There are many countries that treat Thai citizens living in their country far better than Thai Immigration treat foreigners living in Thailand.  I really believe there will be a lot of foreigners leaving Thailand as their visas come up for renewal.  This exodus is already slowly starting.

Every time a foreigner leaves Thailand, their apartment or condo becomes empty. The restaurants and coffee cafes end up with one less customer, as do other stores they shop at.  Once these people leave, it is doubtful of them ever returning.  In spite of what many Thai visa posters think, over time this foreign exodus will have a negative effect on the local Thai business's where these foreigners live.

I read a fair amount of smug comments about these expats being unable or unwilling to abide by immigrations monetary requirements and are happy these people are being forced to leave.  Shame on the pompous and smug expats who make these comments.  I hope the fleas of a thousand Camels infest their nostrils.  As to the expats who are negatively affected by all this nonsense, I hope the best for you. ????

Well, in the country where I come from Thai citizens have to pay tax and must have a health insurance. I don't have to pay tax in Thailand and I am not forced (not yet) to have a health insurance. I have one but it was my free decision. It seems logic to me, that a country requires something of immigrants. And I think Thailand does not require from immigrants too much. Expats, being unable or unwilling to abide the immigration monetary requirements are not welcome in any country and will be sent away. Personally, these expats do not affect me, unless I have to accept harder changes in the laws because of their inability to fulfill a minimum of requirements. If you get into trouble due to a reluctant emigrant or face higher demands, I would wonder to whom you would like to send the fleas of a thousand camels

  2. If the authorities really want to go against the Visa Agencies, an application for renewal must be made by the applicant personally and not by a hired visa agency. To be sure, the bank book and passport would need to be audited during the 3 months reports. The 3 months report would not last longer than before and the immigration office would have reached that only expats with enough money and without fraud are living in the country. And it would be death for the crooked visa agencies. Expats who do not support this idea should stay where they come from. Thailand is not a welfare agency that allows emigrants to live without money. Please remember that we can live here without taxes. The request for a certain amount of money is therefore justified.
800,000 baht, which are untouched in a bank account, is not very much money. Daily life does not cost a lot of money, so an investment of 800,000 baht makes sense and for the rest a minimum of retirement assets or whatever is enough AND the bank book shows moves in and out while the pillar of 800,000 baht is always there, untouched. Presumably, the authorities would extend your stay with a welcoming smile and without questions .
But it needs a stable backbone that many emigrants do not have or do not want to have. To them: Please go, you put all the other expats in a bad light.
It could be so easy ....

  3. It seems pretty logic to me that a country tries to get rid of foreign freeloaders.

But it is also a fact that everything is exaggerated by the press. For me, this is not a serious change in the laws, but a letter to the immigration offices to examine certain applicants for a pension visa a little closer, especially from the countries where the embassy has stopped to provide any proof of income.

The 800000/400000 variant I do not see in danger and a change would make no sense, but degenerate into a loss business for land and banks. After all, a retiree not only needs the 800000 baht, but also money to live on. And this usually comes from abroad. So the country gets foreign currency. In order to prevent certain freeloaders, it would be useful if an application for a retirement visa would have to be submitted personally by the applicant. One could thus prevent the unclean business of certain offices who show false bank receipts and go to the immigration authorities instead of the applicants. It is wrong to punish people who live their lives in a clean and decent manner in a host country with regulations that are a burden for many. For those who think that only rich people are good for the country, I say every lawful Baht is good for the country. Even small animals contribute to prosperity, unless they are shitty and cheat. And for those who can or want to stay in a host country only with cheating and crooked business, stay where you are! Far away! You only harm us!

  4. Have recently read a article about this problem in a european newspaper. The authorities there are aware of that and not happy with it

This mob has no respect for the poor people of the country and the hosting country. They are not even welcome in their home countries where they ran around and bluff with their begging tour through other countries.

Thailand suffers already under the non stop drunk bawling sex tourists (at least they bring money)... We do not need another mob here. :angry:OUT !!!!

It is forbidden for tourists to work in thailand. So begging and selling pictures or whatelse should be classified as work, so this mob can be arrested and deported. The corresponding embassy should be involved and forced to pay for the flight back. The problem will ease down within a good time.

How CNN can make such an announcement defies my logic. The report in my opinion is an insult to many other great cities.

Diverse plus great tasting food can be found in numerous cites world wide, served outdoors, in appropriately run and conducted businesses.

Many street vendors in BBK create mess and pollution. Block or restrict the public rights of way making navigating the pavements very dangerous at times, especially for the elderly, infirm or parents/guardians with young children or infants.

The food is normally exposed to bacteria, pollution and prepared/cooked, stored inadequately.

Bangkok is a major city, not an open street market. It's time business owners wise-up and insure they provide a clean, hygienic and safe environment for their customers, plus tourists

For so long, it's been far too an Irresponsible way of making a living.

Whilst at it, get rid of those annoying street vendors selling t-shirts, socks and the rest of the cxxp etc, who also infringe on people's right-of-way. They too make the city resemble a filthy, uncontrolled, open market place you'd normally find in very rural villages, and in my view, they too also seem to think that they have special rights and privileges!

Greedy! Comes to my mind. Clean the city up. I'm in full support of this move. Make Bangkok a clean and safe place to enjoy. It can be done.

"The food is normally exposed to bacteria, pollution and prepared/cooked, stored inadequately." Hmmmm?????

Most food will be freshly prepared after ordering in a hot wok where all the bacteria are killed. I eat regularly in these shops and I have never been sick of it. The only serious food poisoning I suffered at the breakfast buffet of a 5 star hotel in BKK...

If you want a sterile city, you are in the wrong place in BKK.These shops on the street belong to the life and the cityscape and feed many people .. customers as well as providers...

Even in "sterile"  Singapore you will find these street kirchens...

    Welcome to Asia.

(and stop these BMA dreamers - their ideas cannot be done!)

  6. Can someone protect the people and BKK from such idiotic ideas? Guess there are many other important problems to solve.

Every time I'm in BKK, most of these places are crushing full. And I prefer to eat in there too. Many people, no matter what stand, are there to eat and are dependent on these street restaurants. Mostlikely these BMA guys too....

And a lot of these kitchens offer real good food. If not avoid it and choose another one.

One of my good friends and his family own such a transportable kitchen, they are close to my home and I eat there almost every day. Good food, good selection, every day different dishes, I NEVER got sick and for 50 Baht I am more than full.....  it is of course cheaper than restaurants (mostly closed when I want my lunch) and it is cheaper than cooking yourself if you live alone and when you're busy with work.

I hope the city where I live will not come up with such idiotic ideas.
