  1. My plan .......I am also coming in with a one-way ticket from the United States............

Doesn't sound like a very good idea to me.

I have been following a lot of threads recently on the subject of the requirement for onward tickets.

Do not have a visa. IATA recommend deny boarding

Have visa. No requirement for onward or return ticket. Some embassies such as Japan or Korea require show return ticket because of risk of their nationals overstaying but IATA regs do not advise airlines to deny boarding. CWL Cardiff international will refuse boarding to any person who does not possess visa following break of diplomatic relations

  2. Ok, here is what I've been told. I can enter Thailand on a 30 day tourist visa, then i can finish setting up my company in Thailand. I'm using bangkokbase to do this. THey say that once I finish setting up the company that my company will invite ME to work in Thailand. With those papers i can go to any neighboring country and get my multiple-entry non-immigrant B visa which will in turn get me my work permit. Is this the case and if not then where did i go wrong?

    Dave

Dave. You have obviously done your homework.

You wil have no problems and good luck to you. So many sad people post their problems here for less than expert advice. You could do less than follow their example.

  3. Personally I'd opt for Lopburi 3 first option in which case you do not need to apply for a multi-entry O visa. Just get a single entry O based on marriage (easy just produce marriage cert). After 60 days you can get your entry extended to one year (and obtain a multi entry permit). Must have 400k in Thai bank or 40k month income. First extension can be a bit of hassle initially but then you have peace of mind and can come and go as you please. Otherwise you cannot remain for more than 90 days at any time. You then extend annually in Thailand, which despite what you may read or hear is a simple process.

  4. thanx. i presume that from getting the Tub test done, is that same day?, to getting the paperwork is quite quick and easy? Ive heard of people using the agencies near `the embassy (if thats right) to help speed things up. Such a worry and to think that illegals can get here for FREE.!!

Why waste money using an agency an agency? My experience THIS WEEK.

Monday produced my affirmation of freedom to marry on computer. You download standard letter from embassy website.

Tuesday travelled from up country to Bangkok and went straight to embassy. Waited 75 mins to hand over the Affirmation and passport and 2625 baht. Sign affirmation in front of the pleasant lady. The waiting area is pleasant enough.

0900 Weds back at embassy. No wait (unusual I imagine) and picked up affirmation (charmless man) which had been countersigned by vice consul.

Walked 3 mins to Ploenchit BTS where there are several accredited translators. Took 10 mins (they already have the standard translation on their computers). Cost 250baht.

0920 took Taxi to Department of consular affairs about 25km and 180 baht (incl highway troll). Arrived 1005. Filled out a simple form in English saying what I wanted (from box next to machine issuing queue tickets). 1020 seen by officer handed over affirmation and translation and copy of main passport page and 800baht. Sit down and waited 5 mins for name to be called when they issue receipt.

You then hang around for 2 hours - no problem very pleasant modern offices. Have good cheap cafeteria and coffee bar and pleasant waiting areas (can have a beer or 2 if you like as they have a 7-11 in the building). 1220 took another queue ticket. Number called in 2 mins. At 1230 I was outside the building with certified notarised paperwork and taxi back to BKK.

Could, if we wanted, have married that afternoon in BKK, all wife to be would have needed was housebook and ID but instead returned up country and will be tying the knot this afternoon.

Believe me it really is that simple and easy and completely hassle free (apart from telling the touts who hang around outside the embassy to politely bog off). An agent cannot speed things up. I know one couple who handed over 40,000baht (that is not a typo)

    synoticed ancoll

  5. so I really need someone to spell it all out for me. :o

I thought you were enquiring on behalf of a third party.

The procedures for setting up a company are well documented in this website but frankly you would need to employ a law firm. Your chance of obtaining a WP is NIL.

Your chance of being detected of working without a WP, or if you were of anyone giving two hoots is NIL. You are giving Thais employment. You are not doing anyone out of a job.

  6. Something that has occurred to me several times in Thailand has been being served something other than what I ordered. The staff then usually begs me to accept it because otehrwise they will have to pay for the mistake. I always go along with it (I am not too picky), but I often wonder if it a ruse to push a pricier item on me or unload something they need to get rid of.

Never happened to me. Probably playing you for a fool. No offence.

  7. Hi Andy,

Thanks so much for the wondeful reply.

I'll take the train to Khorat and possibly further afield (can i take my pack onboard with me if i travel second class?).

Check the train timetables (www.railway.co.th). There is only one fast train a day which leaves Bangkok around 0545 and it is no more scenic than the bus. All the others are slow or very slow. The bus services are very good to excellent.

And yes you can take the kitchen sink on board the train in any class.

  8. last saturday night I was assaulted ......its just a few old fossils come to relive old isaan memories, when brits were gods and yanks were just someone to kick the crap out of once a month........

Looks like the Yanks got their own back. By the way just what were the Brits doing in Isaan? As there appears to be no offical acknowledgement (other than those who enlisted with Aussie forces and those operating what was known as the bus sevice) we can only assume a b*lls-up and an embarassment to HM government. At least we Aussies admit we got duped by the yanks into believing it was a winnable war.

  9. My only other option seems to be taking a taxi. Is it worth it? And how much should I expect to pay? And then, just for fun, has anybody ever chartered a plane or helicopter?

    Whats wrong with the buses?

Is the taxi worth it? Depends how much money you have. But around 40 quid for 230 miles is probably the cheapest in the world. Go to departures floor and haggle. You'll get one for 3000 baht, easy. A fortune for them even allowing for petrol/deilsel price hikes.

  10. thanks

he has a multi o , a thai wife and he is retired.i am 48 have a thai wife ,i just want to do the right thing and keep my nose clean

    cheers

What is your query? How can we help YOU do the right thing and keep your nose clean?

  11. I spent a year or so in Khorat/Korat a few years back and can verify along the lines of Spaniel, that yes...there is still a bit of an expat community there / former GIs

The VFW restaurant is where they hang out, everyone in town knows it. Korat is home to the Second Army Area and lot of the comm. officers/Thai also like to eat at VFW. The food isnt exactly that good but its cheap.

If you are referring to the Passanee on Suranaree Road the food is excellent.

Everyone in the town knows it? I doubt that very much if you include the Thai population who appear to be in the majority.

There are a probably less than a dozen US citizens remaining in Korat province who served during the Vietnam War.

Korat is a pleasant enough town but whether the OP'S father would now find it so is doubtful. He must be in his 70's and hardly the time of life for a fundamental change in lifestyle.
