  1. I was talking to a friend of mine last week who mentioned the "Thai Family Book",he seemed to know a little about the reason to have one or be placed on one.

I am married legally to a Thai lady, officially, and would like to know the ins and outs, pitfalls benefite ,is it worth it,does it make any difference to your status ie immigration visa etc etc.

Any info would be informative anyway.

    Thanks KC

  2. What's the betting the farang guy does not know she has you,and three children, that's usual for how these people operate.

I really understand how you feel chum, been there done that,as a few more chaps I met along the way.

As previous messages tell you, move on,once betrayed always betrayed, believe me, I moved on,no hesitation, ,have found a good woman, but that doesn't mean it's "until the end of time",keep your options open,as the people of this country do.

Take care and all the best with whatever route you take.

  3. Hi Fellas,

I have just read all the posts re pensions as above.

In my own circumstances,I was told by an ex pat friend of mine, that I could apply for a pension for my Thai wife,I disagreed, but, duly applied.

That was almost 18 months ago now,and still waiting ahem.!!!!

Firstly the DWP sent me,thru a 3rd party in the UK,(my postal address)an application form which I duly completed then returned ASAP as requested by the DWP ,as I may lose pension as the back date is only for three months.(big laughs)

Lo and behold they sent me another application form, with just |Duplicate"on the letter,no letter or reason why.

    Again completed and despatched it,not a word for a further 6 months,so I asked why,by email,complaining as one does.

The next thing I receive is an Email asking me to submit information regarding how long I had been out of the EEC,again I did as they requested.A further few months later still no word, yes,no,maybe anything.

After a further few months I decided to telephone the DWP,asking why all this time had elapsed etc, they told me that they were translating the marriage cert, you can imagine my reaction, without further quotaion.

This was quite a while ago again, now my thoughts it seems ,were right in the first instance, although I did read on this forum a while ago, that it did take one member two years to get what he was entitled to.

    Any comments would be welcome.

    Cheers

  4. I came to live in Thai with my mrs, i dont need a spanish costa type of living, to have a chat with a falang once a month is ok for me, im self sufficient in asmuch that i have an inner happiness of independance, Im not in an ex-pat circle and therefore i dont have to make lame excuses as to why i dont want to go drink with you fellas tonight, I had enough of that in my home country, so here in Thai, i can please myself, and its great!!!

Well said Lickey,I agree whole heartedly with your comments, differing slightly with my thoughts on the majority of ex-pats i have seen in Thailand over the number of years I have lived here.

I cannot understand why they never seem to acknowledge that we are from the same neck of the woods, not even a nod or a grin as a sign of recognition. To me it is a sign of ignorance, lower intelligence,or just the fact that they are terribly unhappy with their lot or worrying how much they are being fleeced for, which we all are aware of,or,should be.

That is why I prefer my own company mainly, although like you I talk to decent guys from time to time, that suits me fine.

    take care

    Cheers

  5. Hi all,

does anyone know if it legal to play the UK lottery online from Thailand.Reason I ask is that I had a message from the UK lottery saying that it is illegal to play online from some countries, but did not specify which countries,if this was the case in the event of a win,Camelot would not be able to pay the winnings through legalities.

I expect some kind of wit in response to this question,as per.

  6. If you were 68 years old as I m Distortedlink,I'm sure you too would be asking the same question as a friend, this OP throws blanks too,so I hardly think I am in a position to have small kids,do you?SOME of us are genuine you know, paranoya comes to mind,!!!!!!

  7. Done it, been there, seen the movie, have the tea shirt.

Parents whose children of UK nationality are living outside of the EEC over a period of 9 weeks no longer qualify for child benefit.

Anyone still receiving child benefit after the 9-week period as mentioned above is claiming money by fraudulent means.

It`s amazing that in many of the threads, it is always a friend in trouble or needs advice, never the actual OPs.

  8. I have a friend who is from the UK,he has two small children together with his Thai wife, they are legally married/registered in Thailand.

He wondered if it was possible to claim Child Benefit from the authorities in the UK,that deal with this situation, and, are there any THAI VISA members in a similar situation, who maybe enlighten him on this subject.

    All replies greatfully received.

    thanks

  9. Dont have my Uk licence and havent taken the Thai test.

Will they hire a car without proof of a licence ?

