  1. @OP: How about living-up to your name.

I do. But it's no fun riding a bike down Sukhumvit, or laden with shopping, or after a night out on the beers.

So after we've had a few at a bar in Nana plaza, are you saying walk to Sukhumvit 11 to hail a taxi.

  2. Have had lots of problems with Bangkok taxis. Only rarely came across a nice taxi driver. Problems range from..driver trying to negotiate fixed fare once in the cab (and not use meter). Speeding, weaving in/out of traffic lanes. Talking on mobile while driving. Saying they don't have change when payment is made.

Started using Grabtaxi and the drivers are well behaved. When you book using the app, the drivers pic, phone number and vehicle registration comes up on screen. Once (after using it many times without problems) I had a driver cancel the booking then turn-up in a car and the registration number was different (to the one seen on GrabTaxi app). I refused to get-in and reported the incident using the "report" feature in the app. (happened in another country, not Thailand)

The support team got back immediately to say thanks for reporting it.

edit: One trip the same taxi was speeding, weaveing in/out of traffic, talking on mobile, saying he had no change...that was a trip from a Hotel in central Bangkok to Swampi airport. The hotel called the Taxi.

  3. Cannot comprehend how BKK traffic can affect the ratings used..i.e. how does the traffic situation affect impoliteness of bus employees. To be honest, I haven't really come across many impolite bus employees. Have come across many impolite taxi drivers though.

BKK's traffic just seems like an excuse for anything and everything. We can throw money at a problem, hire consultants, or make the system more efficient. There must be some reasons why there are so many cars on the BKK streets.

  4. No idea about the Nok air fly and ride service, but DIY from udon was a breeze.

Can recommend Lalco AR hotel on Saylom Road, Vientiane. Paid around 16 USD for standard room (incl. wifi and breaky). Second night upgraded to superior double room. Definitely worth paying a bit extra for this room type.

They have a free Vientiane International airport to/from Hotel shuttle service. But you would not be making use of this if you are going to/from udon to this hotel.

Edit: I paid 350 THB (around 10USD) for Taxi from Friendship bridge (laos side) to Vientiane centre. Ignore touts hanging around near the Loas immigration windows quoting 500-600 THB. negotiate taxi after going through Loas immigration.

  5. If we are to rely on the local thai banks we need to be able to raise our grievances. Indeed, most Thai Banks provide feedback mechanism in order for us to do this. Bangkok Bank is one of those banks. Have a look at:

It is important to know the difference between airing a grievance publicly and raising it with the bank.

Some members themselves have aired quite general grievances about SCB bank in the provinces, but now claim that raising a significant and legitimate grievance would see Banking staff magically appear on this forum to offer assistance. Incorrect, do not rely solely on this forum to raise grievances. Raise it with the bank using the proper channels AND mention it here so others are aware.

  6. Heads-up on using VietcomBank ATM's. Beware, there is a fee of 50,000 VND. Yes, it's only a couple of USD. But take note I was only able to withdraw 1 Million Dong in a single transaction. Even that was totally unexpected, because the ATM threw me a curv ball right at the end of the transaction and asked "Do you agree to 50,000 VND fee"". I said "NO", the ATM still dispensed the money!.

To pull 10M dong, it would cost 500k Dong (around 23 USD). No thanks...

Agribank has a higher pull amount, 3M dong and only charges 22k dong.

By the way, there are reports that BIDV bank charges 165k for a 5Million dong pull, and no mention about a fee until the money is dispensed!!. I think there is a BIDV ATM at Hanoi airport, Beware!.

  7. If you are in Saigon, there is a popular Money Exchange place near the Saigon Opera House (Kinda Opposite the opera House). Can exchange all currencies, including thai bhat, gives good rates. Actually identical to the xe.com rate.

The tourist info centre just down the road also has money exchange (only open during certain hours), but their rate is slightly lower. Same as the money exchange place inside Parkson shopping mall. The other day Thai Bhat rate at both these places was 1 THB = 560 VND. The place by the Opera house it was 1 THB = 627 VND.

  8. Not everything revolves around money. i.e. we don't need to hire an English language cunning linguist in every branch.

Just improve the English as a Foreign language element in school syllabuses. Have staff proficient in French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, etc. in at least some branches and make customers aware which branches. May be introduce these languages to the school syllabus, so students can choose one of these languages instead of English.

  9. saai.gif ....Anyway....have a look at the Bangkok bank website that claim they have support for foreign customers:

    http://www.bangkokbank.com/BangkokBank/PersonalBanking/SpecialServices/ForeignCustomers/Pages/default.aspx

That's correct. They claim this. Whether the foreign customer receives this support (especially at the branch) is what is key here. I mean, does the foreign customer receive this feature (foreign customer support) from Bangkok bank?

