  1. 2015 Golf Festival Tees-Off In Style

    2015-Golf-Festival-Tees-Off-In-Style.jpg

HUA HIN:- Play is underway in the 2015 Hua Hin and Cha-Am Golf Festival after a colourful opening ceremony heralding the first weekly competition day at the Majestic Creek Country Club on 2nd August.

The opening ceremony featured Thai dancing and music with golf clubs being the dancers’ chosen accessory. In attendance was the Phetchaburi Governor, Khun Montien Thongnit (he’s a golfer!), with the Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khirikhan Golf Course Association Chairman Khun Suwit Reanrogruang and Board Members. The Tourism Authority of Thailand was represented by the local and regional Directors. Many more VIPs, including media stars, joined the full field of golfers ready to tee-off. TAT Governor Thawatchai Arunyik said, “The Hua Hin/Cha-am Golf Festival has been held successfully for several years now to promote golf and other sports that tourists can enjoy in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan.
As the event has become better known by sportsmen and women internationally, it has become much anticipated by local businesses, which enjoy a boost of visitors during what has traditionally been the province’s low season.” However very few non-Thai golfers were in attendance; with the exception of local golf tour operators and management staff from the golf courses involved. Marketing of this important event outside of the country may still need to be in need of development to achieve the Festival’s promotional aims. During the festival, the 10 participating golf courses are offering special promotions at 1,000 Baht and 1,800 Baht per person per round. The prices will vary from course to course. 2. Kiteboarding in Hua Hin Enjoy Life On A Windy Beach

    Kiteboarding-in-Hua-Hin.jpg

HUA HIN:- “Kiteboarding is like waterskiing behind a silent, clean, self-controlled helicopter.” This is a blog on a kiteboarding forum from someone trying to explain what this sport is all about. Perhaps an even more heartfelt comment was ……………… “If you consider the wind as sacred, treating it with reverence while others consider your enthusiasm to be fanatical and extreme – then you’re a kiteboarder!”

Kiteboarding is a surface water sport combining aspects of wakeboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, and gymnastics into one extreme sport. A kiteboarder harnesses the power of the wind with a large controllable power kite to be propelled across the water on a kiteboard similar to a wakeboard or a small surfboard. Like surfing, kiteboarding is a sport primarily enjoyed by individuals who don’t usually need competition or organised events.
For them this is about self-expression on the water and the satisfaction of joining with the elements in an environmentally way. The first kite school in Thailand was established in Hua Hin back in 2001. Since then Kiteboard Asia (KBA) has opened many schools in Thailand and Vietnam. With almost 15 years’ experience, there isn’t much they haven’t learned so much about kiteboarding, teaching, and how to run the best kitesurfing services. This is by far the largest kiteboarding school and shop network in Asia. The head office remains in Hua Hin with three separate operations on controlled sections of local beaches and a shared central distribution point for all the latest equipment and clothing.
The proud boast is that kiteboarding gear is available in Hua Hin at the lowest prices worldwide. We caught up with Jerry, the local Manager of almost 4 years, who explained some of the finer points about how anyone (“7 – 70 years”) can join this colourful Hua Hin ocean scene. The age and gender of the kiteboarder is not really relevant as this is not a sport dependent on strength. The only really requirement is that kiteboarders must ‘graduate’ as someone who especially understands the safety requirements; a bit like a SCUBA diving certification. Jerry explained that local conditions couldn’t be better for beginners with lessons are the mainstay of KBA operations for newcomers progressing towards becoming a real kiteboarder year-round.
Bookings for lessons (private, 1 day discovery and 3 day) are often made online, with free local transportation available. There is also a local club with equipment storage and ‘on the beach’ assistance available. A wide sandy beach, with shallow water and reliable wind conditions provides the best conditions for learning. The best conditions are from November to May, happily coinciding with the tourism high season.
There have even been world championship kiteboarding competitions here going back to 2010. All nationalities are represented with a combination of rentals, sales and kiteboarder’s own equipment being used. There have been over 10,000 students over the years, including many who have gone on to make successful careers and continuing to embrace the sport. Internationally the future is definitely looking bright for kiteboarding.
There are pro tours, speed and course racing world championships. Kite gear is evolving at an incredible pace, with kites and bar systems becoming safer and more efficient. Kite schools with qualified instructors can be found all around the world, and more youngsters and girls are getting into kiteboarding.
Kiteboarding almost became an Olympic sport for the 2016 Olympic Games. But Hua Hin is the place to start your involvement and to experience the thrills of wind-powered locomotion and salt spray on the ocean in Hua Hin. Where? The three bases for KBA can be found at Sois 71, 75/1 and 83/1. It’s just a matter of heading down any of these Sois to make the connection. 3. Hua Hin International School Now a Part of the Black Mountain Community

