    Dear Naam

that's the best prediction i have herd on this forum in a long time.. :D

  2. in general Forigners are not allowed to own land in thailand.

assuming that the land was bought under a company name.. there is no way that his name will show up at the land office. and its a waste of time getting a lawyer to look it up there.

i suggest you look at the department of business and try and find out if he was registered as a share holder in any thai company. this is public record and should not be a problem to inquire. there is a website for that but it is in thai.

if you have found him to be share holder then you can check through the department who is the law firm / accounting firm that registered The company and through them make a calim on behalf of the legal inheritors.

  3. Say for instance Seatran Ferry was the only ferry company to the island and they decided to charge 1000 baht per person? Would You agree with that pricing system? Can the Island really afford to allow one business man to fundamentally hold the island to ransom and charge what ever he sees fit to fly to the island. Believe me if there was only one bar on the island a beer would not be 80 or 90 baht a bottle. they are operating a monopoly with the aid of very powerful people in Bangkok who neither care or have any interest in Samui and it's economic well being. The island has been kidnapped - plain and simple. Profit is fine but highway robbery is not.

but this is really not the case now is it?

i agree with you that competition is good . but no one is blocking it.. no body is holding anyone ransom. you can apply for a permit to build your own airport.

if the government of Thailand wants to build a second airport, which a few years ago they did then they need to allocate the budget for it, which at this moment they don't have.

if Samui city feels that they need a second airport they can allocate a budget for it maybe by charging all the resort and hotels and tourist services providers a very large tax that will provide for construction and the maintenance and operations of an international airport (well some one has to pay for it )..and then they will run it as a government non profit organization.. and landing fees and refueling will be much cheaper then bkk air... do you think that's viable??

    now for some facts.

on the contrary to popular belief the aiport is not owned by Bangkok airways it is owned by a separate company named SCI assets .. it is also traded o the set and is a public company..the connection is that the same owner Dr prasert control both companies.

since they are doing well you should conside investing in this company because in the foreseeable future they will remain the only airport in Samui ..

the samui airport was funded using the Samui Airport fund which is an investment fund where the people who invested money expect to make a profit and they expect to make a really good profit :)

the landing fees are controlled and capped buy the department of civil aviation...

    more info here : http://www.samuiairportpropertyfund.com/en/index.asp

now if any of the members who feel that they can do better then the ones who are controlling the airport at this moment then buy all the stocks of the company and then you can control the airport and its services....

then you can decide o your own to loose profits or even give airlines free landing... :D

  4. I visited Samui first in 1982, Nathon pier was made of bamboo and coconut trunks.

I have now lived here for around 14 or so years, since 1995.

I have not really noticed that much change since 1982.

Some new roads and piers and stuff, a few more people. But it is still Samui.

What I mean is that Samui has changed no more than the rest of the world and why should Samui not move ahead/backward like the rest of the world?

Strewth, the whole world was totally 1982 style back in 1982 but now it's, like, 2009 style.

    Wow!

PS: The more things change the more they stay the same (or whatever it is the smart folks say)

so true... i agree with you 100%

  5. I'm sorry, but I find many of attitudes on here puzzling. IMO, it is all just more Thai-bashing from Westerners who feel that all of Thailand should bow and scrape to them.

The woman in question ran from the police during questioning, resisted arrest, and then verbally abused the chief-of-police. In the USA, where I am from, any of these crimes carry serious charges. But in Thailand, where the Westerner is to be worshipped at all cost because all Thais should be whores to the tourist dollar (regardless of their station), the Thais are awful for detaining her while they decide how to handle this case and what charges to press.

In the end, it will probably be a small fine and no jail time just as with the Burroughs case (and in his case he abused and threatened airport security and immigration personnel which would also be a big crime in the US). That is not a big punishment to pay considering the circumstances. The woman from Australia is the one who made a petty problem very serious by her actions. Consider in your home country what would happen if you fled the police, resisted arrest, and verbally abused the cheif-of-police. But in Thailand, tourists should be able to do whatever it is they want according to the reasoning of some.

I DO agree that Thailand has endemic problems with police corruption, and criminal justice can be a twisted thing in LOS. However, in this case, I think the Thai authorities are within their rights. What must the Thais think when they are asked to excuse serious crimes for the sake of sucking up to tourists (and, no, I am not talking about a stolen bar mat)? It perputuates the sterotype many Thais have that all Westerners think Thailand and its people should excuse any behaviour and any crime from tourists and Westerners to save face with Westerners and their media.

Many of us know the worst thing one can ever do in Thailand, especially with authorities, is to raise one's voice, especially if verbal abuse is involved. This is NOT a case about a bar prank or a missing bar mat, and it must infuriate Thais that Westerners and their media want to paint it as such. Now the woman and the media are trying to insult the Thais and the Thai authorites involved by conducting a media campaign that makes Thailand look bad for holding someone in such a case (fleeing a police investigation, abuse of police staff). That is not a winning move on her part as she is now just fanning the flames, making a bad situation worse, and hardening the attitudes of the Thai authorities involved.

