  1. I thinks it's time the media contacts the PM for statement .

    Saturday 11 October 2014

Thai PM defends investigation into Britons murder

Prayuth Chan-ocha says correct culprits have been caught, after Burmese president demands fair trial for suspects

"Nobody would dare catch the wrong person because this is a case of big international interest.

    http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/oct/10/burma-fair-trial-thailand-backpacker-murders

On the other hand, giving the long corrupt record of the police, we come to expect the sacrificial scapegoat and a many have been offered up in Thailand. Most Thais I know just want this case to go away because it effects their face and pockets. I challenge you to find a Thai that you're not slapping meat to that is participating in the conversation of these murders and truly gives a rats ass about foreigners murdered, assaulted or are mysteriously found dead and accused of suicide.

I really live in the sticks (kalasin, in Isaan). But alltough Thai television does not give the trial much attention (apart from a little bit by ch3), everybody here talks about it and everybody assures me it was Nomsod & his friends who have done it....

  2. It's interesting that the Navy gave Reuters a pass. Didn't want the condemnation of international press? Didn't want to sue one of Thailand's major employers? Terrible that they pick on a small fry just quoting another source for the story.

Or maybe because Reuters did a balanced piece, and PhuketWan only picked out the part accusing the Navy?

I read the paragraph the PhuketWan quoted and was left scratching my head. It must have been

the wrong paragraph because I could not tell why they were upset.

Well, that is the point; The article talks about "naval forces", but the Royal Thai Nay personel translated that in Thai Royal Navy! "Naval forces" can be customs, border patrol, port authoriy, regular army, immigration poliice, fishing regulating observers, and etc . (I cannot know what else I forgot).

  3. These photos are a surprise. I had always thought the custom of women going topless ended before the turn of the last century. Must have been way out in the boonies.

You would be correct in your original thinking. These photos span almost an 80 year period.

Well, if the temperature is right (not too cold, but also not too hot) you can see topless women work in the fields in the Central ( e.g. Kanchanabur, where I lived till a few years agoi) and in the Isaan (e.g. Kalasin, where I live now). The bad news is that those women are all over 50 years of age...

And after work they just sit topless in front of their homes...weird isn,t it?

  4. Great place to live, especially if you don't need the madness of Bangkok, ChiangMai etc. You'll find all you need to make yourself a pleasant life. Not too many farangs.... and that's a plus! Learn Thai, and the Thai ways. CU there.

    Catweazle...are you reallly a newbie?

  5. For me everything went fine. Of course I had to use the bypass-trick (as described earlier in this thread), because I have a Linux-only computer. But Firefox (without Agent-users or so) sailed through the application windows as expected from a browser that once was called Netscape...

As it was Saturday morning I did not expect a reaction within 24/48 hours. But this morning I received an email confirming that it was approved. Going to the status screen I could print out the desired form.

OK, I live in Kalasin, close to Khon Kaen border, and my immigration office is Sakhon Nakhon. It saves me a more than 330 km roundtrip!

  6. Once again the libel laws come to the rescue. The negligent, the ineffective and the criminals with large bank accounts, can always count on the libel laws to ensure accountability will always be kept a safe distance away.

Yeah, and wasn't it Thaksin himself who used these laws the most often ... ?

The truth hurts ... that's the point.

And some people here need to grow a bigger pair of balls or a sense of humor.

Yes, if I remember correctly Thaksin filed 21 libel law suits.....and he did not win a single one of them....

  7. I believe this tragic and heartbreaking video should be seen by all members of the government; by every driver before next getting into their vehicle, and in every school/university.

    https://youtu.be/BFhIQZd0raU

    (warning: graphic images)

This might at last persuade the authorities to increase random breathalyszing to a nation-wide maximum, to cancel the driving licenses of convicted offenders for 5 years in the first case, and for life for re-offending.

In each case, a long jail sentence and a hefty fine.

If not, more and more innocent people will die. And God forbid, it might be one of our own loved ones.

Unfortunely, most Thai drivers do not have a drivers license. And if they are caught by a routine police check they just get a B200 fine, that allows them to drive for another week...

  8. If the fine was set to have an high minimum, IDC would be full of poor people (we're not talking westerners) unable to pay, and that would unsustainable for the department of Immigration that runs the centers, even before the matter of human rights. The judges would have to fine accordingly to the person.