    Hua-Hin-International-School.jpg

HUA HIN:- To check out the significant new player on the Hua Hin education scene, Hua Hin Today has taken the opportunity to visit the Hua Hin International School (HHIS) twice in August. First to meet the Headteacher, “Miss Julie” at temporary office premises, but then on 22nd August we were able to have a look at the ‘real thing’ during an open day to introduce parents and students to the school two days before classes commenced. The open day was not an ‘official opening’, that’s still to come. This was an opportunity for parents and students to get the ‘feel’ of the school, meet teachers and for kids to receive their very first school uniforms; a BIG day for them! Many of us can remember the early days of school with impressions that may last a lifetime. I still cringe when I hear ‘Brahms’ Lullaby’, which was the signal that an afternoon nap was due.
At the HHIS open day there was no signs of any cringing. The atmosphere was calm, very welcoming teachers and other staff exuded confidence which quickly transferred to the visitors with the kids clearly looking forward to their first day at school on Monday. The HHIS is a modern school in every way. Open wide spaces between class rooms, comfortable relaxing classrooms as well as recreational facilities and dining areas are a feature.
There’s also a sense of being part of the Black Mountain community with the school adding to the appeal of the surrounds, no longer just a housing estate but a real family home. Black Mountain General Manager Harald Elisson, two year old daughter in hand, was one of the visitors showing his appreciation of the new player on the BM scene. There will be more to come over the next few years with an additional high school building destined to adjoin the current early and primary year’s facilities. Managing Director Graham Sullivan proudly showed us around the site of around 19 Rai which links the Black Mountain Water Park to the Black Mountain Par Three golf course.
The school is not boxed into an enclosed ‘city-scape’ but amongst an open green environment providing ‘room to move’. There are still many opportunities for parents of prospective students to meet with school staff, including Headteacher Julie Wood. Apart from private meetings being welcomed, on 29th September ‘Miss Julie’ will be available at 8.30 am for informal meetings. There is also a further invitation to meet teachers and to discuss the progress and wellbeing of children after school on 14th and 15th October.

  4. The Pollution Control Department Rates Ao Manao as Five Star

    Ao-Manao-as-Five-Star%2B%25281%2529.jpg

HUA HIN:- The Director General of the Pollution Control Department (PCD) Mr. Wijarn Simachaya has announced that the 5th Aviation Division of Prachuab Khirikhan has proposed Ao Manao, the bay under its supervision, for an evaluation of tourist beach environment. An evaluation in 2002 gave as 4 stars, equivalent to a good condition; this year, the 5th Aviation Division improved the environmental quality and condition of Ao Manao until it reached 5-star class, equivalent to very good.
According to Mr. Wijarn, committee members on beach environment quality control have visited Ao Manao to monitor and certify the environmental condition. After the inspection, they declared that the quality of the beach in Ao Manao was as good as that of Laem Sala in Prachuab Khirikhan, Ao Kha of Wua Ta Lab Island and Sam Sao in Surat Thani, Thai Mueng and Ao Keuk of Similan Archipelago, Mai Ngam of Surin Archipelago in Pang Nga, Laem Tanod of Lanta Island, Ko Rok and Bileh of Hong Island in Krabi and Li Dee in Satul.
A 5-star beach should be the one with perfect natural resources, no pollutions as well as appropriate environmental and tourism management. If any local administrators would like to nominate their beach for such evaluation, they can do so by contacting the Bureau of Water Quality Management’s Marine Unit of PCD at tel. 02 298 2215-7.

