  1. If you research this topic (peripheral neuropathy) on the Internet, especially at pubmed.gov and at the diabetes websites like Mendoza.com or Dr. Bernstein.com, you find a huge difference between what Americans and Europeans prescribe. I just bought Alpha Lipoic Acid because it is prescribed in Europe. The U.S suggest taking Vitamin B-12. Every country says lower bad fats and increase the good ones like salmon, sardines, avocados, olive oil and avocado oil. Bernstein says limit carbs to 6 for breakfast, 12 for lunch and 12 for dinner. Drat! 30 carbs per day! And I love buying iced coconuts. Well, coconut water is 45 carbs so I guess I can cheat a bit and drink 1/3 of the water every day at breakfast for 3 days. When I go to On-kha-ju for lunch I'll have to order steamed fish. Rats! However, stabbing pains in my feet and numb toes are even more horrifying. I get a foot and leg massage almost every day plus swim 2 hours every morning.

  2. High blood sugars can damage the Vegas nerve. Go to Dr. Richard Bernstein's web seminars. He has a lot to say about how to recover.  1st control blood sugars, next drink low carb smoothies and walk. Do not eat anything that can block the opening. Cucumber water is good. Whey protein is good. Test. 8x day or more. Do not go hypo. Buy a slow cheap treadmill and walk indoors with the air on on.

  3. Get blood tests for all vitamins and minerals. Diabetes "eats" magnesium, metformin destroys B-12. Excess peeing eliminates D-3. Always take multivitamins 12 hours apart. 2x day. Stop salting food and take potassium. Correct ratio is 5-1. Instead of instant whatever's, go to On-Ka-Jhu in CM and eat veggies. Take home a salad for later. Costco has a diabetes pack...vitamins for diabetics. Instead of yummy noodles, give the noodles to the dog and substitute diced zucchini. That means you take your kao soi  home and share with the puppy. Don't let the Thai see you.

  4. I swim 2 hours every morning. I scuba also. I use a swim snorkel and exhale through the nose. I try to keep out all water. Alcohol and water=magic ear. Over the counter ear-eye antibiotic drops work well. In the ocean I wear a 2mm neoprene cap with a chin strap. I apply magic-ear and the antibiotic drops.

  5. Lease = 30 years with renewal. You can sell your lease to another. The point of the yearly payment is to make the arrangement worthwhile for the Thai friend. Keep the land book and papers in your safe AS WELL AS THE LEASE agreement.

  6. I did it. I pay the attorney $85,000 baht per year to "hold" my property. Remember all the friends of your Thai buddy will be advising your buddy to take over your property. Hence a yearly payment to keep everyone happy. Can't afford this? Don't buy land.

  7. I feel for you. I don't have an endo in Chiang Mai. I return to California every 3-4 months for meds and advice. Exercise 3 hours per day...that will help. I swim 2 hours in the morning then work out with a personal trainer who comes to my house. I have a cross cable machine, weight bench, weights, Swiss balls, Kettlebells, Theraband. Yoga straps. When California Wow shut down, I started gaining weight. You can download the Dr. Bernstein books at Amazon using your Kindle app. He says 6 carbs for breakfast, 12 for lunch and 12 for dinner. He has great recipes for breakfast....shrimp omelette...for example. He has some desserts that are yummy and low carb. Dr. Bernstein has survived Type 1 for over 60 years. He is in his 80s now. He has free lectures you can get at his website. My California endo yells at me if I eat rice or put milk in my coffee. She allows me 4 test strips per day. Bernstein says use more. Always eat the same amounts and same number of grams of protein until you get it right. You can order A1c test kits for at home testing. I am currently A1c=7. Not very good. Bernstein wants A1c = 5 or lower. I eat out at Oh Ka Jhu and Black Canyon Coffee. Cashew chicken, zero rice.I know the ingredients. At Oh Ka Jhu I take 2 giant Ziplock bags and bag half. Bernstein explains that you can't stuff yourself...even if it's only rocks your blood sugar will go up.

  8. Thonglor animal hospital neutered my expensive little dog. Two professors of vetinary surgery did an excellent job. Would have cost me $700 dollars in the u.s. $200 dollars.

