Oh really, i distinctly remember a Post from yourself finding it amusing that less well off Brits would be really struggling after the Brexit exchange rate drop. I remember it because i thought it was offensive and unnecessary.

You go on and on about old man / younger girl / house building stupidity but there are a number of relationships of this type Thailand that do work and have been successful even if a bargirl is one of the parties. If you buy a house in the West and have kids when things go wrong you are just as likely to lose the house as here. We all make mistakes at times. You should lighten up and have more consideration for others.

OK your first point, that was aimed at those who actually voted for Brexit. Furthermore, as a Brit myself, it also affects me

I never suggested that there weren't instances where that combination works out. This thread, however, isn't about that is it? It's about "misfortune" or in the case of those who do end up falling for the oldest one in the book even with the surfeit of warnings out there, "stupidity".

What an insane distortion of what I said and intended. Rule of law is the norm in virtually every civilized country. I expect justice, not attempts to extract bribes. Your invitation to "piss off to another country" reveals your chav/eurotrash/yobbo mentality which infects so many interactions in Thailand.

I don't think the "chav/eurotrash/yobbo" mentality applies to someone who's just been able to adapt to the way things can be here.

People with that type of mentality are far more likely to kick off ( a bit like what you're doing, actually)

You won't last much longer here if you carry on the way you are - if they police don't give you a slap (figuratively speaking) then a stroke will

Chill out, take the rough with the smooth or go somewhere else because you're boring the shit out of everyone

  3. Try Sing Sing Theater, Beam in Thonglor, Glow in Sukhumvit 23, Above 11 on Sukhumvit 11 and Ce La Vi (formerly Ku De Ta) on Soi Narathiwas off Sathorn

Some good-looking white women in these places but the younger ones can be standoff-ish and a bit haughty - they like to flaunt as much pink skin as they can get away with thinking the Thai girls are envious even though the latter attract far more attention from the younger white guys

The older ones I've dealt with - 26 and up - made a pleasant change from the often intellectually-dull Thai girls that tend to congregate around foreigners

Having said that, be aware that the Thai women in the places I mentioned often have a lot more going on between their ears than the typical bargirl or tourist joint freelancer

  4. Do I take pleasure or amusement in others' misfortune?

Nope - it's seriously bad karma

Do I take pleasure or amusement at the consequences of others' stupidity?

It depends on the individual case but if, like most of the "misfortune" befalling Westerners here, it involves old men, young locals, house building/buying and monthly stipends - (in other words, the oldest one in the book) . . . .

    Hell, yes

Let me break it down for you in nice little pieces so you can understand. ANY retiree contributes to the tax base since sales are taxed here just as they are in other countries. Anything you buy is taxable. The fees you pay for visas and extensions are part of the tax base. We do not live here free of charge, despite the propaganda generated by the farang-hating junta.

You're sounding more foolish with each post

Everyone who buys anything in the country contributes to the tax base - Thai or non-Thai - that has no bearing on the issue of a farang carrying a passport versus not carrying one.

Farangs working here and paying more in income tax than most Thais earn in a whole year can live with these grey areas because the pros of living here still easily outweigh the cons but you think your age or your piddly pension makes you a member of some sort of elite club and that you should be allowed to saunter through life here with your nose in the air, never having to be bothered by officialdom.

    Sorry, but it doesn't

If you feel you're so persecuted here, pi$$ off somewhere else. There's plenty of countries in Asia where the rules regarding the carrying of ID are more to your liking

It's quite simple....it's called GET OUT OF MY LIFE!!!!! I was issues a visa for one year and told it was unnecessary to carry my passport. I carried a COPY to make sure that I had documentation. The police told me that I needed my original passport and detained me for a number of hours before releasing me. The fact that I was not fined or jailed is immaterial. The police DO NOT know the law.....and do not care. They are constantly cruising for bribes. This is indefensible, despite your idea that "this is Asia", so just accept it. You either have law.....or you do not. There is no middle ground. Which is it??