  5. The Thailand Golf Travel Mart has been a landmark golfing event

    The-Thailand-Golf-Travel-Mart-has-been-a

HUA HIN:- The Thailand Golf Travel Mart has been a landmark golfing event which took place ‘off course’ in August at the Dusit Thani Hua Hin. This was a major showcase of what Thailand golf has to offer travelling golfers from all over the globe.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in cooperation with the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) hosted golf tour operators and buyers from key markets worldwide to connect with suppliers from all of Thailand’s golf destinations. The Petchaburi and Prachuap Khirikhan Golf Course Association was another main participant to ensure that local golf courses were high on shopping lists.
Apart from representatives of Thailand golf courses, the buyers came from 29 countries from Europe, Asia and Australia with 146 individual businesses; from Belgium to Bulgaria, from the Netherlands to Norway and from Sri Lanka to Sweden. The Chinese contingency alone consisted of 39 separate business operators. The TAT was well represented with staff representing Thailand tourism from 27 countries worldwide attending as well as local and regional management.
The Event included pre-scheduled appointments with buyers and ‘speed-dating sessions’ where suppliers met buyers without pre-scheduled meeting arrangements. Apart from the serious business, delegates enjoyed a social scene with all the trimmings and a round of golf at Royal Springfield. The IAGTO (International Association of Golf Tour Operators) is the global trade organisation for the golf tourism industry. Established in 1997, IAGTO’s membership comprises 2400 accredited golf tour operators, golf resorts, hotels, golf courses, receptive operators, airlines, tourist boards, approved media and business partners in 98 countries including, at its core, 589 specialist golf tour operators in 61 countries.
It is estimated that IAGTO’s operators control over 85% of golf holiday packages sold worldwide. “We strive to provide information, create opportunities and make introductions that will help you develop your business faster, with less effort and less cost. Our staff around the world are constantly developing new services for our members to take advantage of. We pride ourselves on being at the heart of the golf tourism industry and invite you to join us.” says Peter Walton, Chief Executive, IAGTO.
The 5th Asia Golf Tourism Convention (AGTC) will take place in Chiang Mai from 24-27 April 2016. The AGTC is a premier golf travel event in the Asia Pacific region. It is likely to attract a record number of golf tour operators from around the world, along with golf travel suppliers from every golf destination in the Asia Pacific.

  10. Prowling around Pranburi in the new Mitsubishi Triton

    Prowlin-Around-Pranburi-300x186.jpg
Pranburi is rapidly developing into Hua Hin’s favourite weekend or day trip escape. Just as Bangkok residents enjoy a weekend away from the ‘Big Mango’, for Hua Hin or Cha-Am, ocean-side Pranburi offers Hua Hin locals an escape from daily routine.
Our ‘prowl’ was in a brand new Mitsubishi Triton Double Cab 4 X 4 (Sterling Silver); a test vehicle provided by Pranburi Premier Supply Co.,Ltd. ( Hua Hin branch) The Triton is clearly a very versatile vehicle. Some may use it as a workhorse and way to transport their goods or equipment in the cargo bed (around 1.5 x 1.5 metres). Others may take advantage of the 4 X 4 drive to negotiate off road conditions or as family-oriented transport with a four door cabin.
For us it was a ‘tourer’; a hasslefree way to take in the sights in comfort and style. The focus of our ‘Pranburi prowl’ was the seven kilometre strip commencing at the southern side of the Pranburi estuary and finishing at Wat Pak Klong Pran. It’s easy to find the Pranburi River entrance just a few kilometres oceanside of the town from Petchakasem Road.
The river entrance is a squid processing centre with multiple drying racks which are a little ‘on the nose’. Far enough away are probably the most authentic seafood restaurants you will find anywhere in Thailand. From the ‘squid centre’ the ocean frontage heads south along a brand new road and is protected by a breakwater which has resolved any erosion issues. Cycling along this strip is a popular and easy way for visitors at the many resorts and hotels to get around. Some of the ‘big boys’ (Evason and Sheraton), have been here for some time and there are also more boutique style options if you are planning to stay.
This could be the perfect unplanned romantic getaway where you can find your preferred style of accommodation for a spur of the moment weekend away. We called into the Ley Café for an excellent cappuccino half way along the strip. They also have an onsite bed and breakfast (the Foresta Resort) in a shady garden setting if the ‘unfussy’ style is your thing. At the end of the strip you’ll find some cliffs and caves sheltering a sandy beach at Khao Kowlok and the Thaao Ko Sa Forest Park. This is a great place for kids to safely explore and just have fun. Finally the glittering Wat Pak Klong Pran marks the completion of this cruise. Any further and you’ll arrive at the next location, Dolphin Bay, but that’s another story.
    ABOUT THE NEW MITSUBISHI TRITON
The fifth-generation Mitsubishi Triton is produced at the Laem Chabang Factory of Mitsubishi Motors Thailand Co. and rolled-out in more than 150 countries. It’s always more relaxing to take a day trip when the vehicle you are driving is carefree, easy to drive and comfortable. Our Triton offered much more than we needed for our very simple cruise.
The word ‘nimble’ kept coming to mind. I’ve never been a fan of the large, high riding vehicles. In days gone past they were awkward, clumsy and not a lot of fun to drive. To say they were nimble would be far from the truth. Things have changed; I was surprised how responsive, lively and agile the Triton proved to be.
The only real adaptation I needed to make from my sedan was the extra step up (and down) to be seated. Apart from enjoying the higher driver position, there is no need to adopt a different driving style. It may be dubbed the “Ultimate Sport Utility Truck,” but it doesn’t feel like you’re driving a truck! Apart from nimble, this classy vehicle is both simple and versatile. Our thanks to General Manager Khun Amon Sehaphol and Customer Relations Manager Khun Pannapa Bunchuay for the opportunity to take their Triton on our ‘Pranburi prowl’. Also thanks for showing us where the CD player is stored. Someone else suggested that expecting such an outdated music machine in such a modern vehicle was a bit far-fetched – not true!
Cost: From THB 791,000 and the Double Cab 4×4 (our vehicle) THB 1,008,800.
    Engine:
    – 2.4-litre MIVEC VG Turbo Diesel (4N15)
    – 181hp @ 3,500rpm
    – 430Nm of torque @ 2,500rpm
    – 200 MPa high-pressure common rail injection system
    – 20% improved fuel-efficiency (vs. previous 2.5-litre turbo diesel)
    – 17% CO2 emissions reduced (vs. previous 2.5-litre turbo diesel)
The key highlight of the new engine is the use of an aluminium alloy block – especially so in a high-compression (15:5:1) diesel engine. The alloy block sees a gross weight reduction of 35kg, and Mitsubishi tells us that the material’s toughness, durability and heat resistance is what contributes most to its improved fuel consumption.
Features & Equipment: The all-new Triton employs a true Keyless Operation System with Engine PushStart button, meaning that you never have to remove the key fob from your pockets or bags. Also offered for the higher-spec Tritons is the Mitsubishi Multi Entertainment System (MMES). The system features an in-car navigation system (SD card compatible), a CD/ DVD player, other infotainment facilities, and a guided display of the rear-view camera.

