  1. For years I did the money in the bank routine, but switched to the embassy letter last year.....glad I did.....went to the US Embassy outreach here in Pattaya and was a breeze.....both at the outreach and at immigration...??

Might you please be so kind as to advise what you had to supply to the embassy for documentation of your income?

I, too, am thinking of going this route......

    Thank you!! smile.png

If from the US all you need is your passport and a completed income affidavit form. You swear an oath in front of a consular officer it is true and correct.

If not then it depends upon which country you are from.

Thank you, Kind Sir. I do indeed hold a US passport. I just thought they would want some verification beyond my sworn statement.

It's truly heartwarming to see that a man's word still counts for something in this crazy world......

  3. You post might be easier to understand were it not littered with acronyms which most will not understand.

Don't have a clue what you are going on about. Is this English?

If one doesn't understand the acronyms, then how could one possibly have the knowledge necessary to help?

Hardly a serious matter…IU is "in-vehicle unit"…a card reader…you insert a card with stored value and it deducts the ERP (electronic road pricing) automatically as you drive under the gantry….its used to pay a road toll to access certain roads in the cbd during peak hours…as well as certain key motorways.

Having lived here for two decades, I absolutely agree that acronyms are a simple matter here in SG.

And "cbd" = Central Business District. Just in case anyone was wondering......

    You're Welcome!! smile.png

NB: I stand by my original advice to retain PAID counsel. SG Immigration can be VERY strict when they so desire.

  4. Leaving aside the argument regarding whether or not he is actually working in the LOS and therefore requires a work permit, is he even allowed to earn money whilst on a retirement visa here?

    Methinks not......

    You're Welcome!! smile.png.

There is no rule that prevents a person from earning money outside the country if on a visa or extension of stay based upon retirement. There are many people that work outside the country on a rotation that are on extensions..

    Murky Stuff.

Thank you for the clarifying info!! smile.png

  5. "I'd rather go to Vietnam than Laos...for many reasons. If i cannot, how about Penang or Phnom Penh?"

Sounds like you are a little all over the place....

Cambodia does a one year multi entry business visa for $ 280.

    Not sure about Vietnam

What are the requirements for this multi entry business visa ? Apart of $280 of course ?

    Cheers

    Found this searching the Interwebs.

    Hope it helps, not confuses......

  6. I doubt very much that your statistics and ratio's are even close to being accurate but let's dream for a moment and say they are. In answer to your question "why", the answer is probably something along the lines of:

we know there's a lot of illegal Burmese etc in Thailand but the vast majority are working in the building trades or similar which is desperately short of workers because Thai's wont do that sort of work, they are working for low wages and essentially merely trying to put food on the table. White foreigners on the other hand come from countries that are quite prosperous by comparison so it doesn't make sense that they would come to Thailand to try and live (if they don;t have the requisite long term visa and funds) other than to perhaps run away and/or hide from something somewhere, especially since they are not allowed to work here without going through formalities and obtaining a job offer and work permit.

Precisely. FAR better said than by me

    Thank you!! smile.png

  7. About 99 out of 100 Burmese, Cambodians and Laotians are in Thailand illegally.

Maybe 1 in 100 White foreigners are here breaking minor rules.

So why aren't the 'law enforcement officers' chasing the highest groups of offenders?

Could it be because fellow Asians are 'us', and whites are 'them'?

I'm sorry, but I am barely qualified to speak for myself, let alone Thai law enforcement officials. But after reading some of the posts on here, I would purely speculate that the non-Asian farangs are presumed by the locals to have the money to pay any fines, whilst the neighbouring Asians might not?

Sorry, it's totally a guess on my part. But why doesn't that percentage of non-Asian farangs simply fall in line with the law?

It's very possible I am just missing something here......

  8. Why don't people just follow the law and reside legally?

We all live here legally and follow the laws, it's just the Thai authorities like to harass white folk.

I'm not sure why they seem to hate us, but it's clear that a lot of them do.

(particularly the wealthy Thais and those Thais in power)

Not wishing to be argumentative, but judging from the number of posts here on a nearly daily basis about intentional overstays, I rather doubt everyone is here legally. Maybe it's a side effect of living in a more restrictive society as I do, but I don't really see the issue with law enforcement officers actually making sure the law is being followed.

Like I have said before, I (thankfully!) just don't get it......

  9. whistling.gif The visa and any work permit/extension are two different things.

If he leaves his job the work permit is no longer valid and is turned back in to the Labor department.

What is crucial is when his original visa expires.

If his visa is already expired then he needs to leave the country to get another visa of some kind to allow him to stay in country.

If his original visa has not expired yet, he can stay here until it does expire.

From the original post the information is a bit confusing.

But he speaks of doing 90 day report it seems likely his original visa has already expired and he Is here on an extension. which indicates he has a work extension.

If is here on an extension to work that extension will end when he resigns or quits his job by not signing another contract.

Then he will have tto eave the country or find some way to get another visa to remain in the country.

Thank you for not only being correct, but succinct.

If only others would/could follow your example......