And had this happened in a Western country to a Thai person (and Thais who travel to other countries would probably never behave in such a manner) that fled police when being questioned and verbally abused the police and their cheif, would all of us be in an uproar? The woman (and any of us) need to learn that one must respect the laws, the authorities, and the customs in ANY country in which we choose to travel, and that being a Western tourist in a devloping country dependent in part upon tourism and tourist money does not give us the freedom to act in whatever manner we like and to break any laws we wish.

JMHO, and presented as another opinion in the face of all the rampant Thailand-bashing in this thread and the "another-nail-in-the-coffin" crowd who frequent the TV forum.

    100% right.

the case is not about the bar mat. the case is about the way she behaved when approached by the police.. she ran from the police during questioning, resisted arrest, and then verbally abused the chief-of-police.

i wonder if a Thai woman in Australia under the same circumstances would be treated differently.

  6. Gator... you could not let it be ..... :)

macaroni man thanks for sharing a story that sheds a positive light that is sometimes so absent in this forum..

What is your love affair with Bangkok Airways???

They have the island by the short and curlies. Plain and simple. This is never smart in any industry.

Today they are operating seven flights with only one full. Yet the still charge ridiculous landing charges essentially denying low cost airlines from operating routes to Samui within their business model. Samui needs tourists of all levels. Not just the perceived high end tourists. I see there are a lot of cheaper flights currently offered on PG, albiet 1000 B or so more expensive than any other route in the country (even at the lowest fare).

They are, like many other misguided individuals under the impression that Samui has somthing extrordinary to offer. I does not! Other than being expensive, dirty and isolated. You can not charge a premium rate for these atributes.

In this current economic climate people are looking for better deals. The combination of expensive airfares with low quality destination does not bode well for the island and it's inhabitants.

i dont have a love affair with BKK air.. i do have a respect for someone else private business.

BKK air has made Samui that is plain and simple..(we can debate if it was good or bad but that not he point here )

they took a very big risk in developing a private airport they invested money and they are now cashing on it.. despite of very bad economic conditions.

they are charging landing fees that enable them to sustain the airport and make a profit.. i know that some people tend to forget that as a private business the aim is to make a profit :D

nce in evry few months this debate comes up and then all the anti bangkok airways flames go up..

i really don't understand why?? why is a private business man investing his money and taking all the risks not allowed to run his business the way he thinks is right??

why is it that people instead of complimenting his success and learning from his venture find it necessary to complain about it??

  7. BKK-Samui with Airbus A319, duration 65min. returnticket incl. taxes 6540 THB

Bkk-Phuket with Airbus A320, duration 85min. returnticket incl. taxes 3340 THB

    in comparison:

    1min. of flight costs 19.65 THB (BKK-Phuket)

    1min. of flight BKK-Samui costs 50.30 THB :)

if they will charge the same rate to Samui as of Phuket, the returnflight (USM) will costs only 2555 THB.

    Funny calculation.....i know :D

    Chayaphum

    nice calculation.

there a few more things to add on..

phuket is a government airport and the government does not care if the airport is making a profit. on the contrary those who invested a sh..t load of money in Samui airport are private share holders who are looking to get the investment back and make a profit.

Samui does not have a road link to the main land so any jet fuel must be brought in by trucks and the cost is higher.

the whole operation of samui airport is private.. it is not govement funded or supported so someone has to pay the bills???

  8. I've always wondered about the rental prices for jet skiis. I mean you can rent a car for 24 hours for the same price you can rent a jet ski for 20 minutes.

Car rental fees usually don't include gasoline costs, but these are obviously included with jet ski rentals.

A typical 2-stroke jet ski will swallow up to 20l/hr of gas at full throttle, about 600 Baht/hr at current local prices. Add to that a very unforgiving (corrosive) sea environment and expensive replacement spare parts, a relatively short lifespan (5 years if lucky), and it's practically impossible to run any jet ski for under 1000baht/hr in running costs.

    What a dumbass, useless invention!

You've obviously have never been on one. The fun factor is unmeasurable, specially away from crowded beaches and/or out in the open sea swells. :D

    :o:D :D

  9. regarding the noise level in this area.

was at the tasaban yesterday and had a look at the zoneing map .

the area of the old monkey theater is purple color ... heavy industry area. so i think the last thing that would bother people is the music from the club.

    Highdiver,

We are talking up on the mountain, not on old soi monkey road.If you drive down soi monkey hevy business consists of one woodwork shop,2 water supply businesses & a smattering of various shops eg: hair salons, convenience stores & laundries.

We are talking about a music venue on the mountain in the midst of a residential area, even they are talking about building villas. So maybe you should take a drive around & have a look. Since when did zoning matter on Samui? Please get real.

    Dear Roo

i know where it is and have been there at the last party 2 nights ago.

i total agree with you that this "sound " is a problem for the neighbors but i think that they will also suffer form the zoning plan of having an industry zone under them.

Check again HD. The area in question falls into the zone of 6.3 and 6.9.