  11. Coming This Year – The Khaoyou Ville

    Coming-This-Year-The-Khaoyou-Ville.jpg

A young businessman has invested 34 million Baht to transform land of over 5 Rai of land in Khao Yoi district into a large community shopping mall.

Mr. Wissanu Neungrit, 36, a native of the Khao Yoi district in Phetchaburi said that the community shopping mall is now being built. Entitled Khaoyou Ville, the mall will have spacious areas selling products and goods as well as a cinema, a supermarket and banks.
“While the shopping mall is being constructed, I’m speaking with the executives of the convenient store 7-11, Siam Commercial Bank, AIS, True Move, some drugstores, some dentists and the Amazon Coffee House to ask them to open their shops here. All of their shops will be located in the front zone with a community cinema of 50 seats built by Kantana Group,” said Mr. Wissanu, adding that the first zone will be finished later this year.
Mr. Wissanu’s idea of building the shopping complex is based on the fact that Khao Yoi district lacks a community facility where people can gather together. Many are factory workers who have nothing to do on their day’s off. Khao Yoi does not have as many tourist attractions as other districts in Phetchaburi. This shopping mall will serve as a venue where people can relax and have a good time. The businessman is also thinking about including a water park in the shopping mall to attract even more visitors. The total investment will be 34 million Baht.

Together, they are more than plural: the planet’s darkest song, a tongue, a serpent muscling air apart, a dire banner come unfurled, a river flowing wholly from the old, mute mountain’s desperate heart, the last confession of the world. Conceive of each one singly, if you can.

This poem originally appeared in the December 2005 issue of Poetry Magazine, by the well-published Canadian poet, Amanda Jernigan. At fifteen years old, she spent a year in Thailand as an exchange student. We guess that a trip may have included a visit to the Nayang Bat Cave near Cha-Am where she received her inspiration and that Cha’am is ‘poetic licence’ for Cha-Am. ‘Billowing’ is a very apt description of the appearance each sunset of probably millions of fruit bats that flow out from the mountainside in what appears to be a rather sudden cloud of smoke streaming into the skies.

Having said millions, some people only say hundreds of thousands, but others estimate 10 million in the swarms above, there’s no one counting! Nayang Bat Cave is something short of 10 kilometres north of Cha-Am, not really that easy to find, but if you head inland about 5 kilometres along the scenic route before reaching Puktien Beach the locals will steer you towards a very large outcrop with a distinctive cave in the face.

The nearby viewpoint by the roadside is likely to have a few visitors. It’s really just a platform on the roof of a building which has a perpetual ‘for sale’ sign and the owner may want 20 thb for the privilege. Around 6.30 pm you’ll notice an increase overhead of small flying creatures before the masses emerge from the hillside. Annoyingly though it’s just starting to get dark, so best to choose a cloudless sky for a clear background if photography is on your mind. After 10 or 15 minutes of the steady stream flooding from the hillside to find their nightly succor it’s all over, apparently returning at first light.

This is not a unique scene in Thailand, but many locals around Cha-Am may be oblivious to the spectacle. If you are into nature as a mass choreographed display, bats on this scale of unison takes some beating. Take a drive some evening to be a witness. You may also be inspired to poetry after the display!

