OK noted many thanks - so I could be a dependent on my wife's retirement visa. The financial conditions are not an issue, any other potential things to be aware of going down this route? And the maximum length of extension for retirement visa is 1 year?

The Elite Visa feels a bit pricey for what it offers, the Investment Visa seems prone to quite a few risks and conditions.

Personally I'll be going with the ED visa leading into an Elite Visa option.

Although pricey the freedom it provides with exit/entries and the simplicity of it far offsets the cost IMO.

I'm 39 and permanently relocating to Thailand this year so ED for 2 years then 5 year Elite x2.

Many will say it's not worth it but money is not an issue for myself either.

Great plan... Move somewhere to "Live" & rely on doing tourist visa runs emoji106.png

Again, it has nothing to do with Money, Elitism whatever! But before moving somewhere, at least have the bottom layer of Maslow's hierarchy of needs boxed off

Edit: Care to share how you get this "2 month Visa" (METV) without 2 x the OP'S friends bank balance & a letter from their employer?

A 6 month METV for an Australian is $245.00 no questions asked. What are the requirements for other countries?

edit: Why not not enroll in a Thai language school and legally stay in the country for 12 months...

I know one thing that I wont live like a handicapped person, i rather just end it. (if I am able) Kinda hard to do if your totally paralyzed. I have no qualms about suicide if need be. That why i like the euthanasia laws in my country.

I used to say the same thing until I was put in the same situation. Super fit, fitness addict to loss of use of left arm (partially repaired through surgery.)

You would be very surprised at what you're prepared to change when you almost lose your life through no fault of your own, I'd be surprised if you'd be prepared to take it after going through what I did.

Did you win the lottery back home? Otherwise how are you able to do this?

A mix of super hard work in my 20's to 30's, wise investment and to top it all off nearly losing my life in a motor vehicle accident. Changes your perspective on quite a few things.

Now I can afford to live quite comfortably anywhere I choose really.

If the child is in Thailand and is a Thai national I don't think a UK court can do anything, and a Thai court is more likely to favour the mother. A heart breaking situation for anyone who wants to be involved and influence his daughters future. I guess the practical solution, if you want to call it that, is to maintain reasonable relations with the mother without putting a strain on your finances ... but don't allow yourself to be bled dry, and all the very best.

Once again, he's still in the U.K.

In thailand simply being listed on a birth certificate as the father .does not automatically make you thre legal father.

The fact that you are not married to your girlfriend may cause you problems here in Thailand.

It qould be better if you coild show you were legally married to your wife at the time your child eas born.

This is not the U.K.  and the rules there do not apply here.

God luck but your assymption she will automatically be better of in the U.K. than here "[n the Jungle" will ot go over well here in Thailand

Youre aware he's actually in the U.K. right now?

  7. they spend all day with their heads in it...............how sad is that!

No different than any other country with access to smart devices. In my country in a major metropolitan city I've lost count of how many people I've seen walk into doors, ladders, onto the road and in front of trams, bicycles and others walking than it really is mind boggling.

Asia in general seems to have a massive love affair with online social media, China, Phillipines, Korea, Japan, Thailand etc.

Not to forget the effect it has had on gen Y in the western world. The amount of hours lost per person would be seriously scary.

  8. Its depends which school you go to. I have first hand knowledge of language schools that will sign you up for 1 year for 30K and take care of each extension for 2K.

Don't have to attend any classes and extensions are taken care of.

I think if you look around and ask you'll find this being offered.

That may of been true in the past. Since late 2014 things have changed a lot.

No more one year extensions for attending language schools only 90 extensions are possible now and after one year of total stay you have to get a new visa to start the year again.

Sorry mate, I'm not trying to start an argument but there are still schools who, for a fee, take care of your 90 day extensions and you do not have to attend classes.

I had a close friend recently sign up and pay for this service (2 weeks ago).

When he walked into the school it was offered immediately as an option.

The point I'm trying to get across is that with this it's technically a 1 year ED visa as you don't have to leave the country

  9. I had a similar experience flying Thai Air out of Melbourne, Australia, to Bangkok last weekend. At check-in the lady (Australian staff) asked me several questions about my passport, visa and 'return' air ticket. I explained I was on a Thai marriage extension with a single re-entry stamp. I had to show her the various stamps. I asked whether there was a new policy for people travelling to Thailand, but she said no, there was nothing new (I'm not so sure).

We had exactly the same thing happen to us. Showed her the METV visa and were questioned regarding length of stay and where our return ticket was.

After contacting a supervisor and conversing for a few minutes we were told no problem and that was it. Ve4y curious....

  10. I found Thaivisa very discouraging whilst I was planning to move here, to the point where I simply stopped reading it because the relentless negativity was so outputting.

After I'd been in Thailand for a while I came back to the site and realised that much of the stuff people post here is laughable nonsense that bears no relation to the Thailand I know, and started finding these forums quite entertaining.

It is a shame though that a site that should be a great resource for those seeking to move to Thailand ends up being so dominated by those with an agenda of negativity.

Absolutely. TV is full of whingey expats that couldn't have fun with a fist full of $50's in a brothel.

The ones that wear getting ripped off, conned, scammed or the like as a badge of honour and then proceed to tar the whole country with their view are the most laughable.

People go on about corruption, oppression etc but these things have little to zero effect on them. They just enjoy joining in the chorus to complain and act hard done by.

Me? TV won't stop me in the slightest. 2017 can't come soon enough!

  11. A huge percentage of the abusive posts the poster wouldn't dream of saying to your face in a social setting.

To me they'd be the guys getting a laugh out of calling Thais that don't grasp English monkeys and cracking themselves up. Or big noting themselves every chance they get when drunk (i.e.: your classic 'I used to be' guy).

If people feel the need to type emotively and uncontrollably in a medium where it is quite easy to stop, take a deep breathe and read over what you typed before posting it, shows they have a poor self image than anything.

  12. @glegelo

The issue is that we are being targeted as foreigners. This having house owners "register us" and documenting our every move and stay required by law to be reported....? You haven't read 1984 I take it.

To the OP, if you have nothing to hide/worry about, just let them find you and don't worry about it. Clearly you're not hiding, so if were important they'd have found you already.

BTW, my guess is this is just a routine check on foreigners staying in the area. Particularly because you're in a relatively out of the way spot. The same thing happened with me as well. They have a passed down initiate to document and confirm where we're all living. Had an officer a couple of times stopping me and documenting on some official sheet where I stayed etc...

No I have not and do not intend to! But I can tell you that we are still laughing in the western world of you guys that ran around like headless chickens, after reading the stuff, and obviously still doing it..... By the way have you found big foot yet???

What in hell,,, for me... who cares... let them check... let them register....I DONT CARE..... I am a falang and they want to keep track of me, that is fine,,, it is their country not mine... and as I said, i would love my swedish I:officers doing the same, even in more extend....

Dont worry, relax, you guys reached the moon, but still afraid of the book 1984....

    Glegolo

Maybe change his username to ParanoidFalang.

Just another 'why do I have to follow the rules?' BS. Grow up and deal with it. Even your home country wants to keep tabs on you i.e.: drivers license, ID cards etc.
