  1. I just left the Thai Consulate in Singapore. I happened to be here on another matter and decided to get my Non Immigrant Type 'O' Visa here. I am married to a Thai national. I was asked for a copy of the marriage certificate as well as my bank book updated within a few days showing a balance of at least 400,000 baht. Since my balance was NOT at that level I was granted a 90 day only. Everyone was courteous and it was fairly straightforward, but they ARE sticklers for the rules here.

  2. Penang, Malaysia: Non immigrant 'O' 1 year Multiple Entry = Success!

Absolutely no extra work involved whatsover, just a little more money required. (Your Thai bank book has to show a bit of something)

Travel: Fly Nok Air; Phuket - Hat Yai RT = 2100Baht; Minibus: Hat Yai - Penang RT = 500Baht (Firefly Air direct nonstop Phuket - Penang RT = 4,830 Baht)

Accomodations: Hong Ping Hotel 2 nights = 1380Baht (I stayed in Hat Yai a couple of extra days just for fun; Sakura Grandview 890Baht/night)

Food: Indonesian Ristaffel set = 150 Baht, Hainan Chicken Rice = 50 Baht, Tandoori chicken = 55 Baht, Biryani 50 Baht, Khoo Clan Dim Sum set 80 Baht! Malay "Kopi white" (coffee w/sweet milk) 10 Baht!

    Visa complete: Non 'O' M 1yr: 5,500 Baht (+ agent fee 200Baht)...

The freedom and peace of mind this visa provides every single day? : PRICELESS!

Parvez Bookstore, Chulia St. Penang, does it again!

    :o

Anyone done this lately? I'm looking to go soon.

  3. Went to the aquarium the other day. Expensive, but very nice. Wife, 5 yr old stepdaughter and I went on Sunday morning around 9:30 and it was not crowded and very pleasant. Definitely fully stocked and all animals/fish active except the otters who were still sacked out.

Food court on 1st floor definitely at least a cut above other food courts and only a little pricier....

  4. Interesting thing about the "Tee Sut Isaan Inter" restaurant is that it was reviewed in the Bangkok Post who proclaimed it as having the best hamburgers in all of Bangkok - quite an unusual accolade for an Isaan restaurant! :o

Chef Yim is an impressively trained chef, I forget all her credentials. Besides hamburgers, there are quite a few very good 'farang' items on the menu. Her husband is American and hangs around 'looking after' the bar and schmoozing the customers. While it's not cheap like street food, it's not all that expensive... :D

  5. There are definitely internet cafes. Just ask at the front desk of your hotel or guest house. There is at least one with wifi for your laptop. Most large hotels and even many guesthouses have internet access. Can't vouch for the "high speed" part. If you don't have a place to stay yet check out:

    http://www.peaceofangkor.com/index.html

The people who run it are good, reliable and friendly people and they DO have internet available.

  6. If you give her a $2000 engagement ring she'll probably throw it at you. Ought to be able to buy a decent stone around one carat for $8000-$10000 USD.

Oh please!!! That's ridiculous. Are we talking about marrying a Princess? A cabinet minister's daughter? A high ranking general's first born daughter??? $8-10,000 USD for an engagement ring???? What are you thinking?????

  7. Incidentally, if you marry your lady, you will become part of her family just as you would in your own country. You don't seem to know much about their customs and etiquettes and, if not, this would be a good time to start to learn more.

    Best Wishes for the future.

One good reference is Thailand Fever, a very good introduction to Thai girl/Farang man relationships. I also recommend the stickman site:

    http://www.stickmanbangkok.com/living.html

There is a ton of great info concentrated in one place on his site.

As to the atheism, everyone is right, it isn't about you. If you want to have any chance of happiness and harmony in the future, for one day let it go. It WILL be a buddhist ceremony. If that level of compromise for you isn't possible, living in Thailand is gonna be tough sledding.... :o

As to sinsod (sin sot) there are NO strict rules. I've heard of everything from $1,000 US to $50,000 US. More often than not it is returned for use by your bride and you for future stuff like buying land in her village or building a house.....

  8. The best International school for your kids in Bangkok is ISB but u must to pay 400-500k per years and locate in Nonburi area. For the oldest international school in Bangkok has branch in Bangkapi-Romklow area(10 min from the new airport and 45 min far from chonburi)

Many choices for you but the 1st thing should to look at the safety place for your kids and close to their school because we are adult we can ride o car and know how go easily.

    I

If you are looking at ISB, there is typically a waiting list, so get on the list as soon as possible. ISB is very international and teaches in the American model. The area nearby is a totally safe and insulated moo baan (neighborhood) called Nichada Thani. Between the school and Chaeng Wattana highway is another safe but mixed neighborhood. On expat package, either should be affordable. As to chauffeur and maid, check with co-workers or other expats that live near you.

The biggest downside/upside to that area is that it is not very close to the city. By taxi including tools about 260 baht one way...

  9. You actually overlooked 3 things on the visa form used in US.

    Requirement for supporting documentation.

    Purpose of visit.

Reference person in USA or Thailand.

I can only assume when you described yourself in earlier post you forgot to mention the extra dark shades you were wearing.

Reference person in the USA sounds familiar, most likely I had to list someone in USA, but was NOT required to list a guarantor in Thailand. And extra dark shades for sure to go with shorts and tee. My short term memory must be shot but I don't remember the supporting documentation part...

  10. Morbius, Andym528

    Idle curiousity.

If you HAD been asked your reason for visit, what would you have given?

I'm sure in Andy's case, he would have written in:

"To be gainfully employed, but only after obtaining all the legal and proper work permits."

    :o

    Take A Deep Breath....

The traffic, yeah... made the stupid mistake of going to On Nut Tesco Lotus Friday after work.

    :D

Ha Ha!!! You're darn good, sriracha john!!! :D

actually i probably would have said researching a book i am writing! or coming over to decide if i want to retire here...

I don't remember the sponsor/guarantor fields nor the reason for visit field....

  11. I had acupuncture treatment yesterday at Bumrungrad. So far I am very pleased with the result although it was a bit on the expensive side for Thailand. The woman was very competent and took her time to find out what my problem was. I got some meds (celebrex and a muscle relaxant) to augment the acupuncture. The whole thing was 1500 baht - about $35 American. No doubt you can find it cheaper and if anyone has any great recs for this not too far from Thong Lo, I'd love to hear them.

I had no personal recommendations about other acupuncture therapists and without a personal rec, I always go to Bumrungrad for any health related stuff. You pay more there, but every time I have been there, I've been taken care of competently and politely. Even going to Bumrungrad, it's still drastically cheaper than health care in the USA.....