  14. Where is The New Hua Hin City Football Stadium?

    Where-is-The-New-Hua-Hin-City-Football-S

HUA HIN:- The location of the new Hua Hin City Football Club stadium has been a mystery for many would-be football supporters. The team has been using grounds for both training and Divisional matches at the Thanarat Military Camp some 10 kilometres from town and this has been a major deterrent for potential supporters.
The good news is that construction of the new grounds commenced in January in a much more user friendly location. There is not much to be seen yet although the lighting towers are visible and it is beginning to look like a real sporting venue. The ‘under-construction stadium’ is easy to find. Before the Petchakasem Road flyover veer left towards Kho Takiab. The site is past the Cicada Market 1.5 kilometres further on from the flyover on the right hand side.
To date there are only official construction notices and no indication of the Club’s future presence. Completion is mooted for July with a budget of 37 million THB. Perhaps with a stadium that provides a much higher standard of facilities for the ‘White Sailboat Team’ even greater honours will be reaped by our city’s football heroes. The team is currently in Division 2 (Central West). Games are played at the home ground on alternative weeks from February until September.
Perhaps we can expect the 2016 season can ‘kick-off’ at the brand new stadium. The other expectation is that the venue will attract a much broader spectator base. In many other locations foreign fans love to replicate the atmosphere of the top European Leagues with the songs, chants and banter that appeals to the masses – coming soon? Maybe a Thai version of “Olé, Olé, Olé”?

  15. Hua Hin’s Tourism Footprint Remains Entrenched In Domestic Demand

    Hua-Hins-Tourism-Footprint-Remains-Entre

HUA HIN:- Thailand’s legacy seaside leisure destination Hua Hin is continuing to be defined by the domestic sector. Last year 72% of travelers who stayed in hotels were Thais according to a report released by hospitality consulting group C9 Hotelworks. This annualized trading pattern was up 1% in year-on-year terms with strong weekend and public holiday traffic as the main contributing factor. Performance by Hua Hin hotels as tracked by STR Global was remarkably strong in 2014 despite Bangkok’s political crisis as market-wide occupancy tallied in at 68%. Buoyed by a rising tide of investment into the tourism industry, room night demand over a five -year period has grown from a base of 57% and pushed upwards with a 3% compounded annual growth rate.

“A resoundingly strong domestic market has spurred average room rate growth upward to USD130 which is a trend most evident at upscale beachfront hotels” commented C9’s Managing Director Bill Barnett. Adding “the Thailand-based Proud Group who developed the InterContinental resort, Vana Nava water park and are coinvesting in the new Bluport mall along with a Holiday Inn managed property are lead indicators of positive long term sentiment.”

There is little surprise that Mainland China was the leading growth segment in 2014 with a surge of 16% in volume. Despite the shift, Europe with its seasonal snowbird influx commanded 19% of the tourism market. Germany, Denmark and the U.K. have registered double-digit compounded growth between 2010 through 2014. On the accommodation front Thai group TCC are investing a 328-key hotel which will be managed by the Marriott chain, and is slated to open in the first quarter of 2016. C9’s Hua Hin Hotel Market Update states there are 9, 157 rooms in registered tourism establishment, which compares to just over 46,803 in Phuket and nearly 17,986 for Koh Samui.

One of the key trends noted in the report is the increasing urbanisation of the corridor between nearby Cha Am and Hua Hin. Vast land holdings by significant Thai conglomerates in the former is expected to be developed into a series of mega-projects in the decade ahead as the Bangkok metropolis evolves outwards. Despite current favorable hotel trading, Bill Barnett points out “while widespread investment is taking place in demand generators such as hotels, tourism attractions, residential real estate and upscale retail the bottleneck in transportation infrastructure poses the most serious roadblock in elevating the destination alongside it’s domestic and regional competitors.”

  20. The Sailing Club Hua Hin Welcomes the 2015 Regatta

    The-Sailing-Club-Hua-Hin-Welcomes-the-20

HUA HIN:- It seems strange that since the year 2000 there has been an Annual Sailing Regatta in Hua Hin, but no Hua Hin Sailing Club. This year things have changed!

