I live in the Netherlands and come to Thailand several months a year.
The only things I need on my laptop:
- Browser (Chrome)
- Read/write documents (Libreoffice)
- Look videos
- Whatsapp
- Facebook
- LineAbout Line I was not sure.
But apparently it works in the Chrome browser.Whatsapp and Facebook I have to try.
Until now this is enough.
Later maybe I need to cast content from my laptop to a TV. But that is not nessecary now. -

Yes, it runs as a plugin to the Chromium browser.
Thank you very much. I just tried it on Chrome (on Windows) and it worked.
So it will be working om Linux.
I did not know an extension existed.

If i was single i could live on 30,000 baht a month, but i'm not........ family eat up whatever is available!
Mortgage - 3000 baht a month (older thai house)
Electric - 2000 baht a month or a bit less
Water - 500 baht a month (M-in-law uses tons)
Gas - 400 baht a month (average)
Funeral plans for inlaws - 1800 baht a month (still haven't collected ?)
Car payments - 6,700 baht a month
Fuel for car and wifes bike - 2000 baht a month
Internet - 800 baht a month
Phones - 700 baht a month
Drrinking water - 100 baht a month
Food and household shopping - 15,000 a month (a lot of mouths to feed)
Eating out 2000 baht a month.
Alcohol - 1, 000 baht a month
Total - 36.000 baht a month. but also Annual costs .......
Car Tax, insurance and service - 16,000 baht
School fees for daughter - 40,000 baht
Typical adhoc house and garden maintenance - 15,000 baht (not including any significant repairs, improvements etc,)
Immigration - visa extension, exit re-entry visas and embassy letter - 7,000 baht
Visit to UK each year (travel costs only counted) - 35,000 baht. (have family commitments there, require one or more visits a year).
Health costs (very variable, mainly dentist) 4,000 baht in last 12 months.
Annual costs - 117,000 baht plus
So i need between 45-50,000 baht a month income to avoid eroding what little savings i have left. Anything else is on top of this .......... Since last year get UK state pension so currently get about 55,000 baht a month, before that i was dipping into savings frequently. Brexit is a threat.
If living in the UK as a family (which i cannot easily do as cannot meet all the requirements for wife's visa) I would struggle to make ends meet due to incredibly high housing costs. As a single person, i would manage comfortably as long as i economised on housing but life would be boring.
Thank you for your contribution.
It gives me good insight.- 1

Thank to the contributors.
I will go to try to live with my girlfriend in Isaan (Buriram province).
6 to 8 month in Thailand, the other months in the Netherlands, so I can keep my Health Insurance. (I am 66 years old.)
But I have to pay for my appartment also. Double expenses. We have build a house wich is not finished yet.
We need to build the kitchen annex, the ouside wall / fence.
And things like airco, freezer, TV etc.
But we can live in the house now.So when that part is settled, we dont have housing expenseses.
My income will be around 2200 Euro. I need 800 for my appartment, taxes, insurance in the Netherlands, so I can spend 1400 Euro (55.000 THB) per month.
Thanks to what I have read untill now, I think we can make it.

Transferwise apparently achieves its cost savings by matching buyers and sellers for a currency pair. How does that work in the case of Thailand where it's only possible to send to Thailand (i.e. buy THB), not send out (sell THB)?
Interesting question.

Nice project!
A few years ago I wanted to cycle the North Sea Cycling Route (6000 km.), but then there were suddenly health problems.
I am getting older now but I still have phantasies to spend a few month to achieve this.
But to be realistic, I think it was a nice dream.Keep us informed about yout trip.
I like the idea. -
I have used TransferWise many times. I sent money from Holland to Thailand.
You can choose if you want to sent an amount of Euros, then TransferWise calculates how many THB that will be.
Or you can say that you want for example send 10.000 THB.
The recipient reveives exactly that amount, so there are no hidden costs for the Thai bank.
When you choose the last option TransferWise will reckon on the safe site, because they are not sure about the exact exchange rate. So they charge you a few Euro extra.
But they always have paid it back after a couple of days.
I think it is very transparant.
A few month ago I had to wait 3 days before my money arrived in Thailand (SCB-bank), but now it arrives almost always on the next day. Not in the weekend of course. -
Thanks for the update. It gives me energy.

I do know an Issan lady who, at the end of a long journey, leaves her car's engine running for 10 minutes to 'cool it down'.
I know an Issan lady who does the same.
When I asked her why she did so, she said: Because it is good.Does anyone know the reason for this practice?

I am a new member and I am exploring this site.
This (the-thai-tunes-I-can't-get-it-out-of-my-head) seems to be an nice topic.
I have some memories too.
Maybe I will post them later.

I follow this topic with interest.
Not because my girlfriend has asked me to buy her a house, but because we talked about building a new house.
She lives now with her mother in a house made of wood and corrugated sheet. Naar Buriram.
The rain leaks through the roof. No bathroom, even no toilet.
Very sad.She already bought a small piece of land (adjacent to her mothers house) and some concrete pillars and wood boards. They are 'sleeping now' (her words) near the old house, waiting to be used.
She told me that with 200.000 THB she could start building a new house (western style) with at least a toilet/bathroom.
Only very basic. I think only a roof and walls. Not more.
Then slowly, every time when there is some money again, she can make some improvements. She knows someone from the village who can build the house. (Same one who has built the house for her father.)
I am seriously thinking of giving her this money. (By the way, she did not ask me for it.)
It is sure a lot of money for me, but I am not broke when I give it away.
And more important, mother and daughter can have a decent life.
They are both good peaple, so far I know. That is why I am following this topic.
Also because there are some answers regarding the prices of houses.
