  1. Another recommendation would be Captain Yum Yum's 7 island tour. That is possibly the last highlight left in the Ao Nang area. He's a big dreadlocked Saffer who really knows the area well and his tour is very very very good and runs totally out of synch with the Thai tours so you miss all the crowds.

I've seen many tour brochures, but have never come across Captain Yum Yum. How can he be contacted?

I prefer the quietness of Krabi Town to Ao Nang even though Krabi Town is rather boring. From Krabi Town, it's simple enough to rent a motosai and drive to Ao Nang.

  2. Kriswillems and AyG- It's been a number of years since I last took Thai lessons - modules 2 and 3 at Unity. If I were to resume studying, module 4 would be the logical choice. But as AyG stated, Unity places heavy emphasis in reading and writing. That's not a bad thing, but it's not what I want. I am more interested in improving my conversational skills. Do either one of you know of a school in Bangkok that emphasizes conversations?

  3. No problem at all. Took the same 70-200 and several other lenses and FF bodies earlier this year. A 70-200 on a D7000 should be great for candid shots of the locals. You will probably want to go wide at times so take the 35/1.8. In fact, take something even wider if you can because the 35 on a crop body is not wide at all. I found the 14-24/D700 setup to be just right for indoors and 70-200/D700 for outdoors in Bagan. Bagan was awfully dusty so I would imagine off-the-beaten path locations to be equally dusty, so keep lens changes to a minimum. Enjoy.

  4. When purchasing a Nok Air ticket online, a notice appears that says, "For International credit cards payments (credit cards issued outside Thailand),the cardholder must present their credit card at the airport check-in counter for physical verification. Otherwise, Nok Air reserved the rights to deny boarding." Do they actually check? I plan on taking a different credit card and not the one I used to purchase the ticket.

  5. I'm planning on heading out to Bagan in a few months. Has anyone been there recently? Looking for photo tips... Which lenses for a ff dslr, best temples or pagodas to climb up for beautiful sunrise and sunset shots, which lens for a balloon ride, best means of transportation within Bagan, places to eat and sleep, etc...

  6. Being in a class environment really does suck when the majority are Japan and Korea, as the accents are so difficult to understand, which makes it even harder as you struggle to work it out in Thai let alone Japan or Korean Thai

It makes a BIG difference in both time and hearing, as well as trying to actually understand when you have 6/8 students trying to talk broken Thai, i actually felt i improved more when i worked out the sentences myself and then speaking with the teacher one-one

That's odd... In the few classes I took, it was always the white folks that seemed to butcher the language the most. Sounds like your best option is private tutoring.

  7. AA's website will not accept my credit card, which it has on numerous occasions in the past. I believe the problem is occurring with the "State and zip code" entry. The drop-down menu gives choices of "select state" and "n/a". After choosing the "United States" as the country, I'd expect a list of states to choose from. Anyways, I selected "select state" then typed in the zip code. What did I do wrong?
