  1. Yes, it was a used machine. At a guess I would assume it’s probably worth around the price I paid for it. However you could argue it’s 4 years older therefor not worth the price I paid for it ?.

What costs would I have occurred to rent machine the numerous times over the last 4 years  ? Deduct that cost if you can calculate it, from the purchase price and sell at that value. You are still ahead, as you can use the machine when you want, not wait for a hire machine to turn up.

One final point, if you have a excavator, you can take your time and make sure the job is done correctly. When hiring, it’s all about time clock, you are watching the cost, while the company just want to get job done, get their money and away. Do you get a good job, do they care how the end product is ? I accept and respect everyone have their own opinions with regards hire or buy.

  2. In truth, not sure a offset boom would cost that much more than the normal. It’s just a extra pin hinged connection in the main boom arm with a hydraulic ram to offset it. I have used my one only a couple of times, however without it then could not have achieved what I wanted. Another option to consider whether to buy or rent, I have used my machine numerous times to lift equipment of my truck. As in, I  have bought farming equipment like offset disc plough, 8” water pump, round bailer etc. With have the excavator then able to use it almost like a small crane and lift equipment with it. As stated you tend to use these machines more than you think. The 4 years I have had my machine, other than buying some hydraulic oil, then no other maintenance costs. I understand if you are working the machine with high hours, then would occur costs. However the cost to rent a machine for long would be very high.

Following Slugs11's big bale photos ,I come across this balling sugarcane straw  with a high density baler ,each bale weighs about 300 kg ,as far as I know it is it will be used for biofuel.

Slugs 11 uses a rake to put 2 rows of straw into one ,less running about for the baler ,and a more even swath to pick up  ,this one is pto driven ,looking at the label on the machine it was made in Thailand ,same principal  puts 2 to rows in to 1 ,but looking at the field this  could well be 4 rows going in to 1.

This Thai made rake looks identical to the model I have which was imported in from Italy, and both the same being PTO driven. Most likely half the cost I paid ???????? still a very good piece of equipment, and as Kickstart quote save less time in the field with the bailer. Also the straw is a lot cleaner after being raked, the effect of the rake knock the dirt/dust off the straw.

  4. Hi FarmerJo,

The field where we applied the lime has responded very good. The one particular area in the field where previously we could not get anything to grow has been a big change. We planted sweet Israeli (Napier) grass in this field, and the crop has seen  the same growth throughout the field. Really pleased with the results. As for our rice, it’s been a terrible year for us. Most of our rice field lands do not retain the water very good. Hence what little rain we got at the beginning of the wet season resulted in the rice seedlings dying off. I redrilled most of the fields, but again due to lack of rains and the ability for them to retain water, ended up cutting half the fields for cattle feed as had more grass grow then rice. The planter is working good, we had good germination with the rice, however due to lack of rains the crop failed. The planter has not been idle, as have been using it to drill sweet corn for cattle feed.

  5. Kickstart, we used a Red Angus straw, have another calf (heifer) from the same bull. She is more reddish/ brown colour. I like buying our AI straws from Porn Chaiinter in Bangkok, as they have pictures of the bulls, which straws you are planing to buy.  Noticed on their web site the other day, they have a lot of AI straws from new bulls (different breeds), including Limousine, which they have never stocked before

I think the other 25% is more Thai native, if you look at the cow, she has no real hump on the shoulders which is a typical Brahman trait, hence my leaning to thinking Thai native ?. We bought her from a local cattle market 3 1/2 yrs ago as a young heifer, the red Angus is her 3rd Calf.

  6. I am sorry, actually meant to place these pictures in the Official farming Photo’s thread. Somehow I managed to start a new thread. Anyway, appreciate the comments, accept the one about peaceful animals. People seem to forget, if there was no final destination, then most of the animals would not be there in the first place. Very few people keep cows as pets.

We use a Thai guy from one of the villages Close by, to do the AI. We use to use the vet, however he was unreliable and his success rate was low. The guy we use now is excellent, and store our AI straws for us. Would say we have a success rate 75/80% with AI.  However have had a couple of cows, where we could not get them in calf using AI (tried numerous times) ran our bull with them, and bingo, in calf straight away.

  7. At present nobody will be able to answer your question, as these LMG Insurance Long-Stay Visa O-A policies have only recently been put on the market.

But you can contact LMG Insurance and ask them.

What would also be interesting is to know whether you need to sign up 'indefinitely' when you subscribe to the policy and if so what are the conditions to cancel the policy (e.g. 3 months in advance).

Peter, when I took my insurance out with LMG, it was just a case of paying the 7,700 baht, and received the 1 yr insurance which allowed me to get my Non O-A 1 yr extension. There is no signing up for future yrs, so if next yr the premium goes up, then will shop around for other quotes. Cross that bridge when I get there ????

  8. Mamasun, try LMG insurance. You can find them on the internet easily. They are one of the insurance companies approved by immigration. They will insure up to 75 yrs, without medical or health checks. I took the option of having a 200k excess, meaning I would pay the first 200k on any claim. This keep the cost for insurance low. I only need this insurance to get my Non O-A yearly extension, I have no intention to claim on it. I already have another health insurance, which cover me worldwide.

  9. The solenoid valve is in the box connected to the water supply Inlet with outlet going to the shade house. I installed a 2 core cable back from the shade house to a building (approx 50ft), where I have the timer installed. Instead of using a battery, we bought a small cheap power reducer. 220v input x 12v output. This is plugged into A power socket, the timer connects to the 12v output, with the wire from the timer connecting to the solenoid valve. You can still get things from the internet market out of China, just had a 3 lever hydraulic control arrive. (Fast delivery considering the problems going on in the world) just cleaned the box and item before handling.

  10. Just completed my Non O-A year extension at UbonRatchathani immigration office. It was due to expire on 11 May, so had no problem doing it in advance. The office said you can do extension up to 45 days in before the old one expire. The only extra thing I had to do this yr compared to previous years was to get Thai health insurance, which was no problem, and only cost 7700 baht for the yr (Completed the form online with insurance company, no medical or tests required) paid the money and they sent the insurance certificate via email, which I printed off, and immigration accepted with no problems.
