from an international flight there but I think the terminals are right next to one another.  The planes were not that full when I left BKK a month ago for CM but don't know about now.  Air Thai should be able to give you all the information over the phone.

I just bought a flight from BKK - Chiang Mai for 1399 baht through http://www.fly12go.com/en/main.shtml. Haven't flown them yet so I can't give a review but that's the cheapest I found online. They're having a sale.

  5. Has anyone here had any satisfaction in booking on line with either Air Asia or Nok Air ,  here in Chiang Mai?

I would considering satisfaction in just getting the booking information, i.e. schedule, price and availability.  I can connect with all other major airlines but not with these two, expecially Air Asia.

Has anyone ever done the whole thing and completed the flight, all arranged online ?

I actually just purchased a one-way ticket from BKK to CM, all-online, for 1399 baht. It was through http://www.fly12go.com/en/main.shtml. I don't fly until later in October, so I can't tell you anything about how good they are yet.

  6. An O-A is ONLY for retirement and no work. An O can be based on retirement ( also no work ) or support of a Thai wife or child. In the case of support a work permit can be obtained.

Bumping this thread because I just spoke to the Denver consulate office and wanted to provide some up-to-date information.

The lady I spoke to (not Jen) said they would turn around a non-immigrant visa application the same day they recieved it. Here is what you need to send them:

    The application

$125 money order, made out to "DW Ringsby"

    Passport

    2 passport-sized photographs

    Self-addressed stamped envelope

They won't do FedEx or UPS, only USPS. Whatever kind of postage you include on your self-addressed stamped envelope is how fast you'll get it back. For instance, you can include an Express Mail envelope with Express postage (usually about $15 bucks) and in theory, you'll get it back the day after they mail it.

  7. I apologize if my post was a little abrasive. I had a bad first impression of the TV forums. The first post I ever... posted was asking to recommend an apartment at or around 2500/baht a month. Here's the reply I got:

I find it extraordinary that self-respecting farang would leave their home country to come to live in Thailand if they only have enough money to live in a 2500 baht box. I mean, why do it? It can't be for the lifestyle. It can't be quality of life.

If you have no money, ok . .stay where you are and use welfare, rather than be dragged into a poverty spiral in Thailand. I would never live here unless I can do it on my terms and in relative luxury?

So is it for the girls? That is flawed too. You're not going to get much respect from women when they discover you are farang kee nok.

    Seems very sad to me.

This might not be a fair representation of the whole board, but it was by a member who's been here a while and gave me a bad taste in my mouth.

I gave up on TV until I discovered the Chiang Mai forum and found it to be a pretty good source of info on a place that's not real easy to get specific information on from the net. But it seems to me that most of the posters on here are living in places that run over 10,000 baht/month, and that's not budget living; maybe among ex-pats in Thailand, but not in Thailand as a whole.

Boots N' All is certainly more oriented toward the backpacker looking for short-term stays and not necessarily an apartment or long-term rental.

I'm no ex-pat, and I'm certainly not a typical Pattaya/Kho Sahn Road backpacker either. I'm simply looking for a relaxed place to live for 7 months, soaking up what I can and taking that time to improve myself as a person. My travelogue is at mattloaf1.blogspot.com, and I'd recommend it to anyone on the board looking for specific information on budget living in CM. I get into Thailand on October 21, and I'm sure I'll run into a few of you during my stay in CM. Again, I apologize for seeming hostile, and I hope I can share and recieve some good information from this board!

  8. I haven't been here long, but I can tell you this is not the forum you want to be on if you're looking for information on budget living in Thailand. I might suggest doing some searching of Boots N All [http://boards.bootsnall.com/groupee/forums/a/frm/f/448097925] for information. I've got a budget of about 15k baht/month. From the research I've done, it's certainly doable, if you're willing to forgo luxuries such as air conditioning and daily hand jobs.

  9. Here's a pretty excellent site I found: side-by-side comparisons of daily and monthly rates in Chiang Mai.

    http://www.chiangmai-online.com/apart.html

Looks like the average for a month w/ AC is about 2,500... I realize most of these are guesthouses, but I would guess that means regular apts. can't be far off that price. Maybe no kitchen, TV, or fridge, but I can pretty well guess from my research how much each of those amenities would add to the price of a place.

  10. Some very good posts on this thread, especially the fella from NYC.  My apologies to the OP for jumping down his throat and appearing condescending.

If the dream is to live in Thailand for a long time and to have cheap accomodation so the trip can be extended, my own preference would be to forget those 2500 crapartments in the outer reaches of Sukhumvit and instead head to one of the island or even a smaller city like Chiang Mai where 4000 would get you a very decent apartment or even house.

Or perhaps there is a reason why it has to be Bangkok.

Either way, good luck with your plans, and no offence.

I was actually wondering what Chiang Mai prices were like, but couldn't find any good information online to that end. Let me maybe give you some background on my situation to help you better understand what I'm looking for.

I'm going to be living in Thailand for 7 months. My life, at this point, is based on the idea of working about 5 months in the summer, and traveling the rest of the year (November - May). This is the first winter I'll be doing this, and decided on Thailand for some of the obvious reasons: lower cost of living, awesome cultural opportunities, etc. I'm not looking for a hooker, or Full Moon Parties, or anything like that. I simply want a cheap place I can live and explore the rest of SE Asia, if I can afford to. So the cheaper the place I get, the more traveling I can do. SW China (Yunnan and Sichuan) is the #1 place on my list, so Chiang Mai would be attractive based on its relative proximity to China compared to Bangkok.

I'd love to hear more about Chiang Mai's housing options, if anyone has lived there, or any specific places they can recommend. I'm more than happy to spend 4,000 a month if it means having a comfortable place.

Thanks everyone for your help so far.
