Hi All,
Am in the market for a knife sharpener (electric or manual doesn't matter) in the 1000 baht range. Not looking for a Thai wet stone etc or to use local knife sharpening service. Appreciate any suggestions as the range, quality and price on Lazada seems to vary greatly.
Cheers.

I think Thai culture is significantly less prone to change than Western culture.
This is either a feature or a bug depending on your outlook or you could say it is a good thing in some respects and bad thing in others.

They really are Thai schools teaching Thai content
Agree. This was the main reason I took my son out and now send him to an International school. There were too many unnecessary fluff subjects and did not want to learn Chinese (hands full with two languages without putting a third in the mix). I also found that the Thai teachers bought with them some bad habits acquired from the Thai teaching system. It was also Thai run which initially I didn't see as a problem but became quickly clear was riddled with the type of problems/attitudes you find at regular Thai schools sorry to say.
I also feel that bilingual schools, by their nature, are trying to do too much by incorporating two languages and two systems making it hard to master anything. So even though the school we tried was crappy all round I think you would run into this same problem at other bilingual schools also.
It's a difficult decision. I felt we had to choose one dominant language and one secondary language. I chose English at an International school because I can get help at home and because I understand how Western school systems work.

OP lost me at " Thailand isn't cheap to live".
I've never understood how people can say that.

Thanks. Yes next time I'll try to take the coastal route I think.

Hi
just wanted to say thank you for this wonderful series of posts. It has inspired me to drive up from Malaysia and enjoy the lovely town of PKK.
Stopped at a beautiful beach resort in a small town north of Surat Thani on the way up called Lamae. Drove for around 100k up the back roads near the ocean. Very little traffic and a wonderful experience.
Looking forward to my next few weeks exploring around PKK.
I notice there is an aquarium near the National Park. Is it worth a visit and how about the National Park itself?
Thanks again
Hi Silornis, where is Lamae exactly? Is the beach nice? Can't seem to find anything on google maps except Amphur Lamae in Chumporn which is inland.
Will be doing the same drive later this year and always keen to check out new places.

Having not long returned from a visit to Prachuap Kiri Khan town and surrounds we very much liked the area and see it as a possibility to relocate however schools are the deal breaker. Wondering if anyone has any info on Thap Sakae and Prachuap Catholic schools? I know from a previous thread that Prachuap has a MEP to M3 and Thap Sakae has and EP right through to M6. Would like to know what the general atmosphere and quality of these two schools are like, whether there are many (any?) luk krungs, which is the better of the two etc etc. We're familiar with the catholic school system here so we have an idea what to expect - if we can get a school with a decent mix of kids, teachers without too much attitude and a decent enough English programme we'd be satisfied with that.
ANY info at all on these schools will be highly appreciated - info online about them is pretty thin on the ground!
Cheers.

Glasgow established a big research centre and they discovered some interesting things. 1) Caffeine as a cause is a myth in most cases. 2) People with high levels of self-esteem sleep like a log, and drop-off easily.
I would LOVE that to be true about coffee. Am trying to quit now due to sleep disorder and I really miss it.
Got a link to the study?

Thanks Tutsiwarrior. I have tried Circadin a few years ago and didn't work for me but I might give it another try. There's only that and one other brand in my local pharmacies.

Thanks for the suggestions Honu

Currently trying to give up caffeine and so am in the market for a reasonably priced, palatable green or herbal tea. There are no specialty shops in our area so it would need to come from Makro/Lotus/Big C.
I'm missing my routine of sitting down with a warm mug so I really hope there's something out there (don't like decaf).
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have a similar problem: I get off to sleep usually with no problem but wake up frequently during the night (sometimes literally 15mins after dropping off) and wake up far to early and am not getting near enough sleep anymore. I used to be an 8hr straight through until 2 years ago.
I have read in this thread that quite a few people getting good results from Melatonin - even the long suffering OP's wife was able to get some relief although sad to read it's no longer working.
If anyone with the similar problem of frequent awakenings and waking too early can let me know exactly what type of Melatonin they use and what dose they use would be greatly appreciated. A year or so ago I tried the (expensive) slow release Melatonin but it did nothing for me at all. I'm not sure if that rules out Melatonin for me generally?
Any help would be appreciated.
Best of luck to the OP's wife.

Thanks. I'm thinking of something easy for the missus to use rather than mucking around with wet stones and so forth.
Just a bit suss on gadgets although I know plenty of people use them abroad.
