  1. I think this thread should have been called " Cost of Living in Bangkok"..

There is much more to Thailand than just bangkok and most is far less expensive.

I am amazed at what some of you pay to rent an apartment there, and, not loving the city lifestyle, need to ask myself why you do it.

    For an example:

My family and I live in a house on about one acre of land. ( see attached photo )

The house was brand new when we moved in two years ago.

It is in a quite area, but only about 3 minutes away from "the big city".

    We love it.

    The rent?

    3,500 THB / Month

I know we all have different needs and wants.

The life my family enjoys is far less expensive than " The Big Mango".

Thats a nice house actually, we built something similar about 7 years ago but with normal type slate roof. Land was my wifes and the house and everything with it cost about 2m

  2. Being a bit of a Lothario and generous hansom man, I always buy the Missus a bottle of duty free perfume when going home on leave, that's about it other than her Birthday when I buy her a Bottle of Duty Free perfume. Call me a fool if you like , but shes worth it

  3. Anyone read this article , look like the Nam are fighting for Thailand's Western Market

BANGKOK, Thailand (eTN) - At the recent Mekong Tourism Forum in Danang, Vietnam National Administration Chairman Nguyen Van Tuan confirmed that the government will finally allow new countries to be exempted of visa formalities. The five countries benefiting from the new measure are France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK. “The new regulation is due to be activated from July 1 normally,” indicated the VNAT Chairman. Belarus will also be exempted from a visa although it will have little effect to lift arrivals on a global scale.

Among the five countries which will benefit of the exemption, France, Germany, and the UK are among the top incoming markets for Vietnam. All together, they generated last year a total of 635,489 arrivals, a market share of 8% of all arrivals into the country. Among European countries, France remains the strongest with total arrivals reaching 214,000 tourists last year followed by the UK with 202,000 arrivals and Germany with 142,000. France and the UK have, however, seen total arrivals declining by 6% during the first five months of 2015, while Germany was progressing moderately by 0.6%. The exemption of a visa could easily help those countries growing their total arrivals by an additional 250,000 to 400,000 visitors during the next 3 years.

The measure will be accompanied by a promotional campaign from VNAT with media and travel agent fam trips being organized. “This is a first step, and we hope that more countries will follow. Australia, the USA, or Canada for example could be in the medium term benefit from a similar measure,” added Nguyen Van Tuan. In total, 23 countries will now be exempted from the visa.

Vietnam has been confronted since the beginning of this year by a dramatic drop in total arrivals. For the first 5 months of this year, total arrivals are down by 12.6% with almost all countries affected. Of a total of 30 top foreign markets, only 7 show a growth so far this year. Declines are particularly dramatic from China, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, all down by around 30%. China total arrivals for example stand at only 164,000 compared to 700,000 for the first 5 months of 2014. Russia is also down by 25% from a total of 146,000 arrivals from January to May 2014 compared to 22,000 from January to May 2015.

  4. Parliamentarians from ASEAN member states, including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Myanmar expressed serious concern after a meeting on irregular migration in Southeast Asia failed to address in any meaningful way the root causes of the region’s migrant crisis.

Lawmakers from ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) said May 29 they were dismayed and disappointed that representatives from ASEAN member states failed to publicly discuss the persecution of the Rohingya, “shamefully bowing to pressures from a military government directly responsible for some of the most shocking and heinous policies of persecution in the world today.”

-“It’s just another case of ASEAN doing as ASEAN does: lots of talk with little genuine substance or resolve to take any action whatsoever on the root causes of this crisis,” said Charles Santiago, chairperson of APHR and Malaysian Member of Parliament. -

  5. what a bunch of shit! Complicating matters for no good reason.

my uk style long birth cert states both my parents were not born in the uk.

I called the passport advice line and the person I spoke to didn't have a clue what to tell me in the case of me not being able to provide my parents birth certs.

I guess I will just have to attach a cover letter stating I don't have copies of my rents birth certs but will attach copies of their marriage cert and british passports. Hopefully this will be enough.

The people you spoke to are customer service , they have no idea or access to you application , nice people but clueless. If you have your British birth cert you would also fill in a section on application, You wont need them if you are British by birth(Born in UK )you should not have a problem with this issue.

If your son was born in Thailand then he is British by descent , if you were British by Birth (Born in UK yourself) British by descent only passes one Generation

You may be lucky enough to be sent a Domicile form to fill in

I just spent six months squabbling with the tossers because even thou I have Sole custody of my Son they still insisted on my Ex wifes Birth certificate who I have not seen or heard of for 12 years

  8. I think if they improved things for Thais they would improve for us. Starting with Laws that are enforced properly

Law enforcement and nothing else would raise the quality of life for everyone, not just foreigners.

