Due to the circumstances in which I would be leaving the school/program, I doubt I would be able to obtain the necessary cancellation letter. Would I be less likely to encounter this issue at a different border crossing, for example, Chiang Khong? Are there any border crossings into Laos that would most likely be more lenient about letting me out?

I am currently in Thailand on a single-entry ED visa, which I would need to "reextend" at the immigration office in March. However, I am considering leaving the program and school that are sponsoring my visa. I would like to stay in Thailand for another three or for months, but would not want to attempt to do so on the technically invalid ED visa.

Thus, I have been considering leaving Thailand through Nong Khai in order to apply for a double-entry 60 day visa in Vientiane. Will I have issues leaving with the unexpired ED visa, or when applying for the tourist visa in Vientiane? If anyone has done something like this before, or has any better suggestions for how to do this, please let me know. Thank you.