  10. Some of you guys seem to think that everything in Thailand should be designed to meet the standards set in other countries and/or provide services and facilities similar to the ones you have known previously. Heads up, being fit for purpose in Thailand means meeting the needs of a mostly rural population of low income and poorly educated people, the banking system does that and with respect to security, it does it in spades.

Dont' think the OP went in to a Bangkok Branch bank out in the sticks. Even if he did, I doubt the same would not have occurred for a rural low income thai person.

...and with respect to security, it does it in spades.

Probably more needs to be done to check the excesses of the execs.

  11. Bangkok bank - not the easiest bank to bank with.

I once went to a branch to open an account, they asked for work permit or letter from Embassy/High Commission. Embassy said they don't issue such letters. Came back to the branch told them this, but they kept saying they needed letter from Embassy.

I approached another bank and they opened the account in half the time I spend speaking to staff at Bangkok bank.

OP - mistake number 1 - logic is not a feature in the 'thainess' scale. Even if the scale extended to another galaxy, I still don't think it will feature in it. Some of the stuff I've come across...honestly..It defies belief. Absolutely shocking...I would spend hours trying to figure out what on earth possessed the thai person to behave in a certain manner...

Reckon if they were good bits worthy enough to be picked-up, these behaviours would suddenly start to make sense to me.

  12. If you use your tablet as a phone (with SIM), how do you carry it around everywhere?.

I've come across this product, and this product online. Does anyone use them or similar when travelling on public transport or car, van, motorbike. If you carry a handbag (if you are a woman...or indeed if you are a man and you carry a handbag, whatever rocks your boat) then its easier. But if you put your tablet in a briefcase or rucksack its not very practical to whip out, when you want to use it. Please keep all answers clean.

Sorry OP don't mean to hijack your thread.

  13. I've seen some passengers on Budget airlines use their own Tablets to watch movies.

Yes, and I'm one of them, though not on local budget flights, you will be landing before the movie finishes. I watch mine on long haul flights.

Short haul is any flight under 3 hours.

    Medium haul is 3 - 6 Hours.

    Long haul 6-12 hours.

Ultra long haul over 12 hours.

    According to this source.

So on a 1 hour short haul flight, no, you wouldn't be able to squeeze in a movie of standard length, which I believe is around 1 hr 30 minutes. Some movies are of course longer in duration. So, its probably a bad idea to start watching lord of the rings, return of the king on any short haul flight.

  14. 78% of swedes are concerned about racism, while only 48% are concerned about immigration levels. See:

It's the Swedish Right-wing populist party Sweden Democrats that adds the oxygen to the anti-immigration sentiment and promote xenophobic tendencies. (see: http://www.liu.se/forskning/forskningsnyheter/1.605856?l=en) Thankfully the party only hold 49 of the 349 seats (14%) in the Swedish Riksdag.

    OK...

More Swedes ‘want increase in refugees’

    http://www.thelocal....ase-in-refugees

Nice rhetoric, however it is somewhat creative and flexible concerning the interpretation and representation of the truth.

The adage, ''Lies, dammed lies and statistics springs to mind.

A fine attempt to cloud the issue on a par with the publicity campaign methods of the late Herr Goebbels

Unless matters have changed since I left school some 54 years ago 44% does not equate to a majority.

44 percent of respondents in an opinion poll undertaken by Ipsos for Sunday's edition of Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, believe that Sweden should take more refugees - an increase of 18 percentage points since February.

The link above does not work, because you missed out an "s" when quoting. Its ...want-increase-in-refugees. See below for correct link:

Not just one kind of majority. There's absolute majority, simple majority, supermajority etc..

  17. Here is how the Hungarian state run Television report the Migration crisis. See also:

The criminal psychologist speaking on the video clip above says immigrants "start a fight because they learned the aggressive way of handling conflict from their parents, it's part of their culture, therefore if there is little time to solve conflict they stick with ...."

The same criminal psychologist Dr. Jozsef Vegh in August 2015, gave strong approval in allowing Hungarian prisoners to use cellphones behind bars.

Now he has appeared in public giving his expert opinion on the culture/behaviour of all immigrants. Surely he is not qualified to give such an opinion. His expertise lie elsewhere:

  18. Hide the location of buildings earmarked for migrants ?

OK what happens when they're occupied, how do the Swedes intend to hide hundreds of unwanted migrants or are they harbouring the forlorn hope that the anti feeling will have died down ?

Fat chance and if anything opposition will become stronger as the influx continues with no sign of it ever stopping.

OK what happens when they're occupied, ...
Ensure there is adequate law enforcement, bring those responsible for the crimes of destroying public property, breach of the peace, racial hatred before the Courts and hand them sentences to assist building the same buildings they burnt down. If its too difficult for them to help build these buildings, at least do the painting.
It's law-makers, and judicial officials (in some cases) that decide who can and can't enter a country, not some criminal with a fire-torch in their hands.
