  1. I am looking for a leather shop (where they make things out of leather and perhaps sell pieces of leather)  that has recently moved to somewhere in Saraphii area.    The shop used to be located near the Superhighway bridge that is between the Airport plaza intersection and the CM - Lamphun road intersection.   The bridge crosses over the Mae Ping river and there is also a narrow but quite busy road that goes under that bridge.  The Leathershop used to be located next to the bridge along the road that passes under that bridge.

The shop owner next door said that this little Leathershop moved to Saraphii, but he wasn't sure where.   Does anyone happen to know where they moved, or perhaps you know of another leather shop in Chiang Mai?

I am hoping acquire a piece of leather for a project.

  2. This is nothing new. It has been going on for several years in Chiang Mai. I thought it was acceptable. Where do people think there money is going to go if someone doesn't take it out of the Krathong? If Thai people think it's a problem then they need to make an issue of it, There are plenty of law enforcement officers out on the streets in the evenings. Besides that, a few rocks or fireworks sent in his direction may communicate to him that he needs to move down stream a ways if he doesn't listen to their verbal requests.....again, a situation that Thai citizens could be really good at handling.

  3. This sounds reasonable to me. Parking lots and open areas are safer places to learn for inexperienced drivers. Keep in mind that there are no "learners licenses here. The "drivers education training" purpose is to prepare you for the driving test and get your license. You will not be a competent driver if this is the only driving experience you have before taking the test. I chose to teach my son to drive here. I went to a location where others were learning to drive (including driving schools) on an open piece of land. The "road" was all dirt, but they created "intersections" and some inclines etc, to give the student opportunity to practice their driving skills, clutch, braking, watching for other traffic at intersections etc. I thought it was a good setting because there were several vehicles there much of the time. Scary thing is that, of course, all the drivers there are practicing as well, so inexperienced.

I made an agreement with my son. We practiced for the drivers test "in the parking lot etc" so that he could pass his drivers license. After he received his license, he was considered "legal" to drive on the road, but not confident. So i was always with him when he drove for the next approx 10. Some people may need more or less time to gain that actual road experience. Now three years later, he has expressed that he would not have been dangerous on the road. He is thankful that he received additional guidance and instructions. There were several occasions where i had to grab the steering wheel, preventing an accident. In my passport country the instructor will not pass a student driver if they still require help with their driving. I encourage you to go along with your loved one after they have passed their license and help them become competent and defensive drivers.

  4. Thank you for your responses. Most of you were kind and your comments were well intended. The Post Office i am referring to is the one between Kad Farang and Hangdong City limits.

At least two more pieces of mail have not appeared just in the last couple weeks, birthday cards this time. We are getting really tired of not having received a single card since September last year, and during this time 4 of the 5 of us have had birthdays. Of course the only mail we know has not arrived is what senders have told us they put in the mail. They contact us because they wonder if we received their card.

In the near future, I will likely get another PO Box at one of the main post offices downtown. Over a period of a few months, this will reveal if the problem is local or broader.

I am thinking of paying a respectful visit to the Manager of the Hangdong Post office (between Kad Farang and Hangdong city limits). I plan to take my whole family with me. If you want to join me and my family at this Post Office please let me know. I speak Thai sufficiently to express concerns adequately, but if you have a thai spouse who could help represent our group and can speak from personal experience as well,, that would be great. I don't expect to make a lot of progress, but if the problem is local it may change some behavior.

A couple of you mentioned the "Hangdong" Post Office across from Toyota Nakhorn Ping. I go there from time to time. From my experience, they do a pretty amazing job considering the volume of mail that they process compared to the amount of staff they seem to employ there. I have not had a negative experience there that would warrant a complaint.

The Post office that i am talking about is also a small Post office but their employees behind the counter tend to be VERY slow. The long lines build because of the slow processing speed.

  5. The whole city of Chiang Mai has never been without power at the same time. There have been large areas without power, but never the whole city or a whole province. You have to live in places like eastern USA to experience power outages that cover several states and 1-3 weeks without power. Here you will usually have power within a few minutes to 8 hours. SMILE

  6. Relax and go to with the flow. Power outages happen from time to time. If you are prepared it helps.

Plan ahead, purchase a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) for your computer. if you want internet service during a power outage, plug your router into a UPS as well. Have flashlight or other light device handy in case the power goes off at night time, and enjoy a change of plans.

if you are concerned about a potential power outage this time of year, turn off your air-conditioner. You are having a part in over taxing the transformer in your local area.. A lot of people are running their air-conditioners these days because of the heat and the transformers are on overload. The big fuses on the power poles blow from time to time.

What do I do? If there is a power outage during the day, I like to find a shady spot outside, get my lawn chair out and make myself comfortable with a book. After dark, i find a flashlight, open the windows,, by-pass the water-pump so i have running water downstairs at least and then i sit down with a book .....or we play a game as a family. My kids enjoy the adventure. Enjoy and Relax.

  7. I am not asking for a discussion about tracking numbers. International tracking is another issue. Someone can start another discussion on that if they want to.

I will summarize here the questions that i posted above.

I wonder if anyone else has experienced such trouble in recent months? (at the Hangdong Post Office)

Does anyone know where mail is sorted before it is delivered to the Hangdong Post office?

Is there a central post office in Chiang Mai where all the mail goes before it is distributed to surrounding areas?

  8. I seem to have mail consistently disappearing before it arrives in my mailbox at the Hangdong Post Office. Since September 2014 i know of 4 pieces of mail, in this case letters, that have not arrived. i have gone to the post office and inquired about the possibility of unclaimed mail being there, but they denied having any such thing. The mail that never arrived was sent by people who have sent mail before and it arrived without any trouble. The mail was sent from different countries, Canada and USA, and different Post Offices there. I believe the mail is disappearing after it arrives in TH. I have been here for many years and have experienced one or two letters / packages not arriving. I just figured that i need to leave room for human error. This however seems to be a consistent problem. It's difficult to send gifts by email attachment.. I wonder if anyone else has experienced such trouble in recent months? Does anyone know where mail is sorted before it is delivered to the Hangdong Post office? is there a central post office in Chiang Mai where all the mail goes before it is distributed to surrounding areas?
