Not relevant to this story but to your question. I'm half Hungarian (mother's side) and have had my DNA sequenced. Most analyses have identified my Hungarian background. I do get a lot of German also, but my paternal grandmother was German. Do remember that the original Hungarians were not an Indo-European people and were ethnically very different from their neighbouring Germans and Slavs. That said, the name given for the deceased does not look at all Hungarian to me...

    Ditlefsen sounds Scandanavian

Makes sense.  Maintain scheduled course and speed whilst considering options.  Fully examine extent of damage and chances of successful landing; whilst considering landing strip and emergency facilities of all available runways - Don Mueang most likely best.  During this time he has also been burning fuel in an attempt to lower the total amount available should things go wrong and a fire breaks out on landing.  Plus it allows time for discussions with HQ and more experienced pilots, and gives time for emergency services to be briefed and ready.

    All ended well.

Good operating procedure. It amazes me the number of prejudiced people on this forum who continue to give negative comment on topics they know nothing about.

    Security

Unfortunately, it always seems too late to upgrade measures after the ghastly deeds done. By far, this is not their fault given that there are so many problems around the world.  And no matter what's put in place to stop terrorism, they always manage to kill innocent people.

All terrorists should get the death sentence same as they impose on their victims.

Remember my friend that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. The Irish know all about this as history will attest!

What a stupid comment. The pilot actually did incredibly well to avoid hitting any homes or killing his passengers.

Why do the ignorant always have something idiotic to say that merely reinforces their prejudice and ignorance? To lose an engine on an approach is a very difficult situation to add to the work load of a landing. It has happened to me and I tell you it's damn scary! It also happened to my cousin on an approach to RAF Luqa in a Canberra. He avoided the nearby school and lost his life for his efforts.

  5. Yes, I have done the same thing back in 2001. I received the training as a present, and thoroughly enjoyed. Was a little disappointed, though, the firewalk , caused a frisson of anxiety amongst many of the attendees, but we spent the whole evening preparing and when it came to the actual event it was a great anti-climax as it was so easy. The previous week-end I attended a spoon bending class in Switzerland, I was utterly amazed when the spoon actually became plastic and bendable for the space of a few seconds. Now that was really exciting!

  6. Interesting that Bae systems an English Company, should treat other UK workers in this way. Is this the way Brexit is going to work? Have you ever tried to find a builder in London? They are usually of Eastern European extraction. What happens now? One thing is for sure life is going to become more expensive in the UK.

Good Riddance to the European Union and all the M.E.P.'s with their sinecures and massive pension plans. Mr & Mrs Kinnock will now have to find another gravy train. Yes, the pound will drop at first but markets will recover.

Hopefully, a drying up of the cheap labour from Poland and Ukraine.

A typical example for you.......Bae Systems in Scotlands Shipyards recently laid off hundreds of Scottish workers....then hired Polish workers at about 6 pound an hour less.....bah.gif

  7. Lots of strange coincidences here. Jo Cox a pro-EU British MP was killed by a right winger anti EU gunman who has been branded a "nutter' by some. In 2003 Anna Lind, Swedish foreign Minister was killed as she was shopping for clothes in a Stockholm Department store as she was due to take part in a televised debate that evening on the eve of a poll as to whether Sweden should adopt the Euro. She was killed by a lone "nutter" who knifed her to death Sounds like a bit of a coincidence here. In both cases polling was suspended as a mark of respect to the dead, and to reduce the emotions of the campaign. Swedes voted to reject the Euro, I wonder if the British will vote to reject the EU?

Yes a tragedy no debate on that. Not many news stations showing her screaming obscenities with her husband on the river Thames at the fishermen. The husbands belief and fact are not the same.

ok, murder is wrong. I didn't know about this, looks a bit different now.
"The day before that, Jo and her husband Brendan and their two children were part of multi-millionaire Bob Geldof’s floating gin palace-led flotilla, on the Thames, from which, on behalf of Stronger In Europe, Geldof led a load of drunken oiks in haranguing and verbally abusing our out-of-work fishermen."
    From https://theholisticworks.com/2016/06/19/the-truth-about-the-late-jo-cox-mp-and-her-husband-brendan/

Her husband supports funding for a military organisation in Syria and had to resign from the charity Save the Children fund in November 2015 over allegations of behaving inappropriately with female members of staff. He denied the allegations, but left anyway.

What looks a bit different - are you implying she brought it on herself?
  8. It must be a big crime , Thailand wake the hell up. Paradise lost.

No, you get it wrong. It's not about the E-cigarettes themselves, which are probably much safer than the ordinary variety which are loaded with health damaging toxins!