I think fines are discounted with detentions a 200 Bt a day. Suppose a common fine of Bt 5,000, that's 25 days and then the illegal immigrant from the region can be loaded on a locked bus and shipped home. But what do with an indigent foreigner fined Bt 100,000 ? 500 days in detentions then he become a liability if he can;t pay a plane ticket. I don't think the Thai gov.t is happy having the people that has been staying in IDC for years or wants to increase their number.

The intent of the higher fine is to deter people from overstaying because the fine is so low now and is much less than a flight home for many people.

They could set the minimum at 20k baht which would be 100 days in detention.

Most people stuck in detention are there because they don't have the money for a flight home.

Sorry Joe, but didn't you just make the point to lower the fines?

  9. i am dutch smile.png

does the dutch ambassy give statements too and do they ask for proof ??

The Dutch embassy gives a statement of income, but you have to fill in yourself how much. You don't need to show any proof.

There is also a possibility to do do it by mail, but if you live in a part of Thailand where the mail is not trustworthy you'd better go to the embassy in person. I always go to Bangkok myself for that reason (och, het is een leuk jaarlijks uitje!).

  10. You can report by post from anywhere - so long as your return address is the same... wink.png

Hmm, not to those offices who don't accept mailed-in reports, I would have thought.

Which offices are reported to not accept posted in 90 day reports?

There are a few offices that don't allow mailed in reports. Kap Choeng and Korat come to mind. there are others but I can't recall the names at the moment.

Sakhon Nakon doesn't want a mailed report either. Bad for me, because I live halfway between Konkaen and Udon Thani, but because I am just behind the border of Kalasin I have to go to Sakhon Nakorn: 180 km to go and 180 km to go home. But I don't complain: it is done in less than 3 minutes and then I can do some shopping (shoes and clothing that fits me...).

  11. Does anybody think this is a bit odd

British daily The Telegraph said Christina's mother Margaret had posted on her daughter's Facebook page saying she had died of "natural causes" . The Facebook page appeared to be inaccessible Friday - the actual post read - We have lost our beautiful daughter Chrissie in Thailand of natural causes.

If you have just found out your 23 year old daughter has died, would you really want to post on her FB that it was natural causes? that would be the last thing I would be thinking of doing, especially before any kind of autopsy, why did the Mum need to clarify that? perhaps she was advised to put it? perhaps it was not her? my best friend died of cancer and at no point did I feel like writing - 'I have just lost my best friend to cancer', struck me as rather odd as did this bit of reporting on Friday -

The autopsy is not likely to be carried out before Sunday as officials have to wait for a ferry to the mainland.

"There is no ferry today so we will send her body on Saturday night to arrive on the mainland Sunday morning," Lieutenant Colonel Napa said.

Do they not use regular ferries then?

Also this was on her FB page

Arta Ad R.I.P little Girl i was at the samd time at this Hotel and i can forgett how the Police took you out of the room

I feel so sad about you and I am so angry about the owner from the Hotel because they Talk bullshit!!!

After 15 min they clean the room and gives that to another Tourist ( i am sorry for my bad english) but i think the World should know that !!!!

I feel so sorry for the Family

Now you see when we hear stories like this. And we know the history of that bar. And the suspicion around that bar owner.

We wonder !!! And it is said that her body has been held at the Temple with no refrigeration. The same temple that nomsod is a monk at.

Like Hannah we will never know the truth of this.

I do wish people would stop blaming the victim.

What??? Nomsod is a monk at the temple she was kept at???

If this is true it's very very weird,

can you please help verify that, Nomsod is in Koh tao and not at UNi..

Did he do something wrong he has to repent for?

Given there was rape after the two brits were murdered this is a very disturbing thought that this son of the headman is nearby......

Yep. He came back to the island one day before the Frenchman was suicided...

  12. Timeline Sean.

On the night of the murder mon claims. Sean ran into the bar covered in blood. Jok (a worker) cleaned the blood ?

Noon 15th sven chat about murders . ?

    8:00pm 15th party ?

    12:30 fb 16th oh;not you?

    1:00 fb 16th love;love ?

    One needs to look at

A.the time the names were released. 15 or 16.?

