  1. Any Thai is not going to listen to any advice from a farang no matter what the farangs "business" model

That's why so many Thai businesses go under within 3 years. Like that postage stamp sized cafe on Moonmuang not far from Thapae Gate. 4 years ago it was a bank.

Any Farang that opens a cafe / restaurant is obviously not going to listen to what anyone says because they know better

No one should listen to a racist either.

  2. " Those who would be most affected are those gaming the system and making multiple extensions each year, such as those using back to back tourist visas and those with an ED visa."

No one is "gaming the system." If the thai govt gives you a right to enter for any reason, then that is just as valid as any other

there is no moral hierarchy in anyone's motives for getting a visa

  3. Does anyone know where a working shop is in CM, preferably in the old city?

There used to be shops like this along Chang Puak not far from Chang Puak gate, but Chang Puak is going high society,

so the industrial shops are being pushed out.

I suspect these shops may have moved to sidestreets.

I am looking for a shop that can do basic sanding, sawing, drilling...

  4. You may actually have a good point there.

It is possible to have a turn-around, but you need to start up a business that will attract customers.

For example, do a restaurant with a free Kareoke machine and a little stage and I'm sure you can get quite a big crowd.

Or do a gaming centre, with about 24 or so computers for gaming and some old arcade style machines as well as a DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) machine. You'll see how quickly you can make a turn-around with those.

Main thing you will need is a "catchy" name for the business that says it all in one go (and in thai) like maybe "555 S̄nuk" with your logo being an animated person holding a gaming controller with a gaming headset on his head laughing.

It is also important to deal with things and attract customers that you like. If someone does not like gaming environments or the people attracted to them, then that would be unsuccessful.

There are ways to change either the environment or the business model, but this would involve consultation with the owner and an assessment of the physical set up of the existing business, as well as other factors.

  5. Amorn ,has lots of small cutting tools, made in China,

    regards Worgeordie

    Where is Amorn, please?

    I know of two locations:

Big C on Hang Dong Road, interior store on the east side of the north end of the first floor.

Big C Extra on Super Highway, exterior store on the north end, entries from the parking area on both the east and west sides.

    Grin

I operate inside the old city and down toward the river at Worarot market.

Where is Hang Dong rd relative to this?

Amorn may be a chain of electrical supply stores, they may have a branch at Icon Square along the moat.

  6. When you say 'College'--what exactly do you mean?

It may be self-evident to others, but I am not sure; do you mean schools--if so, what Grades?

    University, tertiary level

the big time, the ivory tower, call your teachers professors etc

I am looking for undergrad textbooks

  7. Don't believe they are "Made in Japan" just because they say they are. I met a guy selling surgical instruments here. Some said "Made in Pakistan" while others said "Made in Germany". He told me that they were all made in Pakistan in the same factory but that many people would pay much more money for the ones that said they were "Made in Germany".

I was just sold some clippers that the iron-monger assured me were made in Germany. He would not budge from 380 B. They were not even as good as my worn out Japanese label pair that I am looking to replace.

Nana Screw on the road going from the moat to JJ Market has higher quality tools than any other places. I don't think they stock any Chinese tools which I hate.

Can you clarify this location a bit more? Do you mean Thapae road going east away from the moat toward the river? Where is JJ Market?

  8. for jewelry making small wire cutters are needed

the quality of the steel is the issue as contact with other metals, usually brass or nickel based wire can wear out the cutting edge

a pair I paid over 400 B for in Bkk have worn out, which surprises me since the label says they are Japanese

you don't necessarily get the best tools at jewelry supply shops though

does anyone know of a source for strong wire cutters in Chiang Mai? and what brand is best?

  9. At <snip> near Chiang Mai Gate, a rat climbed under a woman's mosquito net and was walking on here chest before she became aware of it and woke up. This happened on December 16 2014.

Rats can be seen regularly scurrying in the corners of the building.

You can hear them running through spaces in the ceiling.

  10. being away from Asia for awhile I forgot. I thought I could order ice tea and get...maybe just some lipton

but in many places in Asia they bring you this red tea that scrapes the throat as it goes down, as if they boil it with bricks from ancient sewer systems

you will know it because, if you order milk tea, they will bring you a glass of orange stuff

where do they get this stuff?

why do they call it tea?

how can you order some decent ice tea in Asia without going to a starbucks knockoff

surely Asians know about tea of all people

  11. If you are going to Zoe for the *music*, then you are doing it wrong.

Zoe is a lot like Spicy.... People don't go there because they want to be wow'ed by a great DJ.

people go there to dance. but the dances are cut short just when they get going. just go there and see what the people are doing.

  12. the dj they have now cannot create a set

he will play a good dance beat for a while then stop it and sample a song with no rhythm, then suddenly start the dance rhythm again

then when you think the groove has started, he cuts that off and samples another song

a good dj can keep a dance going

  13. What kind of business? Thailand makes 40% of the worlds hard drives and is the 10th largest manufacturer of autos in the world. However if I wanted to make wine Thailand would be very close to the bottom of my list.

You have mentioned manufacturing businesses, and your response is a bit OT, since I am talking about the business address apart from the place where business is actually conducted.

The limitations you imply might not restrict a consulting business.

  14. i think you are trying to make money off farang knowing they have already been ripped off.

No, that is not the purpose. Anyone can benefit from making changes to improve revenue, whether they are just starting out, have started a greenfield business, or have experienced some setbacks.

I think some europeans and americans get fooled by expats and thais in thailand try to sell them businesses that are really not making any money.

but there is always a chance they can take a bad thing and make a good think out of it.

  15. I think all the USA pre paid cards require that your are a USA citizen and have SS number

How do the illegals get a pre paid card ?

or someone visiting the USA that wants to use the card when they travel around the USA ?

or want to send it back to thailand and fund it from the USA

the pre-paid part solves the problem of user reliability.

the user buys the card with exactly the amount the card is good for. There is no risk to the issuer.

  16. Kasikorn Bank (Main Branches only) issued my credit card many years ago. 200,000 Baht cash deposited into an locked account(The bank holds the book) for a 200,000 Baht credit limit VISA credit card, that can be used internationally for any purpose. A friend tells me that he has recently been issued a credit card at this bank without any security deposit, so things appear to getting a little easier.

Note: Issuance of the card is 'discretionary' by the bank - I am not sure one could just walk off the street and get a credit card without establishing some sort of relationship with the bank first, since once the front office minions had finished with the paperwork, the final sign off occurred only after a friendly chat with the bank manager -....

thanks for the info but I was more interested in a one-off easy purchase that could be made for single purchases. Actually making friends with bank personnel is a bit much.
