  1. I had the opportunity to visit a small water treatment/bottling plant up in Isan some years ago. Having a background in water treatment,I was more than curious to see how the process compared to Western practice. The plant was set up much the same as any developed country with two sources,(a drilled well and rain catchment) Treatment consisted of pressure filters and ultraviolet light for disinfection(the system's equipment was correctly sized for the designed flow) The bottling equipment was semi-automated and up to the task. So far, so good until I began to follow the flow through the plant. The filers were in two banks of 3 filters each allowing one bank to be by-passed for back washing. Somewhere along the way,all the filers had been by-passed with the UV light out of order(it gets better). The owner of the plant was my gf uncle and we stayed with her mother near the plant. There was a path leading from an outside toilet past the catchment tank for the bottling plant. The path had a lot traffic and I began to notice some people dipping their fingers into the catchment tank as they passed after leaving the horng nam. This was 20 years ago so I sure the UV light has been replaced by now...Bottoms UP!

  2. Back in the day, my wife and I got off a private long tail at a different stop than we started from. We had know idea where were. Luckily there was a tuk tuk by the curb who offered us his services. I gave him the card from the hotel we were staying at and he said it would be 100bt. Being a wise tourist , I bargained to 50bt which he excepted,(wow,I got this down). We jumped in the tuk tuk and off we went to exactly across the two lane street from where we started(unbeknownst to us, the long tail driver was doing us a favor, putting us off near our hotel) So maybe we got a 30 sec. ride for 50 bt. We couldn't stop laughing, witch got the tuk tuk driver cracking up. I think this single event,(this was our first day in Thailand) endeared us to the Land of Smiles...

We're living in Oregon,USA for another one and a half years before we'll move to Thailand. The plan is to live in Rayong, Province for 4 months and Hawaii the rest of the year. We haven't any plans about traveling to Thailand until we finish up here. Life is good here but looking forward to the move. Let's keep in touch and hook up sometime in the future. [email protected]

  4. Hey Denio, thanks for your perspective. I'm totally in your corner. I think that many folks on TV have been burnt in some way or another (maybe their own doing) and will bitch until they die (human nature). I bet the majority of Western/Asian relationships are working very well, unnoticed. You are someone I would like to meet. Thanks again,Marty

  5. I think we are more apt to hear the horror stories than positive ones. I've been with my Thai GF for 12 years and my experience is similar to Kenio's. The first two or so years of our relationship I dropped $30,000 supporting her and paying her collage tuition. (must have been a little horney back then) Like Kenio's wife, my GF won't let me pay for anything. It actually pisses me off. Like all relationships there's quirks, but I couldn't imagine a Faroug C++t putting up with my shenanigans .