    B. What time Sean gave the firstinterview on the beach. The calm interview. ?

We can add it to our time line of sean⏳

And don't forget the witnesses that claimed he came to the bar accompanied by Chris Ware...

Lawyer U Aung Myo Thant, a member of the team, told Mizzima they were calling on the court to summon Mr Christopher Ware and Mr Sean McAnna - friends of the two British murder victims Ms Hannah Witheridge and Mr David Millar - as they could be main witnesses in the case.

“Myanmar witnesses testify that they (Mr Ware and Mr McAnna) are related to the case. When they entered into the bar, they had injuries. Bloods stains were on their guitar. And the time was around 4 o’clock in the early morning,” said U Aung Myo Thant. “But they said they had a motorcycle accident and then they were released. Therefore, we officially requested the court to question them again.”

    Interesting...

I think Greenchair should add to his timeline that Chris and Sean entered the bar at 04.00. Which bar? AC?

    And were was David?

Now what about the injuries? Could there have been some fighting before David was fatally attacked? Were some of his injuries from an earlier fight? And were Chris and Sean there too (or one of them)? OK, Chris claimed later that his injuries were "old wounds" and after a doctor confirmed that he was released. A doctor from Koh Tao?

Only more room for speculations - and for now I agree: speculations, that's what it is......

  14. Solid evidence of Nomsod in Bangkok:

    Witness statements: Where? Who, Source?

University Staff statements: Where, who, source?

    Student statements: Where, who, source?

    University records: Source?

Investigators confirmation looking into this: The RTP investigating! that's a first, show me the source for that please.

Stating there's solid evidence is not enough in the real world without backing up your claims

Four hospitals have now confirmed that the DNA samples taken Thursday from Warot Tuwichian do not match those taken from the Koh Tao murder scene ... "Mr Warot is not a suspect in the case but he has cooperated with us well. As far as the police are concerned, he was cleared long ago. We only did this [DNA tests] to comply with his wish to prove his innocence to the public....... http://bit.ly/1DNvcDB and BK Post

He was cleared long before offering his DNA because there was solid proof he was not on the island but somehow you will only believe speculation and disregard all things official unless you have specifics to an investigation that you are not part of and certainly have no business knowing about personal information about those not involved and there should be no reason to believe even slightly they were involved.

But really up to you if you want to stray into fantasy about a case that is pretty cut and dry with two defendants about to stand trial whose DNA was found in the victims and just from what we know there are witnesses and physical evidence tying them to the crime as well as UK Investigators, who have examined the case and evidence first hand and questioned Thai Police, who have indicated to the families the evidence is strong and credible and that there is more we don't even know about.

Hundreds of suspects ruled out, numerous leads and accusations from Police which didn't pan out and their ability to admit such-- never a fear of publicly accusing the headman's son and after weeks they found the right guys from the limited number of people on the island.

This really is what appears to be a very straight forward case and close to an open and shut one beyond the nonsense conspiracy theories that keep getting knocked down only to resurface by those desperate to feed their need for conspiracies and distrust of Thai authorities despite any rational reason to believe anyone else committed these crimes and any motivation to cover up for a person who did or any reason to believe the DNA does match except of an incident years ago which a person claimed non-uniformed cops kidnapped him and tried to get his sperm but failed then let him go on his merry way.

Regardless of the truth of the past incident -- ALL countries have histories of corrupt police and planting of evidence. Yes it should make people reasonable question police (one reason for trials) but the key is "reasonably" question and not go off into fantasy land. There is NOTHING in this case to suggest the DNA was planted or manipulated in a way to match the two defendants in fact there are a vast number of reason to make this theory completely implausible.

Things may have been handled sloppy in some respects and police may have went to far in getting a confession but nothing to indicate they don't have the right people in custody and A LOT that indicates they do.

    Dislike.

    +1 despicable

    +1 disgusting

  15. Went to Jomtien 22nd December for 90 day report, passport only.

The guy checked the computer, printed off the tearoff and I was out again in 2 minutes.

Same for me: in and out in 2 minutes.

BUT: I live half way between Khonkaen and Udon Thai ( I can see the highway from my balcony), but just inside the border of Kalasin province. That means I have to go Sakon Nakon and that means a 180 km drive...and a 180 km drive back. I asked if it was possible to do it by mail and the answer was: "no, you have to come in person". Maybe they like me.....