The Sailing Club Hua Hin ‘opened its sails’ in January this year and welcomed the 2015 Hua Hin Sailing Regatta with the chance to put the Club on the national and international sailing map. The Club is the only sailing club on the West Coast of the Gulf of Thailand. This Hua Hin Regatta 2015 was held in April to honour of His Majesty King Bhumiphol Adulyadej who excelled in sailing. Over 300 competitors from across Thailand and many other Asian as well as European countries took part. The organising authority was The Yacht Racing Association of Thailand (YRAT), in conjunction with the Royal Thai Navy, Tourist Authority of Thailand, ChaAm Municipality and Phetchaburi Province. During the Regatta Royal Thai Navy ships were chaperoning the fleet off-shore and the eager helping hands of navy sailors provided the first greeting and for returning competitors.
But racing regattas are not really what the Sailing Club Hua Hin is all about. The founder Richard Vine describes the Club as “a family club where everyone can learn to sail from 8 – 80 years. But it’s about much more than just sailing, it’s a great place on the beach with cool shade, a trendy bar and a laid back atmosphere where all the family can enjoy the facilities shooting the breeze with their fellow club members.” “Our goal is to bring sailing to a wider audience in Thailand. Our club is to become a centre of excellence to help kids develop all the personal skills necessary for handling a boat.” Club Members will have preferential rates for sailing courses and also for renting the Club’s boats. Members will be able to bring and store their own boats securely. Members can participate in the regular regattas organised by the Club, be able to enjoy the cool deck, bar and restaurant as well as make use of the showers and changing facilities.
Baifearn Meeyousamsen is the Club’s Royal Yachting Association qualified Chief Instructor. Fearn is the daughter of the coach of the Thai national squad and has been in boats all her life. She is currently ranked No 2 in Thailand in Laser Radials and is a regular participant in Asian International Regattas. She brings a bubbly personality to the club and loves being around kids. She is currently completing her degree in Sports Management. Richard is an English ‘old salt’ with a wealth of sailing experience. He taught sailing for three years at Club Med in the 1970’s, discovering the pleasure of sailing in warm water.
Having lived in Hua Hin for 10 years he was surprised that there were no sail boats on the waters. As retirement loomed he bought a Laser for himself and an Optimist for his son. In the Hua Hin Regatta in 2013 he saw 130 kids from Bangkok, Pattaya and Sattahip competing in their Optimists and decided that Hua Hin needed a sailing club. Both father and son were competitive sailors in the 2015 Regatta. In 2014, Richard successfully negotiated a deal to take over a prime piece of ocean frontage land, built the necessary hospitality, storage and launching infrastructure and now manages the idyllic Club premises. This a great place to savour the ocean breezes and action or just to relax, enjoy a drink or something to eat at the ‘Eight Bells’ Bar and restaurant. (Eight bells is the signal that your sailing watch is over and you can relax.) The Sailing Club Hua Hin is an informal and very welcoming venue for visitors and Club Members alike; the sort of place you can adopt as your own and become a ‘regular’, even if you’re not sailing.

  21. Sam Roi Yod – Gateway To Thailand’s Underwater World

    Sam-Roi-Yod-Gateway-To-Thailand-300x200.

HUA HIN:- Underwater diving and learning SCUBA diving is on the agenda of many in Hua Hin, however most don’t really consider getting started until they travel much further south.
It’s true to say that water clarity off Hua Hin is not special because of the effects of sedimentary discharge from the Chao Phraya River entering the gulf then being carried by the currents south. There’s also a lack of coral reefs. However just a 40 minutes south of Hua Hin is the first real SUBA opportunity this side of Bangkok with PADI (Professional Association Of Diving Instructors) certified instruction and then the clear waters of Koh Talu (sometimes with 15 metres visibility) within easy reach.
This really is an opportunity to learn the skills of Scuba diving without a major journey away from Hua Hin or perhaps a few days holiday at one of the many accommodation options around Sam Roi Yod. Hua Hin Divers is situated at Dolphin Bay where Master Scuba Diver Trainer Steve Thompson has a purpose built pool for the initial instructions and then offers Discover Scuba Diving experiences (one day), Open Water Scuba Diver (4 days), Scuba Diver (2 days), Advanced (3 days) and Rescue. Courses are kept to small groups to ensure that each student is given plenty of time to both master skills and have an enjoyable dive experience without the usual rush at other areas of Thailand. There’s a 7.5 metre R.I.B. (rigid inflatable boat) with a 140 hp outboard on hand for open water expeditions with all the necessary safety gear. On our visit we met Johannes, a young German who had a few days to spare during a business trip to Bangkok.
He didn’t really want to travel to Pattaya or too far away from Bangkok, so after a phone call to Steve he opted for a trip to Pranburi where he was met by Steve. His first open water dive was scheduled for the day after our visit so he’s a happy man. Steve has something like 15 years’ experience as an instructor in the underwater world. He and his wife (she’s also a qualified instructor) have travelled the length and breadth of the Thailand coast and know the best of what is on offer. One of the bonuses of any course is to receive a ‘souvenir’ video, ‘Discover Scuba Diving Thailand’. This was filmed and produced by Steve via ‘Dive Club Thailand’ back in 2004 but remains as the definitive guide to dive sites around Thailand.
Steve’s a very relaxed operator with a flexible approach but he’s also a very professional and qualified instructor. When we arrived at Dolphin Bay he was explaining to his student a recommendation for a 24 hours interval after diving before his flight. That’s something I didn’t know! In the future there are plans to open shipwreck diving, around an hour’s trip in a fast boat into the gulf. H.T.M.S. Pattini, H.T.M.S. Phali, and H.T.M.S. Nongsarhai are three Royal Thai Navy battleships which were sunk as target ships during the 70’s and 80’s just waiting to be explored. The message is there’s no need to hesitate or travel too far to commence your adventures as a Scuba diver, it’s now available in our Region.

