Noise
in Chiang Mai
In Chiang Mai city, you most likely can't find a quiet place, but outside it you probably can. Some selective neighborhoods are springing up outside the city. I've been to one that's quite nice, and you'd never know the neighborhood was there if you were just driving by, as an orchard separates it from the road. There's also various rules on maintaining your house/property. I've also been through another area that is primarily farang & thai spouse owned that has lots of houses that are just rented out to other farangs, although I think they may be temporary residences. In any case, I'm sure there are other areas around CM city that have residence rules that would fit your noise criteria. I'm not an expert in real estate, but given that there's now a Mandarin Oriental hotel (or whatever it's called) it seems the area's developed enough to have some exclusive neighborhoods. Sorry, can't remember the names of any of the places I've been through.

I thought the city of Chiang Mai, possibly including the urban area immediately surrounding it, had a population of around 1M? Bit off from 200-500 K, wonder where I heard it from....

I once read an article in a magazine/paper about a beggar in NYC. Apparently his main season was xmas, where he would hang around upscale shopping areas and beg for money to buy his kids xmas gifts. Turns out he has a house and drives a BMW...

Tarkan, Simarik (the original Kiss Kiss song in Turkish. I know there's been an american and a korean remake of it, any know if there's also a Thai rip?)

hi guys! hope you don't mind me jumping in, but I thought this thread was fun. I'm not sure if this will post right, but guess this one! (a test for the yanks really....please don't think I'm racist or exclusive)

Thanks for the responses! Hmm, I guess what the person, a farang, probably meant was wether or not I'm ethnically Thai & speak Thai (probably why he asked if I was born in Thailand), as sabaijai said. In most cases that's what I'd think too, except that the job ad specifically asked for good english skills, so it was unclear to me that the Thai skills were what was important in our discussion.
Anyhow, just to make sure for furture use, as long as I'm a Thai citizen, I don't need to worry about work permits and such right? I've read some of the threads about enter/exiting Thailand on a Thai pp, so as long as I do that I should be fine right? I also have a citizen ID and am on my mom's tabien bahn.
Thanks!

Dual citizenship is perfectly legal under Thai law
are you sure about that? I've always been told that it's illegal under Thai law, although if there's any penalty they never enforce it. Dual citizen here also.

I recently had correspondence with someone who seemed to think there was a difference between Thai citizen vs national. This was in a possible employment context. I thought they were the same thing, but he seemed to think that location of birth was important, and that being a Thai national was necessary (for working), rather than just a citizen. Could someone shine some light on this please? Thanks! If it makes any difference, I'm not currently residing in Thailand and have not been for quite a while.

Beggar children asking for money is not that unusual. I'd suggest going about your business with only a brief turndown similar to what you'd give a bum on the streets, if not just down right ignoring them. Don't give them any money though, otherwise they'll swarm you and not leave you alone. You reprimanding them won't change their behaviour.

my parents: dad is american, mom is thai. Still married for 25ish years. Used to fight but have steadily become more religious over the years and mellowed out. If it matters, they are close in age and my mom went to college in the US, although they met in Bangkok. She is a more old fashioned wife (in western terms), cooking, houskeeping etc, in addition to job. But dad takes care of other stuff

Hi,
I'm going to be in Chiang Mai for one month, December, and was wondering if there are good online resources for temp positions, or if anyone knows of anyone who needs a temp worker? I am fluent in English, intermediate in Thai, and a Thai citizen. Basically, my situation is that I'm visiting but am a broke university student who would like to earn some spending money. I have waitressing and office admin experience among a few other things, and learn quickly and can handle a variety of other things such as English conversation partner or tutor perhaps. Thanks for the help!
M
PS I've already checked out www.chiangmainews.com

when I was in Thailand for a few years of grade school 90-93' I would bring Archie comics to school to read. Some of the english teachers would ask to borrow them to read.... I know you can buy them in Thailand, also. Although I think having english subtitles for film/TV is good, they might be a bit fast to read for someone who can't read well. Women's magazines is also a good idea, but not for someone with very low reading skill. They also tend to have a lot of modern/hip language that may confuse a non-native speaker.
My pick: comic books. They don't have too much text lumped together, and there's lots of pictures Something less juvenile than Archie comics though...maybe Tin Tin? Or if she likes action/gory stuff, then Sin City (from which the movie was based).

Can i do it , I am from the u.s. and i want to get out of the U.s.
Thanks for asking.
US wage earners are too expensive, and sometimes have a spoiled, lazy attitude.
I am looking for talent that is not spoon-fed from childhood and is ready to move up to the next level - given the right opportunity. There are plenty of "have-nots" in Thailand, but I am trying to find someone with a bright attitude, nevertheless. I am not asking for hundereds of students. I am only looking for two people, right now.
I guess you arelady know the asnwer to your question and are asking the US question as joke, but the above is my answer.
hmph, sounds like you're basically a tight wad who wants to bank off of cheaper labor, especially with your appeal to the poor "have-nots." Why don't you appeal to US students? There are plenty of very ambitious, skilled ones. Or perhaps some students from India? India's become quite the IT powerhouse. Since it's all through the internet, sounds like anyone anywhere could do it.

This (for me anyway) is an example of a beautiful Thai girl... no makeup, no lip gloss or eye shadow, no special hairdo, just natural beauty...
:D
Credits to sriracha john for originally posting this photo in another forum.
You must be male and therefore blind. She very obviously has makeup on, but is going for the natural look. Still cute though/

Me thinks they picked someone whom they thought could win the Miss Universe pageant, not someone who represents Thailand (she doesn't)
Last Miss Universe winner for Thailand was in 1988, Porntip Nakhirunkanok. She definitely does not look at all Thai.
She is Thai, I'm pretty sure. I remeber her, and actually met her once. Funny, she's not half blood like the rest, she's full but still couldn't speak any Thai.

Er.. maybe it's because Miss Thailand will be entered into the Miss Universe (or is it Miss World?) competition where the interview section is conducted in..wait for it.. English.I felt sorry for the 2nd runner up who was actually Thai. She seemed embarrassed as she couldn't speak good English, why the ###### should she?Unbelievable, eh?
Next dumb question!
they have translators for you...

>What is Thanksgiving, and why do we have to wait for that to pass before >preparing for Xmas?
Thanksgiving is an american holiday that occurs on the last thursday of November to express/celebrate the thanks the Pilgrims had for the Native Americans that helped them out. Traditionally x-mas decorations, goodies, and especially marketing didn't start until after Thanksgiving. Now, stuff was out well before Halloween (I'm in Michigan, USA).

Too bad most people outside Thailand don't get exposed to some of my favs:
cow mun gai - when prepared well, not at Carrefour, same for the rest
cow soy - favorite noodle dish ever, from anywhere
nam prik ong w/ sticky rice
generally I like norhtern food the most, maybe cause I'm from there and it's not readily available in the US
And this isn't even mentioning desert!! yummy yummy