  9. Sorry. I guess it sounds confusing. I have dive bags, 100 lbs of luggage and my puppy. She stays with all the luggage and puppy while I pay overweight and return with the receipt. When the bags are finally on the belt we drink coffee and discuss what has to be done next at my house..or we just chat.

  10. I wonder if more seniors in Chiang Mai would like to hire my house administrator to be a "guardian angel". She is retiring after teaching at the nurses college for 30 years. She is a RN with lots of experience. She solves my problems: like where to buy a complete surgical kit to take with me when I scuba dive in remote places. Like the marine wilderness off the coast of Burma. She instructs my maid and gardener. I pay her $48,000 baht each year, one month at a time. She has my back. I email her and call her whenever I need help. She phones her network of nurses and gets information. That's how I "discovered" Oh-Ka-Jhu, an organic salad place where I eat 2x week and take home a salad for another 2 meals. She buys soil for my garden, instructs the gardener where to paint and repair, tells the maid what I want. I don't speak Thai. Just not able to hear those tones. She takes me to Ram-1, driving my car and always takes me to the airport and guides me through the process of leaving and arriving in Chiang Mai. I'm 73 now and hope to live another 10 years in Chiang Mai with her help. She babysits my little dog, living in my house at night when I am away. She has an ATM card to my household account, keys to my house and car, and is a huge help to me.

  11. I hire a RN as a house administrator, $4,000 baht a month, whether I'm in Chiang Mai or not. NOW, thanks to all your comments, I will wear my cell phone in my waist purse and input her number. Also, insurance info and basic medical info. I will give her a copy of all information. I think you have saved my life. Whether I'm in California or Chiang Mai, my waist purse has to be able to solve everything. I carry a blood sugar meter and a fruit paste strip for low blood sugars plus insulin for high. I need to carry Kaiser numbers also for California. Thank you, Thai Visa.

  12. I get all these things from RimPing. Now is $10 a reasonable price for a small can of wild-caught salmon? Sure if I have an extra amount of money. At the end of the month I'm eating canned tuna from Makro and roast chicken from BigC+. I usually put 10 cans of salmon in my suitcases that I buy in California at Costco. But... I run out after a while. Someone wanted cauliflower. Always at RimPing.

  13. Ok. I didn't do any research before answering a member with pain in hands and feet. I then had an attack of remorse and went to *removed*'s website and he recommends (to counter the effects of statins) CoQ10, Carnitine, magnesium, and alpha lipoid acid. Also, stabilize your blood sugars at 70-100. If your waist line looks like Paddington Bear then get an A1c test at Ram-1. If normal then go to *removed* website for the dosage or ask the doc at Ram-1.

  14. Good health can disappear in an eye blink. You and I need to write out instructions with phone numbers to instruct our administrators, spouses, or friends what to do while we are lying on the floor incapacitated. Printout and attach to refrigerator or frame and hang on the wall. My house administrator has an atm card that gives her access to my household account. Now how do I add funds to that account if I am unable to go to the bank? Hmm. I also need to add my son's name to my savings account and make out a notarized will. Also, I need to write down my insurance numbers and how to contact my insurance company. I've got a lot of work to do.

  15. Wear your phone, credit card and $500 baht. Find a taxi service in English, keep the number. You need a maid who can feed your dog. I have a house "administrator" who has my keys, can drive my car, is an RN, babysits my dog, and who I call in emergencies. She administers the gardener and maid. She is paid $4000 baht a month to help me. She runs everything smoothly. She lives in my house when I'm away and takes care of my dog. I do not wear socks or house slippers in the house. Bare feet only. You probably won't slip if barefoot. She takes me to ram-1 when I run out of insulin. Bangkok hospital is closer. I should open an account there.

  16. I was bothered by extremely painful neuropathy until I read dr Bernstein's book (Amazon) twice. Now I get 6 carbs for breakfast, 12 for lunch and 12 at dinner. One glass of wine. I use lettuce leaves instead of tortillas and make tacos. Pasta? Spiralized zucchini. Pizza? A Swiss chard or spinach crust with all the toppings. Cauliflower crust is great also. Zero fruit. Zero rice, bread, pasta, sugar, potato, cereal. Two weeks to pain free. BUT IF YOU START CHEATING, THE PAIN RETURNS. You can hear his lectures on UTube. Download to your computer with Kindle.