It's the tax issue. The Government wants to get money from this product. Thailand is no different from anywhere else.

  9. The estimate is based on a projection that the Thai auto industry will be able to sell around 800,000 units domestically in 2016, compared with this year's estimated of around 750,000 units.

Thai logic at it finest!!! 555

If car prices gone up 14-40% they can sale 50.000 units more???

    Unbelievable!!!

I believe they can be happy if can sell more as 300.000 cars next year!!!

I get the price reduction to be in the region of THB 15,000! (3%) for a car powered by a 1200 CC engine or less. I bought a new Vios last year during a special promotion and got a THB 100,000 reduction in price. I am sure they can have a few more of those to shift stock. However, the second hand car yards seem to be overflowing with vehicles for sale. Maybe it's time to give the second-hand market a boost.

  10. yes we are aware, we just didn't want to mention it in case tourists decided to stay away for their safety.

Well that's going to happen anyway, things are quiet at the moment and Christmas bookings are not very heartening. Ridiculous really, as there are sure to be many more would be "terrorist attackers" in the streets of London, Paris and Frankfurt than there are in Thailand. Just needs a few advisories to go out and high season goes for a burton. I sometimes wonder if rival tourist destinations don't put this stuff out to boost their own touit numbers.

  11. Four things I take from this

    1. The aircraft had a longstanding unresolved fault - why was this not rectified, also why were the crew not aware of the history logs for that aircraft, surely if they had known about this faulty/false alarm they would have just ignored it instead of trying to fix it in the middle of a storm

    2. The autopilot was flying the plane safely regardless of the indicated fault

    3. The co-pilot was unable the fly the plane once the AP was disengaged, seems he wasn't up to it - either poor training or just not good enough, and yes they were probably flying blind in think cloud but the instruments should have told him exactly what was going on

    4. The pilot was unable to regain control because he didn't know how to switch back to him (40secs button push) although 40secs may have been too late anyway

A catalog of errors culminating in disaster

Have we reached the stage now were autopilots are used so much that the actual human pilots are not that great at flying planes

It is very difficult to hand fly a commercial jet in the cruise. I assume they were in the cruise. The slightest manual input can cause instability as the aircraft is usually at the maximum parameters of the flight envelope. A hasty or clumsy movement can precipitate a stall.

  12. This action occurred over a very thin sliver of Turkish territory that juts along Syria. While Turkey may have warned the opposing Russian aircraft- the Turks were a little quick on the trigger. Normal protocol would have been for the Turkish jets to have made visual contact with the Russians and warned them off at that point. Then if the Russians did not leave Turkish air space- the Turks could have fired. The Russians can put a whole lot of heat on the Turks economically as millions of Russian tourists go to Turkey.

As an American, I still say let the Russians have a free hand in Syria fighting ISIS and anyone else that poses a threat. This is better than having American intervention and losing American treasure. Iraq and Afghanistan were enough. Bring the troops home. Syria is a failed state Ever wonder why Switzerland and Norway are wealthy countries- they don't get involved in other countries wars or disputes. Economic strength is much better than being the number one military power.

War is a very profitable business. I feel it is naive of Americans to suppose that the US has set itself up as the noble policeman to the world. The USA inherited the British Empire and has worked hard to extend its sphere of interest, because this gives it access to myriad economic benefits . Syria is very far from a failed state, although certain parties would like very much if it were. Assad has held out for over 4 years. His country was earmarked by the Project of the New American Century for de-stabilisation. Assad's Syria is blocking the completion of the Qatari Natural Gas pipeline to Europe and has to be forced into a position that would mean the pipeline lay protected by Western Interests. This is very similar to Afghanistan in 2001.Moreover, a recent report on Israeli television reveals that large oil deposits have been found in the Golan Heights. The Golan Heights belong to Syria, but have been occupied by Israel ever since the 1967 Six Day War. Israel has pressed the US to give the nod, so they can officially claim the territory as their own. Obama has thus far refused to give in to this demand. The US plays a pivotal role in the Middle-East and is unlikely to relinquish it and send the troops home, because that would be a nice thing to do! All sides are coming together in a very dangerous situation in Syria, which if anyone makes a mistake (Turkey) could result in World War 111.. Remember the saying "Ordo ab Chao". Out of situations like this, order will be imposed. Scary isn't it?

  13. When this is all over and the dust settles then someone is going to have to rebuild all this destroyed infrastructure. It will be interesting to see if some of those dropping bombs indiscriminately will be there to rebuild what they have destroyed.

Somehow, I get the impression that you don't understand the US role in geo-politics. In all cases the US has been looking after its own self interest. Certainly US companies like Brown and Root will be to the fore when rebuilding commences.

