  1. And the paranoid part of me is thinking that this is the first step taken to rid Thailand of the pesky guavas (farrang) that are not wanted

Things seem pretty confused down south at the moment as well. Clearly something did happen in December and it seems folks that normally are aware of what is happening just don't seem to know. I'm guessing that it is related to the "provisional" nature of the folks in power at the moment.

  2. Well, I feel kind of out of place posting this question in a forum that includes international bank mergers, etc. In any case, I have a brief question and it is obscure enough that perhaps this is the forum where there might most likely be readers who could advise me.

    To the point. I

    1. I have been working in Thailand for some time now and have accumulted bahts in a Thai Bank account. (Thai military bank).

    2. I am working legally on a work permit so have stamped pay slips from the public institution where I work.

    3. Can I exchange my bahts for, preferrably traveller's cheques (in American dollars, pounds, etc), using my stamped pay slip in the same manner I would use a Certificate of foreign exchange or perhaps there is another form of financial instrument that I can purchase with the bahts that is easily exchangeable outside of Thailand.

The obvious questions that arise...I closed my home country bank account when I left due to tax exemption regulations, so I can't use that route or a credit card solution.

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

  3. I did post a rather lenghty message yesterday, can't find it today, so I'll try again.

I am wondering if in Phuket it is possible to convert bahts to dollars or to buy traveller's cheques in American (or pound sterling, etc) values.

I ask this because I have been working in central Thailand at a public school (legally, with a work permit) and I have quite a number of bahts built up.

My concern is this, if I had to leave the country quickly, I might be in a jam. I have heard that you can only transport 10000 bahts out of the country in hard currency. If I had to leave with bahts, are they easily converted in other countries.

I have some foreign exchange certificates which will allow some conversion with ease. I have, as well, stamped pay receipts from the school where I work. Will this allow me to convert to dollars or buy traveller's cheques?

Does anyone know or can advise me/

I would prefer to do this in Krabi or Phuket if possible.

    Sure would appreciate any advice.

  4. Hi. Probably an old worn topic but I am a newcomer so please bear with me.

I am working here in Thailand with a work permit.

I have built up a good collection of bahts and had thought that at some point I would just go into a local bank and convert the bahts to preferrably travellers cheques in American Dollars, etc. or just get some American cash.

    Well....easier said than done.

I am in central Thailand and did a "bank tour" both of Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani to try to do this.

I was unsuccessfull. None of the banks in either city seemed to sell travellers cheques or have any American cash to change.

I here conflicting reports of how many bahts you are allowed to take out of the country.

I also don't really want to take bahts out of the country as it might be a currency difficult to exchange in many countries and surely there would be a penalty.

I do have a few exchange certificates allowing me to exchange some of the bahts.

I also have stamped pay slips from my employer saying that the bahts were earned in Thailand.

I really don't want to wait until I get to the airport to sort this out.

Could any of you experienced hands in Thailand advise me on this? Could I exchange the bahts easily in Bangkok or Phuket. Can you buy Traveller's cheques in Thailand. Where?

Also, are bank cards (not credit cards) such as visa electron usable in North America or elsewhere if they are given from a Thai bank.

I find the situation a little confusing and would appreciate any help and advice.

I am in central thailand and would like to not have to go to Bangkok to do this? Is possible.
