  1. Why does the water in Thong Sala always look like urine.

If the water company can't supply decent clean water in the 4 inch plastic pipes, how are they gonna manage to fill and pressurize the black 10" pipes that are being installed around the island.

Has the water been tested by indepeendent sources?

Sounds like it's been passed by the management.

  2. I'm a bit doudtfull about your hunting aptitude, if you ever get the chance, you'll be a lot better off downwind than up. As for hitting a wild boar at a range of one mile, who do you know with a Barrett .50 cal sniper rifle?

  3. In the soi I usually stay in when I'm in Bangkok, there is a young thai lad, maybe 22 years old, several times I've seen him wearing a T-shirt with the following legend;

    fuc_k today

    fuc_k yesterday

    fuc_k tomorrow

    and in red capitals

    AND fuc_k YOU

It's the only T-shirt i've seen that I've found so provocative that I've considered taking offence to it. I wonder what would happen if this lad walked into a British pub wearing it., I think he would leave a few of of his teeth behind in some of the pubs I've relaxed in.

  4. Thank you kelvin, that clears up a bit even though I am still a bit confused in that I assume that if a diagnostics program manages to test all possible functions of a microprocessor, or chipset, then how come so much firmware is full of bugs?

Is it the graphics part in a graphical user interface that causes most bugs?

My DVD player, for example, uses a chipset that can read several different movie formats, and rarely will it freeze or cause me any trouble - if it cannot do something, it usually just tells me so. But my PDA phone that, admittedly, tries to do a lot more than the DVD player, keeps freezing and acting up.

The dianostic programme will test the microprocessor functions, it's the end user that writes the firmware, it's his responsibility to properly test and debug the code. A complex piece of firmware will have many thousands ( millions? ) of lines of code, it's simply not possible to predict every single combination of events that a complex system will encounter and therefore not possible to test for correct handling of them by the firmware.

I spent 30 years mainting mainframe computer systems, a large part of the workload was updating firmware to deal with problems encountered in the field which had not been foreseen in the factory. This is not due to incompetence in the factory, just the enormous number of permutations of events in a complex software environment.

  5. They are two strokes, but this doesn't mean they have to be noisier, it's just a bad silencing system. This is compounded by the higher frequency of the 2-stroke exhaust note, an equally loud 4-stroke does not bother me much at all, tuk-tuks drive me insane, I hate them with a vengance.

On the polution front, 2-strokes have a total loss lubrication system, all the oil put into them is burned and comes out of the exhaust, hence the cloud of blue smoke behind old or badly adjusted engines. The idea that tuk-tuks are " clean " because they use LPG is a nonsense.

  6. Any gadget using firmware is microprocessor based, the microprocessor will have an instruction set associated with it i.e. it's own programming language. The manufacturer of a gadget, has to write an operating system of his own which is specific to the application, this is called firmware. Microprocessors are used in everything from washing machines to communication sattelites, I think you'll find that the prgrammes ( firmware ) in the sattelite are more complex than the programme in the washing machine.

For testing purposes the microprocessor manufacturer will write a diagnostic program, this is a specific application, it's of no use for any other purpose.

  7. Toner for laser printers is not a liquid, it's a very fine black powder, the only problem I can imagine, is if it gets any moisture in it due to the high humidity in LOS. This could cause it to clump together and give poor print quality.

With such a low print run couldn't you get your stuff printed off in an internet cafe, or are your quality requirements too high?

  8. have you considered enrolling at a school to study the Thai language? One of the forum sponsors ( Walen ) advertise a one year course for 29,500 Baht, you can get a one year ED visa for this purpose, that's a lot cheaper than getting married and divorced and if you wish to live in Thailand, learning the language would be a major advantage.

  9. I was sitting in a little restaurant in Bangkok early this year, around 2-00 a.m. suddenly there were two loud bangs in quick succesion from somewhere nearby, a few people had a look but nothing to be seen. The next day I discover that there had been an argument over a girl in a Karaoke bar about 40 yards away from the restaurant. One of the men was a policeman the other was the girl's boyfreind, the policeman fancied her and was trying to take her away from her boyfreind, the boyfreind was protesting. The policeman settled the argument by pulling his gun and firing two rounds into the ceiling.

  10. If there is a break in the neutral line you would get the symptoms you describe, assuming that you are testing the voltages at the shower unit terminals, you are effectively looking through the shower heater coil at the supply voltage, this will only fall to zero on the neutral side if the neutral is connected.

  11. An apology implies an acceptance of fault on your part, as in the case of breaking a glass, saying sorry does not. However this does not mean that you can simply say sorry for being late for a meeting, if you overslept it would be your fault and an apology would be appropiate, if there was a traffic accident and your taxi got stuck in a traffic jam, it's not your fault and saying sorry would be OK.
