  1. I thought the keyboard was just a feature of the iPhone that got unlocked, e.g. language support which is already built into the phone and which can be enabled by adding the correct language resources and preferences. It's not a separate app, it's more like a resource pack. That's why I thought they could enable this easily on any jailbroken iPhone. But maybe I am wrong...

I'd agree with nikster - I was amazed how easy it was to enable a new Japanese Emoji keyboard last week:

Last I tried the Thai keyboard hack last year, it seriously screwed up my phone - mind you, that was then.

I assume now that the iPhone is out in Thailand, there is a clean way to do it now!

If anyone knows, please do let us know!

  2. There's an ad in the BK mag I picked up in starbucks for an Alexander Technique teacher, sounds quite genuine. The number given is 087 506 8055.

has anyone had any luck contacting this instructor? I just tried to call the # and there was no answer, left an SMS.

just checking as it's been a year and it would be great to field opinions.

the site provided has this page:

    http://www.alexandertechnique.com/teacher/other/

it does not list any teachers for Bangkok and it would be good to hear if BKK does not come through, if anyone has any recommendation for a particular teacher in Tokyo as I intend to make a trip there on the 8th of April until the 16th!

  3. I have a different question on target with the topic subject - may be a bit off from the thread content itself and I'll just shoot:

What is the most economic way to transfer money out of Thailand to an U.S. bank esp if the transaction amount is relatively small (< 10,000 THB)? I'm looking to avoid large fees esp considering my mindset is I don't pay any fees to transfer small amounts to Thailand.

  4. After being in Thailand for a few years I'd add the following 3 differentiators:

    • online banking - this become a key one if you're used to state-of-the-art systems overseas. I've had really poor experiences with Bangkok Bank's system and got pretty fed up when I gave it a best effort to communicate defects they had in a production system and not fixing them. Things might have changed in the past year but I was also irked that it was required to use Internet Explorer instead of a more universal browser like Firefox.
    • online customer service - if you're used to good online service, this can vary quite a bit - as least from my end, my theory is these support system range from case-driven systems to a staff that just monitors a joint inbox - so the level of integrity you'll get to your support request will vary!
    • issue tracking - related to customer service, what I have found to be the case in Thailand quite a bit is that it takes something from the side of the organization to instill a culture of taking accountability and ownership of an issue (regardless of how well its tracked) - some reps just throw the ball back in your court and some make promises and don't get back to you (or more realistically get back to you, don't resolve it completely, and don't get back to you!) This phenomenon is clearly not just limited to banks (nor to Thailand technically!)

i haven't had a problem with basic ATM service and withdrawals/deposits in general.

  5. Maybe people in general are a little too quick to jump on others who maybe have less fortunate lives than themselves. Money certainly comes into it , but not neccessarily greed. I would imagine those desperate enough to smuggle would use up the money they gain from the smuggling quite quickly, as opposed to greed which suggests they don't need the money but are committing a crime in order to bolster their already bulging bank accounts.

amen! for those who haven't seen it - go grab a copy of the movie Maria Full of Grace and you'll definitely get this point a bit more - it was the first time I'd ever known people did sh*t like this (ahem no pun intended)

you'll also get a peek at what it takes to down them nuggets! :o

  6. First California and now here, I'm in heaven!!!

California does not permit smoking in bar & clubs.

Am I correct that dance clubs (like those on RCA) are not included in this ban in Thailand?

dancing is a form of aerobic exercise and what will really make my day is the day I can dance free of 2nd hand smoke!

this is a promising step forward nonetheless and happy to see such progress!

  7. I dealt with Google downtime last year and for any of you that can access your acct for just a few minutes, don't forget you can fwd your email to a yahoo acct. it's pretty much what i have set up and when sh*t hits the fan, i use Yahoo! Mail as a backup, at minimum, to check my email. I say this cuz unless you have a Yahoo! Plus acct, you won't be able to reply with an alternate address. If you do reply, you may get a bit of divergence you can clean up later.

btw, didn't see anyone reply in regards to why google's servers are so hard to reach - from my perspective, there's no free lunch - Google may be free but you get what you paid for and really surprised Yahoo! servers have come through twice in one year!

  8. "Roughly 10:00PM" for channel 11 English news is correct: sometimes 9:30, sometimes 9:45; sometimes 10:00; and often pre-empted. Nation Channel has a better English program at 8:30PM (and on time) 7 nights a week.

roughly 10PM on channel 11 is right - after all this discussion, I finally caught the tail end of English-spoken news a few weeks ago and haven't been able to catch it since.

What I found most entertaining was the attempt the male newscaster attempted to crack jokes that just didn't quite land and the female newscaster trying to go along with it and she was clearly like "whatever!"

that interaction was worth the time alone :o

  9. thanks for the replies everyone! I tend to go to sleep by 9:30 so it's been a miss for me so far but will make a point to check it out.

Nation Channel has a better English program at 8:30PM (and on time) 7 nights a week.

am I correct in assuming this is cable?

8:30 sure would be dandy! I'll start flipping through channels in 15 minutes...

  10. just got a TV and taking on improving my Thai this way :o

my girlfriend says there are English news shows.

I'm looking to kill two birds with one stone - does anyone know of a TV guide available in print or preferrably on the web?

preferably in English but if Thai is all that exists, it'll do.

worst case, if you know when the English news shows (public not cable) are broadcast - this'll do short term!

  11. I was using MS Outlook and Yahoo! Mail Plus for a few years. When I made the switch to Mac OS X, I kicked the habit (not to mention started using a genuine OS!) and been using GoogleMail for over 4 months straight now. Sure there are some plug-ins I miss from my Outlook days but all in all, I really don't look back and would love to chat with others interested in figuring out how to make GoogleMail do interesting things with the API they provide!
