  1. Hi,

Thanks a lot for your input autonomous.

im a total newbie in lunux...

i tried the mount but had problems

    [root@localhost xxx]# mount -o loop,ro corupt.img /mnt/tmp
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
    [root@localhost xxx]# mount -o loop,ro -t ext3 corupt.img /mnt/tmp
mount: mount point /mnt/tmp does not exist
    [root@localhost xxx]# mkdir /mnt/tmp
    [root@localhost xxx]# mount -o loop,ro -t ext3 corupt.img /mnt/tmp
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0,
       missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so

    [root@localhost xxx]#

I dont have a spare internal bay to test the smart. my spare pc wont accept notebook hdds too...

i tried an application on windows(spare machine, damaged hdd connected via USB ) called Nucleus kernel linux and it was able to recover my files... apparently all of my files.

My attempt to restore evolution data suceeded but only to a point.

    reference : http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2005/12/03/how...ckup-evolution/

    i copied

    1. ~/.evolution/

    2. ~/.gconf/apps/evolution/

    3. ~/.gnome2_private/Evolution

from old hdd to the new one. evolution started fine. mail accounts werent there...but emails and filters were in place. i added one of the mail accounts did a send and recieve ...everything ok.

now when i start evolution again it says sorting(in status bar) forever! it fast until 86% then sort of hangs..... is this a possible indicator of file corruption?

    Is there a fix?

  2. Ive been using FC5 on my sony vaio and yesterday my main linux partition crashed.

while using the computer, the hdd starting making some strange noise and it hung. on hard reboot it boots up very slow and on trying to log in it gives some error about unable to find /home

i replaced the hard disk. and installed FC5 on a new hard disk.

the corupt hdd i attached on a USB connector.

I can only see the /boot partation.

The volume manager shows me the main partation as unused space.

i used dd to make image of the corupt data.

    dd if=/dev/sda7 of=~/corupt.img

it made a 19 GB(the corrupt partitio's size) file in my home directory.

I greped out the most important text file i had.

Before anyone starts lecturing me about backups id like to recover more stuff...

evolution data files(most important), firefox profile, some bash scripts in my /home

Is there any professional service in thailand who can recover data off ext3 partition? im in a hurry.

in the mean time im trying out the various applications available for windows on a spare windows box, but i think its going to take time, no luck yet.

    Looking forward to some help.

  3. HAT YAI: -- Five people were killed and about 60 injured in a series of six explosions in Hat Yai's business centre last night. The blasts went off at two shopping malls, one of the city's biggest hotels and three other locations.

Witnesses said the bombs went off at roughly five-minute intervals starting at around 9pm, when the area was crowded with tourists and locals going out to dine and for night entertainment.

Two of the dead were foreigners - one Chinese and one Westerner. The injured were sent to nearby hospitals including Raj Yindee Hospital, Krungthep-Hadyai Hospital and Songkhla Nakharin Hospital.

The first bomb to go off was on Thammanoon Withi Road, at the entrance to a pub called Deep Wonder in the basement of the Odean Shopping Mall. The second bomb went off at a junction a few hundred metres down the road, and the third one another few hundred metres on.

The fourth bomb went off in front of the Lee Garden Hotel, destroying tuk-tuks parked there.

The fifth explosion was at the Big C Supercentre and the last was in a restroom of a movie theatre on the fifth floor of Diana Shopping Centre.

The bombs damaged a numbers of cars and motorcycles in the vicinity.

Police said each blast had a radius of 20 metres and that they had found pieces of metal suspected to be part of the bombs.

Officials believe the bomb at the Odean Shopping Mall was planted inside a motorcycle and detonated by mobile phone. Soon after the explosions, all unattended motorcycles nearby were moved away and people were evacuated from the area for fear of more explosions.

Thammanoonwithi Road is one of the most crowded roads in Hat Yai City, with more than 10 hotels along its length. More than 1,000 tourists, both Thais and foreigners, were checked in at the hotels. All were evacuated.

Senior Police Officer Ongkorn Thongprasom said police had received reports that such bomb attacks were likely between September 16 and 20.

"After this bombing, we have to seriously discuss security measures for the area. For sure, the impact on tourism will be large," he said.

Just two weeks ago, intelligence officials predicted stronger, more vigorous attacks by militants in the deep South between September 16 and 20 since this is the week to celebrate the setting up of the Pattani Islamic Mujahideen and Pattani State.

Srisompob Jitpiromsri, an academic who studies trends in the insurgency, said after a spate of bombings in Yala two weeks ago that the insurgents would continue to "show their force" through more coordinated, simultaneous attacks.

  4. To have adsl coverage in your area, the ISP you intend to use should have their Optical fibre connection to the telephone exchange and also host their DSLAM at the exchange.

It is possible true and others have not reliased the potential of your area and buddy has?

I notice Buddy is advertising very aggresively. everywhere i look i see buddy.

