  1. You need a non-B visa to work here, but to work legally you will also need a WP from the labor department so you need both. First you get the visa (probably form the Thai embassy in Venetian, Laos) and when you have your visa you will go back to the school and they will take you to the provincial labor department to apply for WP.

The assistance can be anything from just supplying the documents needed for visa and WP all the way to actually take you to all the places, help you fill in your applications, pay the fees for visa and WP and so on.

If you quit your job your visa will be canceled.

Incorrect, visas are not cancelled, only extensions of stay.

  2. I can see what immigration are attempting to do i.e. stop illegal working which is fine but I dont understand why there isnt other ways to clamp down on this. Even the UK gives a 6 month visa yet Thailand for whom tourism is a significant portion of the countries income seems to do everything to stop tourists. Obviously they cant or wont control Thai business's and opt for the easy solution.

How come other countries can take care of illegal working whilst Thailand seems unable to?

    Wrong.

" However, while one of the premier tourist destinations in the world, the Thai economy only receives around 7% of its GDP from international tourism revenue,"

  3. Farangs pay the normal price.

Thai people get a discount. Sometimes the farangs get a discount also if they show their license or work permit.

Still very cheap, doesn't bother me the Thais get a discount.

Last week at the Royal building near the zoo, Thai girlfriend paid 150 baht, I paid 75 baht. I got the 50% discount because my phone is with AIS. They didn't even bother to ask me for a license.

At the zoo we paid the same. I can't remember if there were two prices there or not.

The answer to the OP is........ It depends.

Did you mean Western caucasian? Or as I suspect, you meant foreigner.

  4. "Posted 2015-09-22 20:01:18

Hi all, I have a friend from Pakistan, our school wants to help him with his visa and work permit. " - overstay and working illegally it seems.

" I have a 1 year overstay" - Want to fly to Laos in the next few weeks to clear my overstay ( about 2 years)

Seems your overstay is a lot longer than you told us on this post.

  5. So my questions: If I go to the immigration center, will they detain me and/or make me leave the country within 7 days?

The immigration officer will have the right to detain you, if he so chooses, or he can stamp your passport with an order to leave within 24 hours, or he can give you a 30-day extension of stay. Nobody can tell you with any degree of certainty what will happen. Some officers have an itchy trigger finger, others have not.

What is this ? I have never heard of it or seen it reported before ?

  6. " the cashier refused to give me the Thai rate despite having a work permit. "

Are you Thai ? Because having a work permit one would presume you are not, ergo, you should not pay the Thai national price.

Maybe you're new around here. In the past, having a work permit has entitled one to the Thai rate, although it had always been a little inconsistent with regards to which parks and attractions abided by it.

Not that new, but I do know that a work permit never "entitled" you to the Thai national price, it was a concession that some places gave to foreign workers.

  7. You should be ok but there is no guarantee you'll get an extra 7 days so have a plan B. The 7 days will start from when the current stay expires.

But I have not seen a report anywhere of anyone having been denied the 7 day "extension", have you ?

    Yes.

There is no 7 day extension to apply for and it's up to the individual IO or office whether or not they will issue 7 days to leave the country. It's meant to be used by IO's to give people that are denied extensions time to leave the country.

I know exactly what it is for, what I am saying is that I have never heard of anyone being denied it.

  8. Why are people making comments about immigration making it more difficult to retire here?

Most people have no problems with immigration.

Some farangs go to immigration office and get agitated about silly things, yes some immigration officers like to show their importance but most are helpful and obliging.

They change this change that, some say, rules have not changed, it is not more difficult than last year or other recent years.

Did you mean Western caucasians, or as I suspect, you meant foreigners ?

  9. Get an O-A while in Canada and just do a border run before the first year runs out and get another year, no additional paperwork in Thailand, other than your normal 90 day reports

First year you can come and go as many times as you want, on the the second year just get a reentry permit from Immigration if you want to leave the kingdom and return back to Thailand before your permission to stay expires

That is one way of getting the two years out of one visa

The OP does not mention his age, so this may not be possible for him.

  10. There is no way of extending your tourist visa entry beyond the, one time, 30 days (unless you're married to a Thai or a parent of a Thai).

You should have no problem getting a 30 day visa exempt entry which can also be extended by 30 days.

Tourist visas are not designed for long term stay so you'll need to get a new visa or visa exempt entry every 60/90 days.

Incorrect - I say again, you can get the 7 day "get out of Dodge" extension.

  11. If your passport is suspended while you are travelling

If you are abroad when your passport is suspended, you have two choices:

    • make arrangements to pay your support debt with the Maintenance Enforcement Program that asked for the suspension; or

ask the closest Canadian government office, such as a Canadian embassy or consulate, to give you an emergency travel document. This document will let you return to Canada but it will not allow you to travel anywhere else. For more information, contact Passport Canada.

  12. Return of a passport (request from the Passport Program)

Canadian passports are the property of the Government of Canada. If a person is requested to return a passport, the passport must be provided to the Passport Program without delay or by the date indicated. If not returned by the stated date, the passport will be cancelled, and law enforcement partners, such as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and border control agencies, will be informed. In such circumstances, the passport bearer may be subject to investigation and prosecution under the Criminal Code by the police for theft and illegal possession of Government of Canada property.

Please note that a cancelled passport cannot be used for travel or reactivated.

Neither the Passport Program nor any representative of the Government of Canada can be held responsible for problems encountered by people attempting to use a cancelled passport at border crossings.

  13. " Taxes. I'm a Canadian working as a freelancer online and will soon drop that to start my own online businesses.

    - For the freelance income, I have clients from around the world. They pay me through a freelancer website based in the US, so I earn USD regardless of my or the client location. I then transfer that money to my Canadian bank and withdraw in Thailand using an ATM."

The visa you refer to is for tourists - not people working here. :-)
