Why not move the business from classroom based to online based or as I said before he can get work as a teacher without a degree if he wants to teach. I have taught for two years in Bangkok without any drama while earning 40000B PM, no degree or qualifications. I have since returned to Australia with my Thai wife and enrolled part time in a BSc degree course at Curtin while working full time. I know when I return to Thailand I can gain employment at any private school or Uni and earn 60-70000 pm teaching English. I did worry while I was teaching that if I was caught I would stand alone and no teaching agency or school would stand by me. This is the only reason I stopped teaching and returned to my country to gain the qualifications I needed to pursue this line of work in the kingdom. It's not worth the aggravation, worry or stress breaking the law in Thailand, for as we all know, farang are second class citizens and always will be.

By offering an olive branch now - just a New Year present with no admission of wrongdoing - playing his cards smartly to get them onside, he has more chance of being allowed to continue on.
WHY CONTINUE.......... He would get work as a teacher without a degree especially now that he has 16yrs teaching experience.

At the end of the day, the OP was operating a school to HELP THAI PEOPLE and Immigration would understand that, while at the same time they know he was working illegally.
At the end of the day, it is night time ....He was working illegally and operating a school illegally END OF STORY, END OF DAY. Sounds to me like he was helping himself not Thailand, 16 years working illegally on a tax-free income..wake up to yourself. Your card is marked you will be caught and strung up by the short and curlies, get out now while you can or use your command of the English languish....(couldn't resist it) to write a book about your experience inside the Bangkok Hilton, midnight express springs to mind. All joking aside, walk away now or get a solicitor to advise you not a barstool forum like this.
good luck with it all.

Thailand is not China and suggesting that this fellow's days are numbered is ridiculous.
There could be any of a number of reasons why Immigration was monitoring the classroom. It might be that a student's parent was unhappy about something at the school and complained to them in spite. It might be that a competitor school complained. It might be that the OP or his wife unwittingly offended an Immigration officer or someone closed to an Immigration officer and did not even realise it. Anything could have caused the OP to come under Immigration's spotlight. Without knowing what has caused him and his operation to come to their attention, your comments are alarmist. Shutting down the operation might put an end to the attention he was receiving.
If the OP and his wife are reasonable people they might just be able to work the issue through if the authorities do come knocking. Saying the OP's days in Thailand are numbered is ridiculous. That is not the case at all. Even if something comes of this, it can be worked out and often the Thais are remarkably easy to deal with if you are respectful to them and admit you were in the wrong. Contrition and respect go a long way when dealing with investigating officers in Thailand. It's not like the OP was dealing drugs or doing something else very clearly wrong, right?!

I suggest you should walk away now and don't go down the road of bribing IM or anyone as that will lead to more trouble down the road.let us face it, if it can't be done in a legal fashion, it should not be done at all.remember you are Farang and always will be, Thais can bribe and bend the Thai system and get away with it but for you to do this is dangerous. If caught, you will end up in a Thai prison if only for a short time, ask yourself is that an experiance you want to have?.Get out while the going is good. Best of luck...

so if i fly to laoe can i get a visa to enter like i did on previous visa runs. also can i use my new passport that has no stamps on it , would that be better than the oz passportthat has many stamps.
-
I have had my ozzy passport recorded and was asked to sign a comment made by immigration on my last visit to Thailand in March 2016. what happened was i was in Thailand for over a year doing visa runs and extending my stay etc. i had to return to oz for a week and upon my return to bangkok i was questioned about why i had no visa. i phoned my Thai girlfriend and she spoke to the immigration officer and he eventually stamped my oz passport and let me in. he wrote on the stamp that next time i want to enter i must have a visa and asked me to sign beside this comment.I have just renewed my Irish passport in bangkok and it has no stamps (as i have been using my oz passport , which is nearly full). so what i need to know if i fly from oz back to bangkok and produce my new Irish passport will they accept it and give me the normal tourist visa and i can start again , or will they still base my entry on my ozy passport in which case i would need a visa before i arrive.
so do i fly to say laos or cambodia etc and get a re entry stamp on my ozy or New irish passport.? not sure what the best course of action would be.

You don't mess around with the Thai police, personally I give them a wide berth unless I want to hand over cash for some bull they come up with-it had a chance to visit the Bangkok Hilton to visit an inmate, pretty scary place...

Watch and wait it been overvalued for far too long it will fall to the old norms shortly.
New Nordic holdings will be the first to fall as it is looking very shaky right now, when the property market crashes ,which it will the currency will follow. The Chinese are buying as must property as possible in Europe and Australia and are no longer concerned with the Thai market as it is too unstable and also the political situation is volatile. Sit back and wait the times they are a changin....eta