  22. Touring Cyclists in Hua Hin

    Touring-Cyclists-in-Hua-Hin-300x212.jpg

HUA HIN:- Three touring cyclists were spotted pedaling through a small back street of Hua Hin barely wide enough to accommodate the bulging side packs slung to their bikes. They were asked about their cycling experiences in Thailand and a long and enjoyable Q & A session followed with some friendly people who were happy to share their experience and knowledge.

Where are you going? What is the final destination of your trip?

We have come from Vietnam and are continuing to Singapore by way of Malaysia. Then to Indonesia and perhaps even further, Australia and New Zealand are in the plan.

What preparations did you make for coming to Thailand?

We believe you cannot plan for everything. That would not be in the spirit of bicycle touring. We enjoy spontaneity and think it is a big part of travel. But, you do need to stay ready for anything on a bicycle tour; bad weather or somebody getting sick can change your plans very quickly and you must be able to adapt to that. We all made sure that we got the two-month (60 Day) tourist visa to allow for adequate time to cycle through Thailand to the Malaysian border.

How are you finding your route?

We use paper maps mostly. These maps are quite reliable and durable for cycle touring, although they do not have very much detail for finding smaller roads. They are plastic and therefore can withstand the wear and tear associated with cycle touring. We have also used Google Maps online as a reference to get an idea of where we are and where we would like to go. It is a good resource, but you must have Internet access to be able to use it. Sometimes it has been difficult to find Internet access or the connectivity is not so good in places we have been during our trip.

What do you find easy about cycle touring in Thailand?

The Thai drivers seem very tolerant of cyclists, more so than in other Asian countries we have traveled. Many of the roads in Thailand have good quality shoulders, even though they are not specifically bicycle lanes. Also, riding in Thailand feels more like we are on holiday than the tough cycling we have experienced in other countries. Finding accommodation, food and water is very easy here in Thailand. It seems like there is a petrol station along the road every 10 kilometres with bathrooms, water, and many other things we need. Finding these basic needs while cycling in other countries can be very time consuming and frustrating.

What do you find difficult about cycle touring in Thailand?

Riding through Bangkok! Even though we rode through on a weekend day, Sunday, which we thought would be less busy; we still had nerve-wracking and tough days of cycling on the roads of Thailand’s capital.

Have any of you traveled to Thailand prior to this cycle touring trip?

We have very little experience with Thailand. Even though two have spent a very short holiday here some time ago, we all feel that we are really seeing Thailand for the first time on this cycling trip.

What advice would you give to other cyclists thinking about coming to tour in Thailand?

Don’t bring a tent and sleeping bag. You will not need it, the guesthouses can be found very easily and the price is very good. Try all of the food, it is wonderful. Don’t worry about having to carry a lot of water, you can find water in many places along the road. Always be flexible with your plans.

How does Thailand compare to other countries you have done cycle touring in?

We can give you the Pros and Cons of what we have experienced so far during this part of our trip in Thailand. We will spend a few more weeks cycling through Thailand so maybe these will change, but so far: The Pros – great food, inexpensive accommodations, good roads, and easy to find maps & route information. The Cons – cycling through Bangkok. It is not impossible, but it is not very enjoyable.

    Footnote:

Prime Minister Prayut recently promised that his government will build five more bicycle lanes in Bangkok and extend bike lanes to cover the entire capital so as to facilitate people to use bicycles for travels. In making improvement of existing bike lanes, he said the surface of roads, including drainage covers, will be smoothed for safe pedaling. For safety, all lanes will be painted in green with symbols to show they are reserved for bicycles.

