  1. i am on a tourist stamp and opened my account at BKK bank last week. Same problem, limit only 50k per day. I asked the bank to change it. Mai dai ka... i tried on the app on my phone and on my computer and same, "cannot" it says i have to contact the branch to change it. So i tried over the phone, cannot. Now we are 1 week later and i transfered 500k into my account. I tried again today to change the limit on my computer and this time it worked. All limits have been increased to 500K.

I guess if your account is empty or has a low balance you are not allowed to change the limit, even the bank. Dont know if that's the reason or if i was just lucky. I'd go with the first one.

The issue was not with you and I thank you for the information - it is with the bank taking advantage of their customers - have never appreciated these hard sell cards regardless of the bank.

Apologise for my quite harsh reply. I misunderstood your post. I guessed already they still had the basic VISA cards while in the bank but off course they didn't understood what i was talking about so i thought i just take it and get out. We cannot win every fight :)

  3. i went today to bangkok bank located in huai kwang, very friendly staff. I explained them the situation and they immediately changed it for a visa card without any problem. I did have to pay 690 for the first year and then 590 per year. It comes with accident coverage of 5000bht. They still had alot of visa cards available. Hope it helps!

  4. Isn't it getting really difficult to open a bank account with ATM & debit card without a work permit nowadays?

I opened mine on a Ed-visa. Atm and debit cards use the money available in your account, no risks for the bank. Got my card immediately

  5. Always go to your home branch for stuff like that. If at all possible, close your account immediately with incompetents. I have four bank accounts here, never an ATM card. I think I've paid their ATM fee once in 18 years. I don't bank with US banks, that charge fees, either. Also, it seems like they eventually would have pulled your card out of the machine....seems like it would have been reasonable to put a staff member in charge of getting it back and calling you to pick it up. Why people bank at places with the worst rates is also puzzling.

Thats exactly what happened with me. I called the bank immediately, they asked me where the atm was located. The staff from SCB called me the next day to pick up my old card. Problem was solved with 1 phone call. Didn't need to have a new card.

  6. Wife and I are thinking about making a trip to Bali for about a week. Not sure when but maybe June/July. Any general suggestions/recommendations? I'll think of more specific questions as plans develop.

Went to bali 7 years ago. One advice i could give you is to change your money in the official exchange shops only. You will find many fake small exchange shops who promise you a better rate. Some looks more legit then others. Its a famous scam in bali. The police is with them as they get their cut so dont hope to get help from them. If you do change your money with them, make sure you are the last who count the money and in front of them.