Law or no law, black or white . . . as I said before, there are only shades of grey

Whether or not you like it, it is what it is. You can either choose to live with it or book a flight.

My experience has been different to yours but even if I had been asked to produce the original passport, it would represent nothing more than an irritating inconvenience.

I certainly wouldn't call it persecution or abuse

  7. 26 minutes ago, Jools said:

Belligerant and self-important because I presented my passport card and was told that it wasn't enough? I ALWAYS defer to Thai cretins in authority. Anything less is asking for trouble. The bottom line is that you and others will defend the Thai insanity regardless of the damage it causes to people who contribute to the tax base and obey the law.

Maybe it was your response to being told it wasn't enough that resulted in your being taken to the station for "questioning".

I don't know how you "contribute to the tax base" but, if you do by way of work, it's still a bit of a stretch to claim that you're being "persecuted" or being subjected to "abuse".

I'm not defending anything - I just don't see how what you're whinging about represents persecution.

As I said before, I live in a part of Bangkok where police stops are commonplace and in all the 8 years I've been here, a copy of my passport with the entry stamp has been accepted without question

  8. 14 minutes ago, Jools said:

An amazing display of bovine excrement. I am  66 years old, clean cut, well dressed and STILL carted off to the police station despite having a valid visa. You can defend the system all you like but it still does not mesh with decency and democracy and human rights.

I've been here 8 years, I'm under 50 and dress smartly too so why is it that when I show my passport copy, I'm spoken to with respect and sent on my way with a smile but you, a 66 year old man are being taken to the police station?

Doesn't matter how old you are - If your attitude in real life resembles anything like that which you display here, you're probably being taken to the police station because you come across as being belligerent and self-important.

  10. 1 minute ago, Jools said:

Point is I CARRY  a copy of my passport and I STILL get taken to the police station for "questioning", even after the Head of Immigration has decreed that you DO NOT need to carry your passport. What further proof do you need that they are simply extorting money?

Speak for yourself. You would know Peds more than we would.

Well if you're being carted off to the police station after showing a copy of your passport, you obviously come across as being really dodgy. Maybe change your attitude

  11. It's not abuse. Maybe you just have a low tolerance for anything that doesn't make sense to your Western programming.

Thailand doesn't have the same consistencies as the West. Things are shades of grey here. You knew that shit before you came.

I've been here 8 years and, having lived in and around Asoke all that time, I've been stopped many times by police officers asking to see my passport. I've always presented a copy of the main page and the entry stamp.

Sent on my way with no questions

I'll never understand why some foreigners think the country ought to be run to make their lives as simple as possible and that anything which steps out of line with their narrow view of how things should be represents some kind of enormous affront to their high & mighty sense of personal freedom.

I make such a suggestion as if foreign tourists inflame this bloke so much that he has to attack them, surely it's best all round to put the scoundrel far from them?

Oh my, such odd terms being used here. Is every person wanting to get some crumpet 'sexually depraved'? I'm sensing some issues here....

No not at all - if people want to "go whoring" as you so succinctly put it, they should be free to do so.

My point was that you can't expect the Thai authorities to make Pattaya the exception to the rules that govern any and all red light districts anywhere around the world just to protect oh-so-vulnerable sex tourists.

Millions visit Pattaya every year and the vast majority are perfectly aware of the intrinsic risks of doing so but you don't hear them calling for special effort to turn the city into some sort of whoremonger safe zone.

Perhaps each sex tourist should be assigned a private security detail to keep watch as he negotiates the barfine

    1.  Modern state pension systems began when Bismarck created one in Germany along with national health insurance and accident insurance in the 1880's.  It's true that the US has lagged behind.

    2.  The Social Security system was however created in 1935.  Private pensions did become more widespread in the US in the 50's.

