  1. Panel backs wage-hike plan

    By Business Reporters

    The Nation

Committee in favour of 2-step approach towards implementing Bt300-a-day minimum wage

The Wage Tripartite Committee yesterday voiced initial support for the Pheu Thai Party's controversial election promise to raise the daily minimum wage to Bt300. However, its provincial sub-committees later proposed a two-step approach - one for major provinces and another for the rest of the country - far below the Pheu Thai plan.

The panel, which brings together representatives of the government, employers and workers, proposed that the daily wage of Bt300 should start in Bangkok, nearby provinces and Phuket as a pilot project.

However, the panel's provincial sub-committees were apparently not prepared for the big increase. After the meeting, Labour Ministry permanent secretary Somkiat Chayasriwong disclosed that sub-committees in 75 provinces had proposed an increase of Bt2 to Bt28 for 35 key provinces, while the remaining 40 provinces should get gradual adjustments to the same rates starting early next year. The proposed increase is a far cry from the Pheu Thai Party's Bt300 minimum-wage proposal.

The WTC will call another meeting early next month to consider the issue further.

Somkiat said the Wage Tripartite Committee agreed that hiking the wage to Bt300 should start in some provinces, including Bangkok and nearby provinces and Phuket. The minimum wage in Bangkok and nearby provinces is currently Bt215 and in Phuket it is Bt221. The remaining provinces would then be gradually adjusted, he said.

"We should wait until the new Labour Minister comes into office to manage the way the adjustment [is handled]," Somkiat said.

Somkiat warned that the minimum-wage policy would draw more labourers from neighbouring countries such as Cambodia, Laos and Burma, because they would also be entitled to reap the benefits of the higher wage environment. "I met Pheu Thai Party secretary-general Jarupong Ruangsuwan, to exchange views on this issue, but he didn't put any pressure on the ministry."

Meanwhile, the Centre for International Trade Studies at The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce warned yesterday that Pheu Thai's populist policy to increase the minimum wage was likely to undermine exports, especially from labour-intensive industries. An increase in the minimum wage will mean higher costs and decreased revenue and efficiency, it said.

Centre director Aat Pisanwanich revealed that increasing the daily minimum wage to Bt300 and the starting salary for bachelor's degree graduates to Bt15,000 per month would increase costs of production by a monumental 28 per-cent. Production costs would soar by 31.5 per cent in the services sector and by 26.5 per cent for manufactured goods. Hence, exporters of food and tobacco goods will have to contend with a 35-per-cent rise in costs, the embroidery industry with 34-per-cent higher costs and the paper industry with a rise of 22 per cent.

As a consequence of the 39.5-per-cent increase in the minimum wage alone, hiking it from Bt215 to Bt300, costs of production will increase by an average 22 per cent; 29.6 per cent for manufactured goods and 19 per cent for the service sector, Aat said. Labour-intensive industries will suffer most from the minimum-wage increase.

Similarly, the increased starting salary for bachelor's degree graduates, raising it from Bt11,000 to Bt15,000, or an increase of 36 per cent, will prompt an overall increase in production costs of 5.7 per cent - 1.9 per cent for manufactured-goods industries and 7.3 per cent for the service sector, Aat said.

The paper industry will be hardest hit, with costs rising by 5.4 per cent, followed by textile and garment industries, with a1.5-per-cent rise in costs, and the tobacco industry, with costs rising by 0.8 per cent.

The UTCC's Centre for International Trade Studies said the value of Thailand's exports was likely to grow by 13 to 17 per cent, to between US$221 billion and $229 billion (Bt6.69 trillion and Bt6.94 trillion). It predicted that export industries would grow by 9.5 per cent to a value of $112 billion during the second half of 2011.

Although export industries have recorded significant growth of 21.5 per cent over the first half of this year, it is expected that industries will grow by a mere 9.5 per cent throughout the third and fourth quarters of 2011.

Moreover, the slow recovery of the global economy due to skyrocketing crude-oil prices and persisting public debt problems in European nations will stimulate the decline in Thailand's export growth, it said.

    Negative effects

Raising the minimum daily wage to Bt300 and giving graduates a starting salary of Bt15,000 will hit the Kingdom's exports, with textile and garments and paper and paper products manufacturing being hardest hit by the significant increase in production costs.

    Production costs increase:

By 22.3% (if the daily wage is Bt300)

By 5.7% (if Bt15,000 is starting salary)

    Hi all.

Sorry to say the gullible PT supporters believed the pre election promise, 300Baht per day across the board

And now they are waiting for Yingluck to deliver.

  2. Most Immigration Offices will accept that as the funds are available instantly.

    Hi Lite Beer

I have a fixed account with Kasikorn Bank ,Khonkaen Imm would not accept my Bankbook It reads clearly

At the top of the bankbook FIXED INCOME FUND. All the officer said "We dont accept bonds' ,

My bank assures me that it is not a bond she will not accept it.This was back in February but i got around it by importing more money from uk Into my normal savings account but I had to buy a 60 day visa for wife visit and then drop down to a Marriage visa, All in All a lot of grief and about 5 visits to Imm.

So could you publish IMM head office address in BKK I want to send copies of my Fixed Account Book and get a ruling in writing to show Khonkaen Imm if they should accept it or not.

  3. Hi All.

This is a typical thread where everyone who is even remotly Red is seen to attack

the Dems. Yes we know they won a landslide at the polls, But that does not overule the law, You all know how much respect Thaksin has for the Law.

Abhisit in his role as leader of the opposition has a duty to expose anything that is remotely suspect in the behaviour of the Gov, And Thaksin's involvment in the present Gov is illegal..Full Stop,, And just because they won the election.Should not be ignored.