  14. Frankly, you have hit the nail on the head! I believe Thailand still knows it needs help in this area. As of 1st January 2016 the ASEAN floodgates are supposedly opening. The Phillippines boasts that it is the second largest English speaking country in the world. Already Thailand employs scores of Phillipinos and Phillipinas as English teachers. Why not replace all the expensive farangs with far cheaper Philippinos? It saves a bucket of money, but the real question is does it solve Thailand's lack of English proficiency?

ASEAN countries, enjoy, no competition here!

  15. I could not agree with you more. I have sadly watched the BBC deteriorate over the years. Once it was noted for truth and honesty, but now just a lot of spin. I think, too, you are spot on in the comparison with Fox News. Nice to see somebody making sense on Thai Visa.

All media is biased, the BBC is no different, contrary to I 'think' the popular belief by many Brits.

In this age of many and various news sources the trick is to accept that they all have bias, but as long as they present fact with biased spin, then we as 'hopefully' intelligent consumers can take the input from multiple sources and sort out the truth from the spin.

The problem of course is when those same consumers regard one source as gospel truth and then the self fulfilling prophesy starts to take hold.

I'm American, so maybe we have a heads start with Fox News, but it appears that the BBC is rapidly going down that same road, albeit with a cloak of impartiality! In some ways much more dangerous than Fox, which makes no bones about it's bias

  16. Russian doesn't seem to want to admit it was a bomb if it turns out it was, which is very possible. I can guess some reasons, but what do you think they are?

Maybe it wasn't a bomb. In this game of smoke and mirrors truth is distorted all the time. Some say the plane was shot down. I don't know! Clearly the US and UK, its biggest ally, know and the Russians are keeping quiet. If it was shot down who would the US and the UK want to protect?

  17. What amazes me is that there actually foreigners living in Thailand on visa exempts only.

Who in their right mind could be bothered having to go to a border every 30 days to stamp in and out. That is no life.

Does anyone know anybody who actually does this?

I don't get why anyone would.

A trip to your local immigration office every 90 days VS a visa run every month???

seems like a no brainer to me

ever wondered why so many expats live near the border?

There is absolutely no point allowing foreigners into your country unless they serve some useful purpose. Namely, they work to contribute to the economy, possibly doing jobs that locals can't or won't do or they pay money via taxation or some form of indirect taxation. Visas are an indirect form of taxation. I exclude tourists from this definition because they stay in hotels and use other services and buy goods, all of which contribute to the economy, but they are short stay. Many countries charge these foreign tourists for their visas which in turn contributes to the economy. Isn't this a basic fact of business life? There is no entitlement simply a call to foreigners to contribute to the country they chose to live in or visit. Isn't that fair enough!

  18. I think there is going to be closer scrutiny of all classes of people staying in Thailand.

Governments use so called terrorist attacks as an excuse to crack down on lots of other things. This precedent was undoubtedly set by the US after 9/11. I doubt Thailand will be any different. Asean border controls theoretically are lifted on January 1st 2016. There is not much talk here, of what that will really mean. If implemented one can expect an influx of people from other Asean countries who will seek employment in lower paid jobs. Lower income foreigners will therefore be less attractive to Thai authorities. Many of these do not pay tax and do not contribute greatly to the Thai economy. They will be encouraged to leave by more stringent visa enforcement and other restrictions. That's how I read it, but hope I am wrong!

  19. u reap what u sow Thailand making its own bed to lie in, everywhere else is so much better, social media has shown it as it is, corrupt, life is cheap, who ever u r. i have property in Surin it can rot away 4 all i care. @never going 2 thailand ever again,it`s a pity the thai people cannot see what the rest of the world can, biggest CIRCUS in the world RIP or RTP same same

yep, ,buying land is the same as paying for stupid Thai visas. Just a waste of money. Thailand gets rich out of our money. We get nothing in return except stamps in passports and thats it.

I was offered 5 rai of land on the grid in Ubon for 100,000 baht (20k /rai) why should i buy it ? its not legally mine to own. a Thai name must go on the title deed. Thais get 5 rai of land for free.... farang gets nothing. No ,thanks !

Thais think we're all fools. They think they can all get rich out of our money and laugh as we sit around in waiting rooms paying for rubber stamps and houses we cant own.

There are ways around some of this but most farangs dont know.

Pretty cheap really. 1 year B for approx THB 7000. 90 days in India costs THB 5000 and an tourist visa to the USA for those who need it pay in excess of THB 5000. Indians, Sri Lankans, Pakistanis and African others have to pay a deposit of £3,500 just to visit Britain. True they get it back when they return but they still have to find it in the first place..