Where do you all stand on enforcing laws against prostitution? whistling.gif

They should enforce the laws that they have , Just shows how much this is a lawless country by the blatant nature of the Go Go and girly bars, But it is the same with most laws here

  9. I think if they improved things for Thais they would improve for us. Starting with Laws that are enforced properly

Yes, any government's priorities should be aimed at their own people first. Despite what the perpetual whiners go on about. life here for farang is already far more comfortable than it is for a lot of nationals. And most of those farang who seem so miserable here would probably be worse off if they stayed in the countries from which they fled.

No farang government spends a great deal of time worrying about accommodating foreigners. If anything their interest in foreigners is concerned with keeping them out unless they're bringing money and/or needed skills.

Maybe if farang governments worked on improving life back in Farang Utopia there wouldn't be so many unemployable, unqualified, economic refugees here.

    Well you wrong...

In my country once foreigners are allowed in then over some years time they end up with the exact same rules and benefits as i have...

Some examples, insurance, passports, landowning, education, justice.social security all no difference.

Example a Thai lady would marry a guy from my country then she gets all these benefits just as if she was born in my country. Now that is not the same here if i marry a thai girl then still my rights are completely limited here in thailand..

So the difference is the behavior of governments in dealing with foreigners.

Not all governments are unfair/unfriendly towards foreigners like here in Thailand is the practice.

But what you need to remember is they don't want us here as residents . They want tourists with loads of dough and if you happen to marry one their women then you stay under their terms. Not so easy to take your Thai wife and family to live in the UK anymore , or Australia.. Also you have to look why people want to liver here , Cheap , weather , unfussy women, beaches ect. If they were too generous with the visa regs the country would be full of the beads and sandals brigade

  10. The government should organize a basic health insurance program that foreigners can buy into that would cover preexisting conditions and require all resident foreigners to buy this basic program. Luxury private plans could be optional.

i would assume that the money they would be prepared to spend would have you paying most of the fees yourself unless you fancied a public hospital. Also can you imagine giving a "Fund" of any size to the Thai government or even a Thai company

If outside temperature is 35 C or something and possibly your outside unit is even in the shade, it is a no go to demand 22-23 C cooling. Why would one anyways?

Most aircons can only cool down as much as 9 degrees down from the outside temperature.

If an aircon is working properly the air gets dried and you will already feel comfortable at temps 27-28 C.

If your inside unit starts building ice then you probably have a gas/pressure problem and the unit will not cool the room enough.

    Go see the technician.

Thats about what we have it on 27-28 ish , Before the real hot weather came used to put it on 22-23 , But when we had it cleaned out and serviced 22-23 was absolutely freezing , which impressed the missus she's "Now" at the best of times

  12. Maybe 1 m gauge for the Local train from Den Chai and the hop on the Standard gauge to BKK at chang Mai

Its all conjecture though isn't it. Whether they go into partnership with 3 different countries or not it is a huge program they are talking about and I don't think they have anything , other than a couple of MOUs,in black and white

Yet this section was one of the last planned-to-be-doubled, under the (currently underway) SRT track-doubling plans, so why study it now ?

Even Yingluck's plan for a high-speed passenger-only network had wisely left it until last, when she hoped some private-enterprise group might step forwards, to build the more-difficult section North from Phitsanulok through the hills & mountains !

Perhaps "About Bt117 million has been set aside for the study and design of the one-metre gauge railway" gives a clue ? alt=whistling.gif>

The reason for the study is they have 3 choices for improving this section of the line between Bangkok and Chiang Mai

    1) lay a second track beside the existing 1 meter track - cheapest but slowest

    2) Spend more money and re-align some sections to make straighter and with broader curves - faster trains, shorter distance, but increase in cost

    3) Spend a lot more money straightening the track - probably more tunnels and bigger cuttings to make as straight as feasible, hence shortest distance and fastest trains, and most expensive.

They may have also be looking at later on building a track from Den Chai to Chiang Rai

So for the first option , hence the 90kph. They must renew at least the formation you would think and install new Track on existing line while building new adjacent track nearly all built in existing ROW,.

I have no idea how busy that line is but option 1 seems adequate for a "Local line". Problems with 2 and 3 obviously would be Land acquisition as the big unknown and time and expense. I suppose it all depends what the envisage for future usage.

  14. <script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script>

I think that when you strip away the poor translations, what this is talking about is rebuilding the existing Northern line to Chiang Mai, doubling the track and realigning some curves to allow higher speeds and increase the capacity of the route.

Incidentally, whilst it is a joy to follow the developing relationship between ExPratt and NongKhaiKid, I trust we will be spared the details of any subsequent consummation?

I'm I stepping on your toes Jag,sounds like the old green eyed monster is out and about, ;o)