If so where in the airport chaps ?

Normally st8 in a taxi and pay him for the day , 2 to 3 k inc the trip to patters , but need really to have a decent motor this time

    ideas ?

    thx

definitely no chance,it states in the info for hiring a car, that you need both parts of your licence if you are from the UK.

I know having hired from there before.

advice for anyone hiring a car from the airport, make sure you see that all the damage is recorded particularly the running boards etc,on the underside,on the damage sheet, one of the scams is that the persons receiving the car back after hire, accuse you of causing damage to the underside, they had me first time, and tried it again after returning the car.

    best of luck

  10. Hi all, does anyone know where i can get, buy,or have made,a sidecar for a Honda Wave 125,in the Surin(Isaan) districts,i have a cart which we drag along by the usual Thai method.A sidecar would be a lot more useful, coming from a DIY enthusiast.

  11. Hello all you guys n gals in TLOS,

Any info as to the best way my friend and I can travel from Surin to Nongbualamphu,as I see it,the only way to get there is by car,as public transport is somewhat sparce.

If anyone has done this trip,or somewhere in close proximity to Nongbualamphu.by rail or bus, please could you give us some idea of our best options, time is not of importance really.

We will be in Thailand for some time, in Nov/Dec this year 2006.

    Thank you very much

  12. Hi all, just a warning and inquisition with regard to what happened to my computer after going thru the usual security checks at LHR.The officer at the entry end of the security check asked me if I had a laptop in my bag,to which I replied, yes,he told me that I had to take it out of the bag and place it in a separate tray,as we do with other articles carried.I asked him why this was so and he said,"new government instruction"all went well as I thought, until I came to check if my laptop was ok.The only things that worked was the power light and the hard drive access light, apart from that totally dead, also my memory stick had been completely wiped clean.I took the Laptop PC to see what could be done with it and the tech told me that the hard drive was completely US.

As anyone else experienced the same happenings,I for one won't be taking a laptop through for the same thing to happen, although my digi camera was perfectly ok having gone through the same procedure.

    Best of luck

  13. May I suggest as well that we do keep it to one word (or another specified number) so that we don't have a dictionary thread appearing and everyword can be properly discussed.

Withnail,I agree with what you say, especially the discussion about every word(s) offered, good thinking my friend, well done.

  14. good replies. Would add that right clicking your desktop/settings/advanced and rummage around for a brightness control - depends on the video card if it allows you to brighten up.

I tend not to turn on/off the com, as I believe it wears out faster if I do. But who has done careful methodical research in this? Everyone has an opinion, but I've never seen deliberate independent tests.

I'd not leave a laptop on though. Their cooling systems are not so great, and Particularly in Thailand there is a lot of dust about. The filters will clog up very quickly, and so steadily raise your computer temperature. You should buy a desktop for your home, you only need to spend around 18 000+ on it. Then network the two, and just use the laptop when you are out and about.

Since you say you leave it plugged in and on 24 hours a day, it means that you do not carry it around much. Far better to get a desktop, and just use a small cheaper laptop for when you need it outside of home.

Sounds to me that your screen is shot. Just about any repair on a laptop is mightily expensive.

What I did when my screen went I bought a Laptop that was not usable for normal use, with a good screen, that was over a year ago, still working. It is easy to fix,I am not an electrical engineer, all parts are replaceable with no soldering involved,I got the part from Ebay.£50,much cheaper than repair or replacement costs.

    All the best

  15. be careful! the police jumped on the Jack Golf visa run bus the other morning and removed 3 persons who had overstayed their visas. they were taken to court, dealt with and deported from  the country. however they were not banned and are allowed to re enter the country at any time - funny that as they were on a bloody bus to do just that in the first place!!!!!!!!

