I remember in the seventies the exchange rate was about 23 baht to the dollar. I survived fine. Now its about 31 baht to the dollar so better. In 2005 I believe it was 40 to 1. Of course prices aren't the same but neither is my US income. I feel for the Brits because many came here when the exchange was much better but maybe lack enough resources to weather the storm. I think that Thailand was heavily promoted in the UK as a place to retire cheaply. It was but isn't as much so anymore.
For me its still much more affordable than California. As well as much safer.
Yes and Brit pension is frozen in Thailand at the amount when they move there; better place is Philippines as even it is not an ex commonwealth country by a special agreement the pension is not frozen.

We know from other reports already that for an IO to say "you have been here more than 180 days" they count whatever way suits their needs. Maybe last 12 months, maybe last year, maybe last two years. It doesn't matter because there is no 180 days limit anyway, they just try to make something up.
Thai consulate in Paris doesn’t deliver you a tourist visa if you have been in Thailand already 180 days in 12 months rolling period, even if there is no rule about that and it’s not new .

I have kept in touch with some of the other guys who were here before. One Australian guy detained also came in on a 60 day tourist vista he got from KL embassy. He lived in Aus and had not even visited Thailand in years. He had booked rooms for the whole time, etc. When returning his passport , it had a letter saying he could not stay because he had "insufficient funds" Well, he had had to show his bank balance in KL to get the visa, and had never been asked here to provide them again. They just essentially made up a reason to boot him. Just like with me- insisting I was going to come back to work illegally with zero justification for saying this.
In the end , they can not allow an embassy to say you are acceptable for a visa , then have different rules here at the airport.
Yeah wisperone- I meant my tourist dollars for life. In the short term, the money I would have spent here will now be going into the hands of Filipinos mostly
10k baths must be show in cash
I am actually in Philippines but yes when you are in the country renewing visa is easy but at immigration Mactan Cebu airport even with a 59 days visa from Philippines Consulat in Paris I was scrutinize and interview never happen to me in Thailand where I plan to go back.

I found the embassy in Paris very amicable. I went in for a tourist visa and he recomended a non immo visa, I told him I didn't have sufficient funds to show, he said don't worry about it and gave me the non immo visa.
You kidding

There is a particularity at Thai Embassy in Paris if you have stay in LOS during 90 days and come back France they will not deliver a Tourist Visa before you have stay 90 days in France .
So yes Visa exemption is the best way you can use.

You cannot do it.
You can only get private insurance by paying a substantial amount of money for it.

Just got my Thai vehicle drivers License in Issan. I needed documentation of where I reside in Thailand, Doctors note,International Drivers License,USA drivers license and a passport. I didn't have to take a exam, listen to a several hour speech or a driving test.
I had to take the color test (red, green, yellow) and a reaction test(brake and acceleration reaction).Because I had a METV I needed my GF to sign as a guaranty.
This License is valid for 2 years. After 2 years I will get a 5 year renewal .
I needed the residence form from the IO even though I don't reside permanently in the Thai province( I have a METV) . Since you don't reside full time in Thailand you might need a guarantor(A Thai person vouch for you).
No need guarantor for me an visa exempt but for renew you will not get a 5 years one without a longstay visa

Embassy in Paris allow only 2 stay of 3months by year with 3 months out of Thailand between 2 stay. So if you back back France after a stay of 5 months in Thailand using VE and TV from nearby consulate your application for new TV will be denied

Ah, I didn't know where he was. Good point. There is an airport there, how about a cheap return flight somewhere then? Just trying to be helpful! I mean an under 2000 baht return out-of-country somewhere/anywhere?
The airport is flooded too

I just came back from the DLT at Bangchak.
Just a few recommendations for Europeans.
If you have a driving license from Europe - even the latest credit card size model - you will have to get an English translation of your license.
Pretty ridiculous, because like 95% of everything written on the driving license is either a name, a number (dates) or a pictogram. Only some standard words like "name", "surname", "date of birth" etc. could be in French, Italian, Dutch or whatever. Also, there are about 700.000.000 Europeans, so you would think that after seeing a few thousands of European model driving licenses, they would accept that we all use the same model. No need to translate "naam" in "name"...
Anyway, I thought I could overcome this obstacle by presenting them - together with my (European model) national driving license - a valid International Driving License. Everything in English, everybody happy. Nope. My valid international driving license was a license following an international convention of 1968.
"Aha, but Thailand only recognized a 1949 international convention." "Yes but you can see this one is in English and exactly the same as my European." "Yes but I cannot accept."
So, you'll have to ask your embassy to give you a list of approved translators. Have your national license translated in English (NOT in Thai) by one of their approved translators, and get your embassy to stamp and sign the translation (no formal legalization; normally free of charge).
As for the certificate of residence, you can get this at immigration or at your embassy. If you get it at your embassy and you still have your domicile in your home country, they can only legalize an affidavit (like a legally binding declaration by which you declare living at a certain address). Ask them to put the legalization formula on the front of the document. If it is a kind of "sticker" they attach to the backside of the document (like in my case), you could be sent back to your embassy because there is no signature or embassy stamp on the frontside.
More info about the procedure at Bangchak: http://www.adventurefamilylife.com/expat-guide-thai-drivers-license/
Depends where you apply and who is behind the booth requirement today will be not same tomorrow .

Yes, I agree that would be a good idea to get the data uploaded instantly.
However, what we don't know is if the meter reader unit is even online with 3G/4G.
I think the original system required them to upload manually at the end of the day. Whether there's a more updated system I wouldn't know.
As the OP, my point about convenience stores accepting payment as soon as the bill has been issued still stands.
As blackcab said:
"Because one is a government agency that has no interest in customer service or efficiency and the other is an extremely switched on company that is ruthlessly efficient. "
My ex gf was checking meter as subcontractor for electric company in Nakhon Si Thammarat data are enter manually by subcontractor in computer of electric company with a picture of the meter in jpg file as proof of reality of number and work really done . So it’s depends of the efficiency of the subcontractor.

A single Non Imm O Visa obtained from a Thai Embassy/Consulate
or:
A multi entry Non Imm O Visa obtained from a Thai Embassy/Consulate
or:
An extension of stay based on retirement obtained from an Immigration office.
its impossible to give a correct answer