  23. Hua Hin Sixes – 20 Years of Cricket At The Dusit Thani

    Hua-Hin-Sixes-20-Years-of-Cricket-At-The

HUA HIN:- The original name of the Dusit Thani was the Dusit Resort and Polo Club but that doesn’t mean the land in front of the resort was originally a polo ground. The grounds were created as a purpose made cricket ground, perhaps the first in Thailand.
These days it is also used for a variety of other sports, for example the Dusit Thani Hua Hin Football Academy, offering a wide range of football courses for children from 4 – 15 years of age. However it should not be forgotten that in 1994, the plan to convert what was a swamp area into a cricket ground was first hatched and in 1996 the first Hua Hin Sixes tournament was being played. Thanasak Karnasuta – ‘Tom’ tells the story of being drafted as the first President of the Thailand Cricket League in 1993.
He quickly found out that a first priority for the League was to have it’s own grounds. No more playing second fiddle to other sports with cancelled fixtures being a common problem. His entrepreneurial efforts secured funding from sponsors such as the Singha Corporation and then the support of the Dusit International Group Owner Khun Chanin and the Resident Manager John Gill. These days the grounds are in great shape with a brand new extended Astro Turf pitch installed this year. Tom is still the prime organiser of the Annual Hua Hin Sixes and still the President of the Thailand Cricket League and this year there were 21 teams competing with 84 games happening over 6 days concluding on 9th April.
As the regulars say – ‘No Tom No Sixes.’ However it must also be said that he only features in match statistics as the player with the all-time second highest number of ‘wides’ in an over – 9! For non-cricketers, a ‘wide’ is a ball which is bowled outside of the batters reach. That’s not a good look as the batting team scores a bonus run each time and the ball must be bowled again.
    This year the winners were:
    Veterans: Gold Coast Tigers
    Masters: Willsmere Wanderers
    Cup: Thai Thevada
Major sponsors: Tourism Authority of Thailand, Bangkok Post, Dusit Thani Hua Hin, TNF cricket products from Australia. Additional sponsors included Smirnoff, Singha Beer and the Hilton Hua Hin.

  24. The Prime Minister Wants Action on Some Hua Hin Issues

    The-Prime-Minister-Wants-Action-300x224.

HUA HIN:- The Prime Minister of Thailand General Prayuth Chan-ocha paid an official visit to Hua Hin on 27th March 2015. During his visit he monitored some local issues and talked with local sellers. Prayut was in Hua Hin for a Cabinet retreat at the Army Rehabilitation and Recreation Center at Suanson Pradipat.

    Parking In Hua Hin
The Prime Minister promised parking areas for the Hua Hin market and downtown area so that tourists can stop by and shop in town. Deputy Government Spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd said Prayut had received a complaint from vendors in Hua Hin downtown that tourists could not park their cars in the area, causing their income to sharply drop. In the past, tourists could park their cars on roadsides to shop but now they face fines by traffic police for doing so, the complaint stated. Sansern said Prayut raised the complaint during the Cabinet meeting Friday and the Prime Minister ordered the Prachuap Khiri Khan Governor to coordinate with the Hua Hin municipality to find car parks that would not affect the traffic rules.
    Hua Hin Beach Organisation
There are believed to be 118 local business owners located at beach areas. General Prayuth received complaints about how some of the business owners trespassed onto public areas and how they sold their products to tourists at unreasonable prices. He was also told that some beach sellers did not properly take care of beach tables, beach umbrellas and deckchairs. After the beach visit, the Prime Minister called for an immediate meeting with all the local business owners to discuss about how to make the Hua Hin beach better organised and how to sell food, drink and other products with reasonable prices.
He also talked about legal measures against selling at extremely high price. The business owners were also asked not to construct any building on the beach. The Prime Minister suggested that they should tidy up beach tables, beach umbrellas and deckchairs every day. On Wednesdays, they should have a break and clean the beach together. The business owners working in other people’s area without their permission were asked to move to Hua Don Beach. Ms. Jongkolani Ritthiyong, a fruit seller, representing street vendors and sellers on Hua Hin beaches, thanked him for the good measures to organise the Hua Hin beaches. She also asked him to help install permanent electricity meters and provide tap water to the sellers. The Prime Minister agreed to help them and assigned the Prachuab Khirihan Governor to take care of the issue.
    Fishermen’s Concerns
Another complaint he received was from local fishermen who complained about the rule that requires their small fishing boats of 30-ton capacity to be installed with a GPS device if the boats have a roof chamber. The fishermen claimed that most of their small fishing boats have roof chambers so that they could stay away from the blazing sun while fishing in the sea. Prayut promised to look into the complaint by seeking opinions from other agencies concerned. He also asked all fishermen to install a GPS system so that they can be easily located and found in case of an accident.
A New University & the High Speed Train
The Prime Minister also commented that the government is considering a new university in Hua Hin where self-sufficiency economy is taught to students. In terms of the high speed train, he said that it should be completed within 5 to 10 years.