I agree whole heartedly with what you say dillon, although I have done a few "visa runs"myself,it is always an iffy situation, naturally, for us and the border guards, even if they are scamming,so it should be too, when all is considered, its not the genuine runners who wreck it,its the ones who exploit and utilise it to their own end.I always feel on edge when I am at any border crossing, let`s face it,we are in their hands,be it good or bad.I think anyone who overstays there visa deserve all they get, with the exception of genuine cases,if I can be there before my visa expires, everyone can.
  16. 'twas a national holiday  :o

Thanks everone, but Istill don`t know "yes"or"no"The name of the University I have since found out is called"Ratmun khun"in Surin, thats the nearest to the name I can come up with. You are probably wondering why I want to know, well, someone told me they had gone to University on that day,me thinking the party had gone to work, wrong, when I arrived there, not at work, they were closed for the day,all kids were walking about, not uniformed. In England all universities close on public holidays, but this is Thailand so I don`t want to make any false accusations,The simple answer would be to phone but I can`t speak much"nit noi"Thai.
  17. Husband came home from work, walks through the door into the hall, where is wife is gazing into the mirror, she turned to her husband and said "the doctor said I have the figure of an eighteen year old,for saying you are fifty two years old".The husband replied with, what did he say about your big fat arse,Oh he never mentioned your name dear!!!

  18. Does anyone know how I can get ESPN sport channel,I have Dmove with 300 channels so they tell me but the only sports channel I can get of interest is Star Sports, all repeat stuff,if you have got genuine info on this,I would be grateful.Thanks.KC

  19. Thanx Thaiflyer, any info is definitely a bonus for me as you will no doubt gather I am new to the game. What I could do with knowing is a reputable English Thai translator in BKK as I`m off there to do a few things,I am sure you will know what I am on about without advertising the fact.

Cheers once again, good site this is,well worth joining.

Keencenturion...........what  the  original  poster  is  asking  is  will  he  ever  get  turned  down  for  a  new  Tourist  visa  if  he  applies  to  a  country  other  than  his  own.

What  you  are  talking  about  is, as  you  rightly  point  out  a  "border  run" for  a  new  30  day  entry  permit.

The  border  at  Aranyaprathet  have  no  say  in  if  you  will  be  turned  down  for  entry  once  you  have  a  Tourist  Visa  in  your  passport  i.e  they  cannot  over  rule  a  Thai  Embassy/Consulate .

You  cannot  re-new  a  Tourist  Visa  at  Aranyaprathet  you  can  however  use  either  the  first  or  subsequent  entries  that  have  been  granted  by  an  Embassy/Consulate  already  on  such  a  visa.

What  you  can  do  is  obtain  a  further  30  day  entry  permit  at  Aranyaprathet  this  is  not  a  visa...............its  this  entry  permit  which  the  Immigration  Officer  at  Aranyaprathet  has  discretion  in  granting .

Welcome  to  Thaivisa  by  the  way.  :)

  20. Norwegian - 32.

I am sure this has been answered someplace either here or on the internet elsewhere but I would like some reassurance from people in the know.

Would one have any trouble getting tourist visas at some point by travelling in and out of Thailand(not back to the home country). Would they suddenly say three is enough? I am planning to be in the region for 11-13 months and really can not see I meet any requirements for other visas than the tourist visa. This would mean I would need 4-5 visas by leaving and reentering. Would this be problematic?

    Cheers

Hello there,I am in the same situation myself so to tell you what I found out this morning from people in the know, when asked how many times you can border hop,or visa run as we know it,the amounts of times you cross the border and back again in the same day,is unlimited to renew your tourists visa.

I did it once at Poipet and about to do it again in the next few days.

Advice if you want it is,go to the Thai Immigration office at the border, have your P/port stamped departed.as you walk towards the Cambodian Immigration Office there which is across the road by about 300 metres you will be greeted by Touts wanting to show you the routine, the easiest way is to let them guide you, costs abit more money. When your P/port has been copleted, usually about 15mins,it will cost you about 1500baht,go immediately across the road and have your P/port stamped departed from Cambodia, then walk back into Thailand and have your P/P stamped as entered, this costs nothing.you will get another 30 days.OK.

    Hope this eases your problem.

  21. General anesthesia involves real risks, particularly outside a hospital setting where they're not equipped to deal with a medical emergency.

I very much suspect that a dentist who's refusing to give you what you want on this is in fact giving you excellent, professional advice.

This is totally not a reply to the above post but does anyone know the costs of dental surgery,ie:-fillings,extractions and so on,I wondered in case I may need it myself. All answers would be welcome.

    Thanx

    KC