  5. Yep thats the downside of RAC.

However of you can go thru ~$500 worth of jobs at indian rates (and got good ratings), then you will get expensive projects (>$1000/job). The people who are getting expensive job done wont bother paying 1500 to a coder with good reputation even if an unreputated one agrees to do it for $1000.

On the other hand, a job might be rejected to a reputed coder @ $55 because an unreputated coder is willing to do it at $50

  6. used rentacoder as both a buyer and coder.

    As a coder i rate rent a coder 9 out of 10

As a buyer i rate it 6 out of 10 <-- many coders simply waste time there

I dont do RAC coding seriously, just explored it out of curousity.

But if you want to it your living you will have to do cheap projects for a few months, provide good code, build a good ranking, only then you can think for the expensive profitable projects.

  7. there is a web applocation called torrent flux (google it) you can easily install it on a server and monitor/controll it from a browser on your pc.

Used it in past to download (err legitimate stuff ) via BT.

the problem is if you downloaded pirated stuff (which you shouldnt anyways) you may be cought as the server would most likely have a static IP.

  8. If you encounter such viruses, make a note of the name of the virus and search for removal tools/instructions. For most virus which manage to get thru anti viruses, there are detailed instructions available on the web on how to get rid of them completely.

  9. well...couldnt get the solution after googling for hours....what i did was free up disk space...resize partation and load FC5. its up and runing and im very happy....

the power icon even tells me the battery status of my logitech wireless keyboard...amazing....

the yum updates takes too long to update all packages to the latest its about 500 MB download....!

are there any local(in thailand/asia) repositories? If so how do i add them?

  10. i just checked my notebooks BIOS. There is no way to boot directly from a USB drive.

Is there a way to make a custom bootloader on a CDROM which would allow me to boot from the USB drive?

A friend told me id need a small USB compatible linux kernal on a bootable CD which would load the USB disk and boot from it then?

  11. I am thinking of instaling FC5 on a spare 20 GB USB drive. I have read that vaio's are compatible with FC5.

My intention is to learn a bit of shell scripting...be more friendly with linux commands...etc...and use to avoid a corporate junk forced onto me. (sony doesnt/or didnt sell VAIO without windows xp pro)

The main question i have in my mind is will the linux instalation mess up anything on my main disk?

What i want to be able to do is choose from the BIOS wether i want to boot from the USB disk(FC5) or the internal HDD(windows xp pro).

I need to be able to mount the internal disk while on linux copy stuff.

My main concern is messing up my current windows instalation untill i am sure about linux. I may play around some distributions in the begining.

    Any pointers?

  12. Hi Whitey and thanks a lot for the detailed post, however my intention is not to hide my identity from the websites i am visiting.

My main intention is to block people from sniffing packets in transit to get my passwords and other details.

I need a complete solution where all internet connection from my PC is routed thru the server.

i meen not only HTTP, but also POP, chats, software updates, etc.

after strugling a bit, i finally managed to install freeswan, if anyone has an experience in freeswan, pls inform.. have dozzens of questions on how to get it to work...i couldnt hind a tutorial targeted towards a linux newbie.

  13. Suvarnabhumi Airport set to open on Sept 28

THAI Airways top management confirms date

BANGKOK, June 8 (TNA) - Bangkok's new Suvarnabhumi Airport is now set to open for commercial purposes on September 28, the Transport Ministry announced here on Wednesday.

The opening date of the Suvarnabhumi International Airport was set recently by the government commmittee on management and development of the new airport, Deputies Transport Minister Gen.Chainant Charoensiri and Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai told a press conference after a meeting here Wednesday with the board of directors of Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI), the national flag carrier.

A new committee comprising of representatives of all parties concerned, including Airports of Thailand Public Co., Ltd. (AOT), the Customs Department, the Immigration Bureau, THAI and other international airlines, would also be set up to oversee the relocation of Bangkok's internatonal airport from the Don Muang Airport to the Suvarnabhumi Airport, the two ministers said.

The committee set-up will be complete by June 17 when Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will chair a meeting of all the parties concerned to review all projects and plans involving the Suvarnabhumi Airport, including the remaining construction and decoration works, to ensure that the new airport will be opened as scheduled, according to the ministers.

Gen. Chainant oversees AOT, while Mr. Phumtham supervises THAI.

"Construction and decoration works at the Suvarnabhumi Airport have been nearly complete at the moment. Only some minor works are to be settled over the next four months; so, I can say we're now ready for the opening of the new airport," said Gen. Chainant.

THAI will begin moving its offices from the Don Muang Airport in early September and will completely move to the new airport the night before its opening on September 28, according to the company's top management.

  14. on shell access uname -r returns

    2.6.12.6-xen3_12.1_rhel4.1

    is this kernal 2.6?

it seems freeswan requires to modify the kernal which is not allowed on my system. Any easier solution?
