  1. Thanks for the replies.

What I mean by hard drive (and I may be wrong!) is that I'm taking the whole computer section, ie the tower with the disk drives, memory, on/off switch etc and leaving the monitor behind.

I read on the Terms and Conditions of Carriage sections on the websites of the airlines I'm using (Thai and Sri Lankan) that such things as money, jewellery, "computers", personal electronic equipment and other things may not be included in checked baggage.

Maybe it's just because they're likely to get damaged, in which case I'll risk it if other people have already done this. I just didn't want to get to the airport and be told I couldn't take it. I'm being over-cautious I suppose!

    Thanks

  2. I had planned to take my hard drive to the UK when I go as I won't have the money for a new computer.

However, I've just noticed that "computers" are prohibited in checked baggage on airlines.

Does this mean I can take it as hand luggage?

    Has anyone done this?

    Thanks

  3. I want to get a translation of our marriage certificate for my husband's visa application.

I know there are lots of translation agencies in Chiang Mai - can anyone recommend any of them? Does the translation need to be 'certified'? If so, who does this and does it cost extra?

    Thanks for any advice

  4. Hi,

Moving back to UK next year and wondering what to take and what to leave behind.

It's mainly toys, books, clothes and all the usual stuff you accumulate over time. Can anyone recommend a company?

Also, is it worth sending electrical items such as computer, stereo, or will I get heavily taxed on those?

    Thanks

  5. I was in your situation 18 months ago when my son was 2 years old and I wanted him to have some social interaction without having to go to 'school' five days a week. We couldn't find anywhere that would take him part time and that seemed to be not too rigidly structured.

I was beginning to despair(!) when we discovered Nandachart Preschool mentioned in a post above which had recently opened and he's been there ever since. The facilities are good quality, the environment is safe, the groups are small and we just drop him off whenever we like - usually about 3 days a week - and he's really happy to go.

It's just off the moat on a little soi between Icon Square and Jet Petrol station. Daily rate is 180 baht.

    Regards

  6. Thanks a lot for all the replies.

Went to apply for ADSL at TT&T yesterday but they told me its "full". (They said the same thing 3 months ago).

I don't know what this means and the call centre in Bangkok couldn't explain either.

We live relatively close to the city centre so I don't understand why we would have a problem joining the network. Neighbours have ADSL via TOT but I don't really want to go to the expense of changing phone companies.

Does anyone know what this means?? Are there other ways of getting ADSL without using your phone company??

    Thanks

  7. I'm thinking of upgrading from dial-up to Maxnet ADSL 256/128 Kbps.

As this is the cheapest package

    a) will I notice much difference in speed?

:o will it be fast enough to use Skype with a webcam?

Or do I need to go for a faster speed?

    Thanks for any recommendations.

  8. I know of a place on the food court floor of the airport plaza - which doesn't quite have the things I'd like - or would see in a japanese place in europe (probably also Bangkok).

Does anyone know another such place in Chiang Mai?

I can recommend Baan Bakery. It's a Japanese bakery on Suriyawong Road. Turn off the moat (the outside) at Chiang Mai gate and go down towards Kad Kom market. It's a small bakery on the corner of the first soi on the left (before the Chiang Mai gate hotel). Don't know what you're looking for but their stuff seems really good to me!

  9. Hi,

Can anyone recommend a place in or near Chiang Mai where we can celebrate our 3 year-old son's birthday?

Our house is tiny so we're looking for somewhere where the kids can have some space, fun and food (and where the grown-ups can have a good time too!).

    Thanks for any suggestions.

  10. Hi,

I've seen it at Bombay Spice which is an Indian spice stall inside Warorot Market. There were two types - one ready-to-use which cost 70bt for a 200g packet and another type which you have to mix and boil or something.

I was enquiring on behalf of a friend - I don't know anything about henna - but the stallholder said it was suitable for bodypainting.

  11. I think I've seen one at the Rimping supermarket near Narawat Bridge. As you go in the main door there are some electrical things on wooden shelves on the left and I'm pretty sure there was a bread maker last time I went. Sorry - didn't notice brand, quality or price!

  12. I'm not sure if it would make a difference, but Tops Supermarket at Airport Plaza has various types of flours from Waitrose in England. They are quite expensive, but I don't know if the quality is necessarily any better. I don't have an oven so haven't tried baking, but I do use their strong flour in my breadmaker and haven't had any problems.