    - Zones 6.1 to 6.11 shall be rural and agricultural areas. Land here is to be used for agricultural purposes, or any activity

relating to agriculture, residence and tourism. In the event that any land is used for other acceptable purposes, then a

maximum of 20% of the whole may be used. The list of prohibited buildings in these zones is more extensive and

includes: buildings for commercial purposes, except as part of a residential development. And they must be no bigger

than 10% of the whole; any residential, commercial or industrial building with a floor space exceeding 2,000 sqm or a

height of over 12m; residential or commercial building purposes, except as part of a residential development and equal to

not more than 10% of the whole; condominiums, apartments or dormitories; or residences in commercial buildings except

as part of a residential development and equal to not more than 10% of the whole.

The rules for all green zones other than zones 6.3 and 6.9 are: a) and

:D as above; c) as above, but with surrounding

space of at least 50%; d), e), and f) as above.

    In Zones 6.3 and 6.9 among the list of prohibited uses are: any purposes of land allotment, except agriculture purposes;

residential purposes, except for single house; and any business which may cause harm to health, under the laws

    regarding public health.

The rules for 6.3 and 6.9 are: a) and

:D as above, but the surrounding space must be at least 60% of the whole; and d)

    as above.

And by the way. By stating that we up in Bophut hills should be more bothered by the industrially zoned area below currently housing Samui Deep Well / A language school / Motorbike repair shop / Laundry etc. etc.. What did you have in mind that might be coming that might be more disturbing than all night music? An all night firework testing facility? A long range all night missile testing facility? Get a life! Of all your posts, both intelligent and otherwise, this has to truly be the least intelligent!

Please note that the regulations under zoning area state that no business should be conducted which may cause " harm to health" I am only guessing but I'm not sure, that loss off human sleep to the local population might be considered as being a " harm to health " If it's not, it should be. It has certainly raised my blood pressure in the past!

we must be looking at different zones then.. i was referring to the land marked as deep Purple color leading from the intersection to wards chaweng. and is marked as 5 and is locted right under the hill that we are referring to as in the 6 range.

if you have a house in area 6 and your neighbor plot is under zone 5 then you will suffer from potential noise of living near an industry zone even if your land is zoned differently.

my point is that those houses will also suffer if they will have a heavy industry zone under them. and it does not have to be a missile testing range. :o:D all it has to be is for 3 big mechanical industry shops running there and that will create a very noisy ambiance.

imagine if you will a wood work shop running the heavy saw all day its not a comfortable feeling..

    Highdiver,

The zoning is up to 100 metres back from the ring road. What heavy industry, besides building work? I do not think for a moment, that you can hear any heavy industry noise from anywhere from the venue you attended.

So by trying to justify their goings on, you are saying well so what if you don't get it from them , you will get it from industry.

Well if you were invited by them , you are obviously on their side. You reasoning here is very flawed I'm afraid to say.

    Definitely a misunderstanding.here.

my response was about the noise level in this area the zoning planing is to allow this area as heavy industry .. so before you go building a house there please be aware of it. if according to the zoning this will be a heavy industry zone then the lat thing there is to worry about is Geko.

i am not in any way promoting or defending Geko, or on their side.. but i still thik they play good music. :o

  11. We live in a country where justice is measured in baht(even for thais but especially for farangs)We live in a country where there is no law that will go on the side of a farang. We live in a country where everything is about saving "face" whether such and such a person is morally right does not enter the equation. To go to such lenghts as this man did might be honorable but foolish if you value your life.

Back home in the west where there is more equality with regards to "the law" i could see the point in standing up for ones principles, but here in thailand "morals and rightness of ones actions" account for very little and will usually end in violence or death.

For westerners taking a stand like this is honorable but pointless if it turns out you are just going to be shot for your trouble.I hope the man recovers, and realises he is one lucky person to have survived.

i think you may be unaware or reluctant to believe but in the west in most western countries it is the same.

the frustration form this violent act that i so strongly appose is taken by some poster (as you have as well )to be a :Thai thing" or as a unique to Thailand. in my opinion it is not.

in every country you have those who avoid the law.. in every country the legal system is manipulated. some countries cover this up better then Thailand but they are still rotten legally just as the next country.

we may debate this issue for ever and give examples on both sides of the debate but at the end of the day Thailand legal system is not less nor more "equlity" then other countries.

in most countries that i have been to the night life business and specially parties are very lucrative and usually involve a large turn over in cash.. these business are controlled and owned by people who are very intolerable when it comes to anyone affecting or objecting to them... and this is not limited to Thailand.

in my opinion the lesson to be learn here is that when you set out for a public crusade that has effects on someone's income that person may retaliate in a violent manor.

it is unfortunate that this happened, as this person was doing something he believed in for a purpose he believed in.. i wish this guy a speedy recovery and hope that he will be well..

Zones 3.1 to 3.11 (purple color): high-density residential and commercial areas. Land here will be used predominately for commerce, residential and tourism purposes. And land used for other purposes must not exceed 15%.

i was referring to the land from the main road in deep purple color defined as area 5.1

this land is from the bopud intersection for 1 km along the road and 600 meters into the mountain area.

this area is designated as hevy industry zone and it will effect noise and pollution levels on bordering plots as well.
