  1. Hi, and thanks for any help in advance.

I’m going to do a project with my students to build a Japanese rock garden. I would love to take them on a trip to look at one, however small. If there are none, even something similar would be good, but I don’t know of any around here. Does anyone have any suggestions in or not too far from Hua Hin?

We are also going to need to get rocks - gravel for sure, maybe course sand, and other types of stones. Any suggestions where to find these reasonably priced?

    Thanks

I had it done there last month.  I had to make an appointment about 3 weeks in advance.  The "donation" of 5,000 baht is compulsory, but as I was quoted 20,000 by a hospital in Bangkok, it's well worth it.   The procedure is very quick (no scalpel) and the staff are great.  I have mild hypertension, and the doctor was worried about my blood pressure, so I had to have a lie-down for 30 minutes before they would do it!

How did you make the appointment? I’ve had no luck calling or email. Thanks in advance for the info

I had mine at the same place (Sukhumvit soi 12) back in November 2021.  The compulsory fixed-price "donation" is now 5,000 baht.  Still significantly cheaper than any hospital, even if you drive up from Hua Hin.  The whole procedure takes less than 30 minutes.

    That’s great info, thank you.

  4. Again, thanks for the info, especially about the Soi 6 area and Lavallee (I think this is where you were talking about).  About price range, definitely looking for something more aimed at Thai people (ie budget/not expensive) for the long term, since we have all our own furniture and are comfortable living in a Thai style house with no western style amenities.  But for the first month something mid-range and furnished would be great so I have time to look around and the fam will be comfortable.

  5. Thanks for the reply Michaelaway

The reason I'm asking is to avoid the hotel stay if possible, and if I could get some good suggestions I could drive up for 1 day the week before we move, nail it down and then come back to move the family.  As it stands, driving around looking will probably take longer than 1 day.  I also looked at some websites, but the only things I really saw were pool villas for super expensive.

  6. Hi and thanks in advance for any advice and help.

I'll be moving to Hua Hin from Bangsaphan next month and am hoping some of you out there can help me out with some information about housing.  I am thinking my family and I (wife and two kids) will possibly rent a furnished house for 1 month while I take that time to look for a more long term rental.  The school I will be teaching at is off of the canal road, so something in that area or maybe over the hill towards the new immigration office would be great.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks again

  7. Hello and thanks in advance for any info and help.

I am a fully credentialed American teacher with a Master's in Education who has been living in Thailand for almost ten years, first as a Peace Corps volunteer and then teaching at a Thai public school.  I've finally had enough dealing with all the inefficiency and mismanagement that goes with working at such a school, so am interested in finding a job at an international school.

I would appreciate the names of any American curriculum schools in Bangkok or throughout the country, if there are any, so I can start seeing if any will be hiring for next term.

    Thanks again

  8. Every contract has always been 12 months, which includes 9 months of teaching and 3 months of paid holiday.  The holiday usually comes in October, March and April.

This contract is 12 months, which includes the usual 9 months of teaching but we were unpaid for 2 months, May and June.  We will teach October and March to make up the lost time.  The students paid the same fees as every year in the past, we will teach the same amount as every year in the past, why should we be paid 2 months less?

  9. We agreed to not be paid while school was closed, but that was under the assumption that the missed months would just be canceled and we would keep the old calendar.   They just moved the missed months to October and March though so we'll be teaching the full 12 months worth of teaching but only getting paid 10 months.

The contract has the agreement to not be paid but also includes no students in October and March.

  10. Hello, and thanks in advance for any help.  I've taught basic math to Matayom 1-3 for many years, but now am teaching the supplementary math class for each as well.  Wondering if anyone out there has taught these before and has any teaching materials they'd like to share?

PS I have tons of great stuff for the basic math classes and would be happy to share, just let me know in this thread or with a message.

  11. Geez, I guess I’ll spell it out for you - the price of mangosteen is representative of generally inflated prices, usually meant for farangs, and would indicate rents in that area would probably also be higher.  If you could read well you would have understand all that since I was asking about housing in that paragraph.

  12. That’s exactly what I am thinking Stokakrishna.  I am not excited about the pollution/traffic etc. and would really prefer to stay where i live now but that looks like its not possible due to my changing work situation.

The school is West of Hua Hin out past where the bypass (highway 37) hits 3218 - so Kao Tao seems quite far.

What I am thinking now is out WEST on 3218 towards 3301 or down 3219/4030 towards Pranburi.  Sorry if this is not how people usually refer to the roads but I don’t know the area well.

I don’t want to live in an area that caters to westerners but in one that is mainly Thai.  I want a simple house (no air, no western kitchen, 1 or maybe 2 bedrooms, Thai style bathroom) and don’t care if I am the only farang for miles.  I will be with my family so am not looking for bars or action, just peace and quiet, clean air, no traffic.
