  1. I am a home brewer and would love to practice my hobby at home because I enjoy beer with flavor.  I'm not after a higher alcohol content, just more flavor.  The larger brewers fail to produce anything that has a decent flavor.  Allowing microbreweries to set up shop would be wonderful.  It would force the two monopolies to rethink what they produce.  I realize that is a term that is not typically associated with large Thai companies, 'rethink', but it would do them some good.

I BELIEVE that you're way off on the 2-3 beers per day cost of insurance.  And at that age, when I lived in Thailand, it simply was not available, at least through Thai providers, and the farang provider options that were available were simply out of reach of most farangs living in Thailand.

He's about right.  I did a quick search.  This was the least expensive for a 69 year old: £184.16 31 days per trip Premier.  This is the medical coverage £10 million. Taking 3 thirty (30) day trips in a year, the daily cost is £2.05.

  3. its no different than them putting a stamp that isn't in a quadrant of the page as the intent was or putting the 12th stamp on the same page because that can't flip 3 pages to a fresh page.  I have 2 sets of extra pages in my passport and they have yet to be touched.  Its like they have a curse or something.  Most of my other pages have more than 4 stamps on them.  Go figure.

My search suggests that they are called "ping pong" bombs because they are similar in size to a ping pong ball. Link follows. While the article does not explain what is contained in the bomb, the article does offer an interesting perspective on the history of bombings in Thailand, and some interesting comments on the government itself from the Japan Times POV. A worthwhile read.

Would there be another link to the article in the Japan times? I get a Forbidden message when trying to see the article.

Its not to do with wife using your name, its to do with you not being able to own land. Its something along these lines, Wife is buying land inside a marriage and that land in theory is a marital asset and therefore subject to a 50/50 split in a divorce etc. You cannot own land so you need to sign away marital rights to the land. The land becomes the personal non-marital property of the wife.

Basically to stop foreigners owning land via divorce and/or their wifes being proxy owners on their behalf.

A few years ago Thai women couldn't buy land if married to a foreigner for the same reasons.

    Peter,

Thank you very much.  Now how to figure out how to get this form, get it signed/notarized and to Thailand.

  6. I seeking clarification and understanding.  My wife and I are in the process of buying a home.  I have just been informed that I need to present myself to a Thai consulate because of this.  Apparently is has to do with us being married and my wife chose to use my last name.  From my understanding the form will be presented to the Land Office.   We are dealing directly through the bank and buyer.  I am currently out of country working, hence the reason I have to go to a Thai consulate.  I am getting vague help from the bank, just go the consulate and say your wife is buying a home.  They will know what you need.  I don't know what I need.  I know that I cannot own land. I get it.  What exactly is this form/document?  Help.

  7. Hello all.  My brother in law's wife was killed not so long ago in northern Thailand.  They have two wonderful children, a boy and girl.  Several questions have arisen based on actions of her family over the kids and property.  When a parent dies, doesn't the surviving parent retain custody of the children?  Is this automatic?  The father works in Phuket and has a condo and home.  Can the family of the deceased lay claim to the kids and property?  Perhaps a recommendation of a good lawyer?  The plan is, and currently happening, for the kids to stay with my sister in law in Bangkok.  She has the space in her home as my wife and I only have a 1 bedroom condo.  Any and all info will be appreciated.

  8. I was just in Thailand and wanted to open a 'Joint' account with my wife.  I currently have an account with Bangkok Bank.  I figured it would be no problem to open another account as I was already an established account holder.  Not so.  Because I do not have a work permit or long term visa, I am unable to do so.  It was the same story at every bank we went to.  We tried K-bank, Siam, Krungsri, Krungthai.  All sang the same song.  Banking rules have changed dramatically from years past.  Its gotten damm difficult to open one especially with the Embassies no longer doing Income Verifications.
Bottom line, rules have changed and its gonna be a rough ride.

  9. Is there a site, if it is even done, that will show who, when and where people are arrested at Swampy?  Example: Bob walks into the airport to fly home.  Visa is in order, has ticket, everything is normal.  When checking in or at passport control when the name is checked in the system a flag is raised and the individual is arrested.  Where would someone go to see that info, if available?

  10. Just wanted to pass along my experience today registering my marriage in Bangkok.  Me and the new Mrs arrived at Bangrak office bright and early, 6:30am.  Appeared we were the second in the que.  Felt good to arrive and be the second in line.  When the gentleman outside reviewed our documents, my embassy certified copy of my passport was not good enough.  He wanted it to have been stamped by the ministry.  We had our documents checked earlier in the week and were told everything was fine, not at this location.  We ended up having to go to Rat Burana: Rat Burana Rd, Khwaeng Rat Burana, Khet Rat Burana, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10140 (สำนักงานเขตราษฎร์บูรณะ).  We arrived at this office about 7:35.  We were the first for marriage certificates and had two other couples come in that tried the Bangrak office first.  Might be worth while starting at this office.  Come to find out that lady that completed out paperwork used to work at the Bangrak office.  She stated that if the Embassy certifies the passport copy, there is no ministry stamp, translation, required.  As this was my case there were no issues.  She was a wonderful woman to deal with.  Highly recommend going to this office to start.  I had my other documents prepared, translated, and taken the ministry through a translation company that was near my embassy done on a previous visit.

Hope this may help.  I realize every experience is different.

" The number of X-Ray machines is also up from four to ten. "

Two of which will be manned by three operators (two sort of working while one checks Facebook for the latest Hi-So scandal) while the other 8 machines gather dust.

I was thinking along these same lines.  Hope they actually have people operating them during flight times and not have many closed down.
