  1. Thats not a smooth surface. It's made of wood, which means if I decide to cut anything on it that is wet, it will be absorbed into that...and that's what I don't want. Thanks though smile.png

has done everything for me so far. thumbsup.gif

Have you made tortillas on this, by chance?

  2. Thats not a smooth surface. It's made of wood, which means if I decide to cut anything on it that is wet, it will be absorbed into that...and that's what I don't want. I should have also added it needs to be made of something that will be easily cleaned and does not absorb or take in liquid (so as to become unsanitary after so many uses...). Thanks though smile.png

  3. don't use marble, use granite!

Exactly. I built several restaurants over the years and never heard of "cooking" on marble. Ovens were "fire brick". Sandstone will also work in some applications. Granite not sure, think it cracks pretty quick from heating and cooling.

Don't you just want a thin flat iron griddle with a handle like they use in Mexico though?

    Something like this https://www.amazon.com/Mexican-Origins-Tortilla-PreSeasoned-Cast-Iron/dp/B000JLYQIC/188-8001273-0423816?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0

I believe my buddy found one locally at Central or Lotus for making pizza on. If you PM me and remind me I'll check with him...thumbsup.gif

marble in general is a poor choice of material for cooking because it is porous and a somewhat friable, so it lets water in and stains easily, in addition to being a potential bacteria breeding ground.

There are slabs of marble that are specially treated to augment their stability and impermeability and these are also sold as "steak stones".

well-formed granite is one of the hardest natural stones, well suited for any domestic use.

another good material is basalt, widely used for cooking stones. I think basalt is what people call "lava stone".

a basalt cooking stone will look more Asian and classy than a granit stone.

So I guess I should clarify more. This stone is not one that I am going to use in the oven. It will be more like a 'cutting board'. I want a nice, flat, smooth surface that I can use to do things like kneading dough. Or rolling out tortillas, etc. I don't have the space to make a whole kitchen counter, so I was planning to simply get a slab of granite or other (that is glossy and non-porous), but after visiting the store...these things are simply too heavy. Even the small 30X60 are dangerously heavy. If I were to take them out and put them on the table to use as a prep surface, in the event I dropped it, it could crush my toes. So perhaps I need to get something else. Any ideas?

  4. Thanks for the responses, folks! Really appreciate the input. I'll look into Boonthavorn tomorrow. Is this like a store? Or one of them suppliers where you must ask them for custom orders when you walk in? Okay I just looked it up online. Unfortunately, I can't find a translate in English for the page--man I really need this Thai language course to start sooner!!!

  5. That would be great, but any ideas where I could find something like this in Bangkok? Or perhaps what company would sell something like this? I just need one about the size of a small table. Something I can make, say, tortillas on.

  6. i have noticed something similar to 'ceasar - stone' at my local vietnamese restaurant used as table tops. we are up here in the ultimate sticks so you should be able to get that in civilised areas from a custom kitchen manufacturer.

it won't stain like marble, either.

Thanks for the tip! What's a 'ceasar stone' anyway?

  7. This is probably a more odd request, but I like to cook and recently I've been wanting to start making tortillas and/or nacho chips. And I'd like have a nice, smooth, flat surface (that can get wet without any issues). Back at home, you could get a square marble slab to do this on. Do they have anything like this in Thailand? Or anything equivalent? If so, where can I find something like this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks :).

  8. If it's any help to you, I lived over in the Ramkhamhaeng area, and there were plenty of locations there in quiet neighborhoods...but you're going to have to get used to being the sore thumb sticking out. I was the only foreigner in the whole unit I lived in. But it was, if nothing else, fairly quiet. Also, if noise is a problem and you are having trouble sleeping, I've found getting a fan and turning it to level 3 helps quite a bit.

  9. Just recently got 'scammed' from the BTS station. they have this 'promotion' offering you a 25 trip card at the price of 700 baht (which ends up being 25 baht or something like that). My normal BTS cost from my location to where I live is 44 baht. As it turns out the trip deducts 25 baht when I enter the BTS, then when I get to my destination my card would beep and not let me through. Upon going to the window they told me some mumbo jumbo (I think that I was at a different company owned area of the BTS bull #$!@) and then charged me 20 baht to exit. In total, I was being charged 45 baht for each trip I took as opposed to 44 baht. Some promotion crook that was! Thailand is really the country of crook-you-when you can. I'm guessing this is why the country is impoverished. Any time your whole country does what it can to screw others and swindle them, karma will inevitably come back on you.

    Are you for real?

Yes. I didn't see any 'fine print' talking about the charge upon arrival at the destination BTS station. But I'm sure they probably have some hidden place around there they could have pointed it out to me. Don't get those bargain promotions from the BTS station. Put your coins in the machine and get the card you know will get you in and out. Thai 'deals' are no deals at all.

  10. I wish I had your problem. I've had 4 things shipped to me here in Thailand. Not a single one of them ever arrived. I don't know who to blame and I don't care to hate over it. I simply don't use the mail system (whether it's incoming or outgoing) anymore.

  11. "Never ever be tempted to marry a bar girl, most are as thick as a brick". that would apply to Thais in general. particularly

    drivers and motorbike riders.

    Only marry pedestrians,OK got it.

They are just as thick, they don't realise that you should look both ways before crossing the road, even on a one way street.

If you are a man and your interest is to marry, I think you've made a great mistake by coming to this country. Unless, of course, you've played the co-dependent in swindling relationships your whole life. It's hard to break old habits...

  12. You know, if Thailand jury/government system had any competency at all, they wouldn't have all this scam crap going on. But then, what am I talking about? Going beyond competency, you have to get past ethics, as well. There is no hope for Thailand...

  13. Well, its quite certain you don't live anywhere near Sukhumvit--good luck even finding a place to rent at around that price! Yeah I could normally get by around that price in the Ramkhamhaeng area, but then again I lived in my room and was a gamer for nearly 6 months. My place was around 4500 baht per month and I pretty much cooked my own food. I could walk to the nearest vegetable vendor. Of course, it's not a really exciting life eating pasta day in and day out, but tis' the life of a frugal person. Well--a gamer anyway.

  14. Nothin new--still the same. Thai scam deals, pretty ladies who will rob you of your dignity in years to come; trips to and from immigration waiting in long lines (though I did hear rumors they changed tourist visas to 6 months and you don't have to keep taking trips in and out of the country--God did Thailand do something right for a change? I doubt it will last long once the Thai taxi drivers and airline companies %$@#! enough about it...); still a 2nd class citizen unless Thai; still takes 2 hours to get anywhere 20 kilos away in the city during normal business hours...

    What were you expecting? -.-