    3.  Your demographic prediction of a coming crisis in Social Security is frequently heard from innumerate folks like yourself.   Apparently you have never stopped to ask yourself why there was no such crisis when the ratio of workers to retirees fell from 5 to 1 in the 60's to 3 to 1 in the 90's.  In fact, the standard of living of both SS recipients and workers increased significantly during that 30 year period.  How do you suppose that was possible?   You have assumed that workers in the immediate post-war economy produced the same amount of output as workers today.   But that's obviously ridiculous.  In the 50's GM had 400,000 workers and produced fewer cars per year than today with 40,000.  Productivity gains affect not only manufacturing workers, but in fact are the source of the rising standard of living across the whole economy.  And that includes supporting retirees.  Today's workers make more than their predecessors in real terms even after paying more in payroll taxes.  That's the effect of productivity gains.

I hope that you will be able to fund your retirement with your savings, but if you do manage it without SS you will be among a small minority of workers.

Sorry but that diatribe about industrial productivity has nothing to do with whether or not pensions are going to be worth the paper they're written on 15-20 years into the future.

The only thing you need be concerned about is the gap between what's paid in by workers and the current/future benefits the fund must pay out

It doesn't matter what workers are making today because defined-benefit, final salary-type pensions are becoming extinct.

They're been replaced by defined contribution type pensions that work completely differently; ie your money gets chucked into a pool with that of thousands of others and moved around the financial markets by a fund manager. In essence, you're a stock market punter.

The reason for this is basic mathematics; put simply, final salary schemes have become too expensive to continue adding future beneficiaries who will (if they already don't) outnumber those making contributions . . . and that doesn't take into account the crappy returns these funds are getting from their traditional "safe" investments in government bonds which are at record lows with many offering negative yields.

Just one of example of the problem is the massive hole in the British Tata Steel pension fund. It's creating a headache for the Indian owners who are desperately trying to offload it because no buyer wants to take on responsibility for 130,000 members' benefits most of whom are taking money out each month, not putting money in

It’s not so much the case that Thai women are easier to date then western women, it’s more the case that many Thai women can find themselves in situations where they have no job, maybe separated or divorced from Thai husbands or Thai boyfriends, in debt for some reasons or heading towards middle age with no future prospects of securing a good future for themselves. Also some have baggage, young children and families in tow. Not all of them of course, only the Thai women that have not already established a good career or some wealth for themselves.

A lot of them, especially the ladies who have some English language skills advertise themselves on dating sites and are especially seeking older Farlangs that they believe will be their ticket for a secure future. If a Farlang is genuinely looking for a Thai girlfriend or wife and he is single not just looking for a short time relationship, a bit on the side or a girlfriend with benefits, then my guess is he could manage to fix himself up with a Thai female partner within 2 weeks or joining an online dating site. I have an Australian friend who uses these sites and says he is spoilt for choice and he is 70 years old getting women in the their 30s interested in him. But the fact is, these old Farlangs are taking on dependants rather than wives, they are not sincere joining of men and women together based on love.

Other then that I would say that Thai women have the same expectations and dating preferences as do the Western women. It is a myth that Thai women will fall for any guys with white skin regardless of age, looks and status.

The old boys are going to crucify you

No one has said that they were all Moroccans.

But the question has been asked multiple times. What war are Moroccans fleeing ?

If you care to read the other sources that people have been kind enough to supply, rather just venting, it appears that alcohol and unwanted attention directed at females was a factor in things escalating. Due to the migrants being given an alcohol ban and a 1900 Hrs curfew, then it seems probable that it was instigated by the actions of the migrants.

Given recent history in Germany, this would not really come as a surprise to anyone.

Now instead of assaulting your keyboard and venting your spleen. It might be better for you to take a deep breath, do a bit of research, and that way you will not come across as an uninformed idiot.

No, you need to stop filling in the blanks with your prejudice.

I never said that the 20 asylum seekers were fleeing war - that comment was about the overall situation with the migrant crisis.

I didn't know for certain whether the 20 or so people attacked by the 80 cowards were fleeing war or not but naturally assumed they were although I didn't actually say they were.

The delicious irony of a man who lives in Thailand castigating economic migrants is totally lost on you, isn't it?