  4. Hhhhmmm, convenient timing. Wait until amnesty talks are on the table, then turn yourself in, and get absolved of charges in a month. At least he could have done his one year like a man first.......where's the backbone???? Maybe he'll make a good minister????

    Hi .

I dont think that amnesty will cover Terrorism or Lese Majeste charges the only chance all the Red leaders

have if Thaksin appoints the Judge as before.

  5. Hi All.

Going off topic a little bit ,can any of the members who follow the politics more than I do post a list of PT promises to the electorate, I will make a start if you can add to the list ,,,,,please do.

    Laptop Computer,for every student,

300 baht per day minimum wage,

    Credit Card for all Farmers.

    20,oooBaht per tonne for rice

I am sure there is a lot more but I cannot remember, Please add to the list as i would like to see just how many PT promises come true.

  6. If we take some time out to do the maths, 35 million people are expected to cast their votes. So, 50% is 17.5 million people, and enough for a majority.

Now, the word from the countryside is that 300 baht per vote is the going rate. That's approx 10 USD.

Ergo, the clear implication is, that power can be purchased for 175 million USD.

Moving along swiftly, a certain person, recently residing in Montenegro and Dubai, is reported to be out of pocket to the tune of 45 Billion baht, or 1500 million USD, to keep the maths simple and easy to understand.

That could be called a risk/reward ratio or something like that. --- either 1/6 or 6 to 1.

What I would like to know, is how can Farangs buy a ''part of the action''

i think you need to take a little more time to do the math.

    how does 175/1500 = 1/6 or 6 to 1??

You are correct , of course. I had made an arbitrary adjustment for the expense of making the project a reality. Money is the oil in the machine concept. Even 2 to 1 would do me nicely -- we don't want to be greedy, do we??

  7. Since an amnesty for Thaksin (and others) has been central to the PTP platform and Yingluck has assigned the task of the amnesty to Chalerm ----- I would say that perhaps Natthawut is not telling the truth .... AGAIN.

Even if Yingluck wins and somehow arranges some kind of amnesty.I dont think Thaksin will have the guts to come back like a hero, too scared of assasination especially if the Reds are on the streets ,which is likely, You can be assured that all the red leaders have their plan B they know it is the end if Thaksin is killed and all will dissappear overnight.

  8. Hi all.

SAF just cannot control his temper when Man U lose, he has a long history of blaming the referee But not a word on the Rooney incident against Wigan or on the blatant last man foul earlier in the season committed by Gary Neville 100% Red card But got away with it.I feel sure SAF commended the Ref that day.

Check with your immigration office first,

I had 1.4 million baht sitting in a Thai account just for the purpose of renewing my retire ment visa, Iwent to my Bank a couple of weeks before my renewal to order a letter that my money had been in the bank for 4 years , the teller in the bank said why dont you fix this money you can get 2% no tax ok say's I ,I am not moving any money from the Bank just a case of changing account number, Immigration in Khonkaen would not renew my extension on the 3month rule although she knew the money was in the Bank a long time , So now I am on a 60 day visit my wife visa and at the end of 60 days I will qualify for a marriage visa because i have more than 400.000bt in my normal every day account

be very careful different office sometimes different outcome.

  10. phupaman, was your discount from a Bangkok dealer?

Sounds as if the freebies might be fairly consistent. Took a 1.6 Trend hatch for a good run today. Just asking on what was on offer and 10 things offered. Film, some sort of paint protection, anti-rust, floor mats, boot liner, number plate cover, scuff guards on the doors, some sort of weather sill on the doors, car cover and a 500 baht petrol voucher. No mention of any further discount but dealership was busy and we weren't pushing very hard. Asked about free insurance but politely rejected as just not possible.

I thought it wasn't bad for a budget small car. It was raining heavily during our test drive but handled the conditions well. We get to drive a few different cars but now really only need something for short local trips plus the occasional trip out of Bangkok so will decide between the Fiesta and the Honda City. I quite like the City but my wife who has driven a City plenty of times said she would prefer the Fiesta, more fun to drive. A bit more engine noise I thought but a sedan might be quieter. Fuel economy on the Ford is much better. We will probably end up with the Ford for the simple reason that when we looked at the City in a dealership owned by the same company as the Ford dealer we were told we needed to order within a week just to get delivery in two months time. The Fiesta was available immediately, good range of colors and models.

    Hi Kerry

We bought our Fiesta in Khonkaen, We got everything you got plus 5,000bt discount.

The sales manager is a lady and everything she promised us was true ,I am a bit wary of car sales people as most of them I have met do not know how to speak the truth, But we give top marks to the sales team in Khonkaen,First class service.

  12. HI All.

A question for the experts on this forum.

I have had a thai retirement visa for 4 years, and have had 1,462,000.00 thai baht in Kasikorn Bank earning nothing so last week I went into the bank to arrange a letter fo immigration, and the girl in the bank asked me would i like to put this money into a fixed account for 6 monthes tax free at 2%, why not Ithought ,it is still in a thai bank.

So today I go to Khonkaen Immigration armed with all relevant forms and photocopies and Bank books,I was told cannot re-new visa as fixed account not allowed , so i went back to my bank and got another letter explaining that their is at leasi 800,000 baht that i can withdraw at any time no way said Immigration ,So I am now forced toget a 60 day extension and scramble to get 400,000 baht into a new accout so that i can get a marriage visa.I must mention that today was for my 90 days and my extension runs out on Feb 15th, Were they correct to refuse me on account that i switched to a fixed Bank Account?
