Only 400,000 is required for an extension on the grounds of being married (as long as it''s to a Thai). The above mentioned "hoops" are no big deal, a couple of photos and a visit from immigration officers is not exactly arduous.
Have you ever done a marriage extension at Jomtien Immigration ? Didn't think so or you would def change your mind about jumping through hoops ...
These b.tches at counter 6 will constantly ask you for more docs even tho you have already shown them what they originally wanted to see - its a circus and one of the reasons I changed to retirement extension and why we are leaving Thailand now … Its just gonna get worse - wait for mandatory health insurance

How was the OP “extorted”?
Just go down to Jomtien IO and put on your uniform and get the bribes while there's any expats left - in a few years this dump will be empty for both tourists and expats

Amazing how much Thai apologist nonsense have to read here when people are being truly harassed and extorted by these disgusting IO's ...

Would the quickest and less costly way be for him to pay an agent to get it done? Maybe, 20,000 Baht more or less? Much cheaper than moving and the visa issue would be solved. Just my humble opinion. Thanks.
You work for an agent maybe ?

As everything else with Thai Immigration you will get many different answers as they make up their small little rules as they see fit ...

Great stuff with these Agents now promoting them self ...

If you follow the rules you don't need an agent, never used an agent.in the 22 years I've been here and never had any real problems so don't understand why all the fuss.
Problem can be that IO don't follow the rules but acts like small kings in their tight uniforms

and if you look for low rentals check out the suburbs of Mazar-e-Sharif or Jalalabad, Afghanistan.
Spoken as a true thai apologist - have you ever been to Varna at Black Sea or you only travel to Swedenstan ?

To OP : Go to Bulgaria - way cheaper than Thailand and UK citizens get free health care (deal between UK and Bulgaria).

Yes you do. You left the country so your stay ended and you/someone needs to report your new arrival/stay even if it's the same address.
Having a lease doesn't make any difference.
We were told the opposite from Jomtien Immigration - not that I'm surprised they say something different from day to day

I changed from retirement extension to marriage extension in Jomtien 2 years ago, in theory no problems at all.
Just make sure to be aware of all the additional hassle - not only the need to have annually updated marriage papers from Banglamung Amphoe, but also the 30d wait period, the home visit during the first issue of the marriage extension and the need for a witness (living near your house and having their name registered in a local blue book), and the witness having to come with you to Jomtien for an interview every year when you file the paperwork
I have done it for ease of work permit application, but will definitely go back to retirement once not needing the WP anymore, additional hassle is just too big.
Sent from my SM-A730F using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app
Agree although some members don't like when you call Marriage extension a "hassle" - think they get offended some how

I'm also thinking of changing from a retirement to marriage extension at Jomtien.
As I understand it, there's no actual 'hassle' but a marriage extension is more involved. Over and above the retirement requirements basically you will need to provide various photographs of you and your wife at home, proof of your marriage and be prepared for a home visit from immigration. Your application is then put 'under consideration for about thirty days while your application is processed.
Not more hassle.......exactly the same process every year
Don't forget you need to provide witness, hand drawn map to/from Immigration to your home, multiple docs from your landlord (if renting) etc. etc. so yes definitely way more hassle

Like JackThompson say : if you rent your condo - like we do - the IO will keep on coming with new demands for your Marriage extension eg. personal docs from your landlord, witness, pics not good enough etc. etc. etc.
We got enough of this circus and decided to go for the Retirement extension as many expats advice this as its much easier nad since we will take all our money out of Thailand anyway when we leave Thailand in april 2019 I don't care about 800k for Retirement extension.
I can hear from many other expats that we are certainly not the only ones that have had enough of being treated like a criminal cause you are married to a thai

This is what is called information overload. TM.86 and TM.6 were superfluous.
Good of you to have had your wife call immigration. Was it their hotline 1178 she called?
How did it go in the afternoon when you went back and followed the advice given by immigration?
Gonna pick up my Retirement extension today from counter 8 - no problems, no bribes and very friendly staff at counter 8, not like 6 and 7.
Disappointing to see how many expats actually supports corruption (shills or Tourist Police staff maybe ?) at Immigration and some people - that should be experts in this area - actually think that a Marriage extension is done same same in every Immigration office … unbelievable naive
