  1. When I recently got my Non-Imm O visa based on retirement I had to submit copies of my house owners Tabien Ban and ID card. The IO was adamant that this was a new requirement. She also took great pains to inform me that when I came back to apply for my 1 year retirement extension I would need to bring those same copies again along with all the other usual documents. This was at Jomtien immigration.

  2. Well, it really depends on what your are transporting. I just posted some pics here in the other thread. Have carried all kind of other stuff like big bamboo fences or Shera sheets. Neiter would have worked with a lid.

But as you carry golf bags or supermarket purchase, your choice of a car may be wrong from the beginning smile.png.

Not necessarily. I bought a pickup for ground clearance (flooding) and robustness (can hit the odd pothole without losing the suspension), and I still can carry bags of sand, cement etc if not wardrobes or fridges.

Pretty much my reasons for buying a pick up too, that and the fact that the ranger is about 400k cheaper than the equivalent Ford Everest and has the same level of interior. Pickups are incredibly good value for money compared to an SUV
  3. So how do you transport some big stuff with the lid? It renders any pickup practically useless.

I got one of the boxes for the loading bay, 2 screws to take it off, takes no 5 mins. Less than 10k from Carryboy or Aeroklas. Best solution in my opinion.

I've managed to transport wardrobes, couches, chairs and other bulky items with the lid elevated, if I needed to transport anything taller I would undo a few bolts, unplug the electrical harness and with another person lift the lid off.

As I'm very rarely going to need to do that I don't really see it's going to be much of a problem for me.

Meanwhile the benefit of the added security and weather proofing far outweigh the disadvantages imo

  4. Got both my licences today, car and motorcycle, in at 9 o'clock and back out by 10:30. This was at the Ban Lamung office. Documents needed were:-

    2 Residence certificates

    2 Doctors Certificates

2 Copies of passport ID page and Visa page

2 Copies of UK Driving Licence front and back

I had copies of my IDP but they didn't want those and just wanted to see the original to verify my UK licence.

All in a very painless although as others have said chaotic experience lol

NOTE: Both Licences have an expiry date 2 years from now.

  5. You need to either get a licence in your country and then apply for a international Drivers Permit, or get yourself a licence here when you arrive. International Drivers Permits can only be use for 60 days on a tourist visa or 90 days on a Non Immigrant visa. Since you say you are on a tourist visa, you can get a Thai licence for 1 year (some say it's now 2 years, so it may have changed).

Remember this. no licence will mean you are responsible for any and every accident you are involved in, whether your fault or not. If you injure or kill someone, your life will be hell. If you have an accident and you injure or kill my partner or child, you will hope like hell I don't find you, you will be paying for the rest of your life thumbsup.gif Just saying, as I'm sure a lot of others on here would feel the same. In all honesty, go get your licence, 1 day and about 800 baht for both car and motorbike.

One more time, IDP's are not legally valid in Thailand.

If you have a 1949 convention IDP like I have it is indeed legally valid in Thailand since they ratified it in 1962. In the UK when applying for an IDP you get to choose which convention you want 1949 or 1968. The sensible person checks which one is valid for the country in which you wish to drive.
  6. The following is what I had to produce today in order to obtain my Non-Imm O Visa based on retirement:-

Application form TM86 to change Visa

    Passport photo

    Passport

Copies of ID page passport, Tourist Visa, 30 day extension stamp & departure card.

    House Lease agreement

Copies of the house owners Tabien Ban & ID card

Letter from Bank showing balance of + 800K

Copies of relevant pages of bank book.

    2000 Baht fee

I got turned away yesterday because I didn't have the owners Tabien Ban and ID card copies. Have to return on the 7th September for my Non-Imm O to be put in my passport.

  7. I just bought an XLT 2.2 6MT Highrider Double Cab from the main dealer in Pattaya. Came with bed liner, window tints, floor mats etc and is the new facelift model with updated front grill and projector headlamps. I've only driven it a few times but so far I'm impressed, the new 160PS engine is very quiet and pulls well, ride quality seems good enough to me over Pattaya's patchy road surfaces. The interior is high quality, far better than I would have expected in a pickup, so far it gets the thumbs up from me.

Can you let me know what color the interior is on that new model, and what is the seat material.

The interior is a mixture of grey and charcoal with aluminium accents, the headlining is a very light grey and the seat material is fords hard wearing standard material (not velour). See pictures below. And it does have Sync for lots of functions that I haven't explored yet but no DVD which I would never need anyway.

  9. This was my experience today obtaining a Residence Certificate for purchasing a motorcycle.

Arrived at 11 o'clock with application form filled out along with 2 photos, copies of passport ID pages, visa and entry stamp, entry card, house lease and Truevisions contract.

Presented everything to young lady in foyer who checked everything and gave me a ticket number and sent me to desk 9.

Waited about 5 minutes for my number to be called, gave all the documents to the lady behind the desk after she had checked everything she asked for 300 baht and told me to return in 20 minutes.

After having a coffee in the place outside (Aroi Dee) it was back inside to pick up the certificate, all told about 45 mins and a pretty painless experience.

NB. I had all my original documents with me but apart from my passport they never asked to see them.

  10. I am on a Retirement extension currently living in Thailand with my Thai girlfriend, I have 2 adult daughters in the UK who I would like to visit for a 2-3 week holiday. My girlfriend doesn't work as she is fully financially supported by me, she doesn't own any land but has 3 sons and 2 grandchildren in Thailand.

How easy will it be for me to get her a Tourist Visa to come with me to the UK?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

  11. After reading all the doom and gloom and stories on here about renewing your passport I decided that even though my passport didn't expire until Dec 2017 I would renew it now ahead of my retirement to LOS this coming June.

I made an appointment at Peterborough at a weeks notice, turned up on the day with form filled in, 2 passport photo's and my old passport and walked out 4 hrs later with new 10 year 9 months passport in hand. At least I now don't have to worry about it now for some time. God knows why they make the process so difficult just because you are applying from abroad!!
